  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So quick notes.

ProRes happens two ways.

1. ProRes Only Recording mode. This occurs when you choose ProRes as the main code. Like Komodo it requires a reboot.

2. REDCODE RAW + ProRes Proxy Record. This occurs when you choose ProRes Proxy. This apparently has the data rates to push out a 2K proxy dual record scenario at maximum resolution in HQ. Still tinkering with it.

As per DSMC2 and Komodo ProRes RAW is scaled from the higher resolution source to 4K or 2K. No upscaling.

Also, though a specialty format, 4K 8:1's maximum framerate is...... drum roll please...... 1000 FPS.

Really happy about frame limit and timelapse, diving into that tomorrow. Also happy about Static IP fix there.

Additional note. 120 fps ProRes 4444 at 4K from 8K 17:9 is possible in ProRes only mode.

Dual RAW/Proxy Record max FPS at 8K tops out at 60fps if you have ProRes 422 HQ selected. i.e. worse case data rate scenario.

Interesting stuff.

Trying to find the full specs and capabilities. What are the frame rates and resolutions for ProRes in both 2k and 4k? Anything higher than 4k? Possible to use different sensor modes (full-frame, Super35 crop, etc)? And do we know if the 4k ProRes is downsampled from the 8k sensor? Thanks anyone who can try this out!

Supported ProRes Only Mode Codecs are:

ProRes 4444 XQ
ProRes 4444
ProRes 422 HQ
ProRes 422
ProRes 422 LT

Supported Dual RAW/Proxy or REDCODE RAW/ProRes Codecs are:
ProRes 422 HQ
ProRes 422
ProRes 422 LT

Still digging into it, but seems like 120fps might be the max the encoder can do or just where we are in the beta. No higher than 4K resolutions. 4K or 2K is scaled or at whatever resolution/format you have. So 8K 17:9 is scaled down to 4K, i.e. downsampled.

Pretty rad to have the heavier ProRes codecs in there. Especially the concept of 8K to 4K downsampled 4444. Ironically I'm likely the last person on earth to use this stuff as I'm a RAW sort of fellow in camera, but very handy.

That's all great news. Glad it can do 120fps in 4k. I wonder if there are some widescreen formats that can do higher in 4k (but a little less than 8:1 - haha). ProRes 422 is excellent for those jobs that need longer takes or documentary shooting since we've lost Redcode's compression ratios.

Full-frame 4k up to 120fps in ProRes 422 or 4444 is pretty excellent if you don't want to or are unable to to shoot 8k.

Is this a joke or what.... Really 4K 8:1 1000 FPS. and this is REDCODE R3D file...?? If this is true I think this will sell a butt load of cameras to science project type of folks. But thats about it. I wish it were at least 8:4 then you could have some sort of cinema framing but 8:1 is kind of hard to sell to a client.
Wow not to look a gifted horse in the mouth but just throwing this out there and seeing if anyone at RED bites... Would this even remotely mean that there might be a 2K at higher than 1000fps possibilities??? No disrespect just wondering as logic seems that that might be possible... Given it being at 2K that might give the frame rate but also allow for a larger then 8:1 ratio..

THANK YOU RED YOU AMAZING CAMERA COMPANY:dog:

It's great to see it implemented already.

I do hope that they unlock a lower bitrate 1080p ProRes Proxy that will allow us to shoot the 8K 120fps R3D w/ ProRes Proxy 1080p. Right now you're limited at 60ps when shooting Dual mode in 8K. I know people like to try and edit 8K and 4K footage in R3D without proxy, but Proxy workflow is so helpful on the post creative edit side.

That said, I did transcodes of 8K 120fps for a recent shoot and it was 5X faster in Resolve than RedCine-X.

A 4K 8:1 aspect frame would be 4096x512, no? What exactly would you do with that? Probably get away with using it in some broadcast productions that are finishing in 720..? Or am I missing something here?

There's a great deal of industry that utilizes HFR for motion analysis. Even on the dedicated high speed cameras extreme wide ratios like that are used to get a boost in frame rate.

Some places I've personally seen or shot work like this in the past:

- NASA
- Military
- Sports (training gate, swing, and motion analysis)
- Automotive
- Fisheries
- Fabrication/Factories

Just to name a few.

Fun thing is my first 12-ish years in the industry I started crossing into those realms lightly, likely due to the newness of anything like this, then in the past decade the party has been on fire for work like this. Very much outside of the typical scripted, doc, and commercial world; but a world that does exist.

4K 4:1 might be a useful thing as well IMO, but it's lower on my priority list. DSMC2 does btw have some of these ratios and they are obviously uncommon for a lot of people. I do meet people who only shoot one specific ratio constantly. Pretty interesting.

My professional needs and pretty much the majority of the industry are:
- 17:9
- 16:9
- 2.39:1-ish
- Anamorphic support from there.

Lots of great discussion about sensor aspect ratios, but generally the primary focus needs to exist in what professionals need the most and frame extraction is ideal from there. The hard trick there is there are some people who only shoot say 16:9 or anamorphic or whatever. But the more you do or see, it's pretty clear what is ideal.

Probably not. Data rate limited. For example, you can shoot 8k 17:9 HQ + PR 422HQ 2k proxy at 59.99fps, but if you change to 60fps you are limited to MQ.

Some nice UI fixes in this update:
-Added shutter up/down assignable buttons

can be added to the side buttons now

-Added preset 'All Image/LUT and Project Settings'

can create a presets say for 8k 17:9 HQ 24, 8k 17:9 120 LQ, etc and assign them to one of the user page side buttons, so you can quickly switch between formats.

I feel ya on it being a supper thin frame but a lot of science applications will eat this up. If your doing research or just need the frame rates and a medium quality image this is a great tool. For cinema use....mmmmm not so much.

Is it possible to burn in a 3d LUT while recording solo 4k Prores?

thnx!

So, can the proxy write with a LUT—I can't seem to change/add a LUT to the proxy file from just RWG/Log3G10. Would be nice on smaller shoots to have the camera making rec709 ProRes dailies.

Also, found that if you have the ProRes Proxy enabled, you cannot access 120fps in 8K. But the camera doesn't tell you that is the issue and just maxes out at 60fps. Good to know if you are on a shoot and decide to shoot 120fps but have been at 24fps all day and can't figure out why you can't shoot 120fps.

Are you on beta 1.2.2? You can select LOG or LUT for the ProRes, I think it was put in on 1.2.1 but was not in there on 1.2.0.

Yup. That fixed it. Thought I double checked yesterday that I was on the latest but I must have misread my 1.2.0 as being 1.2.2. Thanks for that. All good now.
