RACK FOCUS

Are you guys working on RED electronic zooms or do they take a backseat to the RPAs?

Everything is taking a backseat to getting our parts issue resolved to get EPIC-X out.

Music to my ears!

Man, I'm loving this new feature. What aren't these cameras going to be able to do? Camera levitation would be pretty cool. Think you guys can add that feature? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

closest thing is that wicked helicopter they had over at red studios...who knows, they might build it into the next epic? haha

EDIT:

+1 on the backseat but hopefully not too far back, I would really love a RED Electronic Zoom (REZ?) with my X, mainly a 17-50 version

Just cause this would never work with my manual lenses (be awesome if RED found a way of managing that! no need to buy electronic lenses, anything goes!)

and this is too awesome a feature to let go to waste, probably not an every moment feature but still! useable and welcome!

Indeed! They seem to be the only company out there that would be willing to implement E.T. technological features into their cinema cameras.

I had to watch it twice because the first time I was just staring at that white beauty...

Yes. And btw this video was shot with Scarlet :)

There will be 3 ways to control speed... 1st is either a settable duration in the menus. 2nd via the pressure sensitive rocker button on the side handle. And last but definitely not least, via swipe speed on the touchscreen.

Just COOOOL. Isn't it like it should have always been?
Once forever done right.

Thank you guys so much. Can't wait to tackle it my own.

So simple, and probably nearly an AC killer in many cases...

Cheers,
Axel

Comparing a technology that controls the lens motors via USB using Canon SDK with the Red solution is not a good idea IMHO:)
Your USB controller - just as Canon EOS utility - sends commands, and there is a limit of these commands per second.

I don't think that Epic has the same limitation.

Indeed, I have tried another (no longer available) Canon mount and it swung the lens focus around at any speed, following the wheel. Sometimes if you do too fast a move on some lenses it lags minimally, but it's rarely a problem.

An AC doesn't just pull focus - they make judgement calls. An AC, if skilled, is much more than just a focus robot. There is really no such thing as an "AC killer".

I agree that RED is not responsible for anyone's comments on this forum. We are all adults here. But I do know that these sorts of comments didn't pop up when the test subjects were tigers and lizards.

I guess we can all be a little relieved about that!! :001_smile:

Aren't we starting to mix a few unrelated things together here and blame "the brand" for something for which it has nothing to do? First a mannequin is used to illustrate a simple rack focus capability. To be honest, if it was half naked, I didn't notice. Then someone makes a snide comment - perhaps tasteless, I am not trying to judge it here. Then someone else calls that person out on the comment - again, whatever sensibilities one has, one is of course entitled to. But now we are suggesting RED has responsibility for a third party comment that others believe to be in bad taste? Personally, I don't really love RED's choices for their visual presentation of their brand, but I don't believe they are inherently disrespectful to women nor should they be responsible for others' comments that could be interpreted as such. I am not denying that gatherings of (primarily) men, such as this, can sometimes wander off to a place of questionable taste, but I really don't think RED, as a company (with very a great deal of individual visibility her on the forum) does anything to promote or support such an attitude.

Just my opinion.

The nude female form can be beautiful to behold, and there is nothing wrong with filming women over 21 in whatever state of undress, whether they be plastic or real humans. So my comment was not at all directed at Jarred or Red. My problem was only toward immature misogynist remarks, the kind that turn off women from Red, and turn me, as a man who loves women (and I'm sure there are many other men who share my sentiment here), off this forum. I get the sense that if some guys here met me in person they would call me a "faggot" and beat me up.

I don't really like the Alexa, but I never get that sense on the Arri forum.

While we're at it, I loved meeting the great minds at Red at their booth, but the booth itself with lots of bouncer-looking guys and the tattoo parlor was obviously aimed at a socio-economic group other than my own, and I wonder if the group who would find that appealing actually works in cinematography all that often or would have the funds to buy a Red. The Arri booth was sophisticated, soft-spoken, almost soothing, and I found it enjoyable to visit, (even though I like their lights, but again not much their cameras.) Macho jocks and skater punks, by my observation, shoot mostly with 7Ds or whatever is cheapest, if they're interested in the arts at all. Those who don't are a tiny group not numerous enough to support a high-end camera brand.

But... Let's not derail this thread, which shows some amazing technology. I still maintain a proper Preston-like focus wheel would be an important additional element to this system (used at other times for other reasons) for the way our and many high-end shoots with skilled ass. cams operate.

o boy. So gotta cross of using mannequins off our list. Add that right under smoking cigars. Someone is gonna hafta start making the list of all the things we are not supposed to do because i keep forgetting.

BTW.. she is wearing clothes... a front halter thing with a scarf and her bottom bits would be covered if she actually had any...

you guys are way too funny.....

Rob you almost redeemed yourself but throwing down the comment above just made everything else you said completely irrelevant. What a dickwad thing to say about a group of people that not only helped build Oakley, but in turn, directly and indirectly built RED.

I can't believe some of the posts I just read... Really.

Anyway, can you guys please hurry up and ship my EPIC-M? I've got a mannequin porno flick to shoot later next week. ;)
