  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RACK FOCUS

I think there is a lot of anticipation for the canon mount. While this rack focus is awesome I think many of us would love to see a similar short shot of the redmotepro in action doing the same shot with an operator.

We are all being quite quiet about the redmote pro but I think many of us harbor a belief that it could lead to a serious shift in many areas of production.

Looking forward to what comes in the next year.

amen, bro, amen!

at the end of the day, one may choose to rack manually, if the shot requires a human's touch, but this is a rad tool that could work in a number of situations.

Once more, amazing work guys!

Get those EPIC-S cameras out there because I need one!

A couple of limitations are: 1. Once you change the focal length your points no longer focus. 2. There are only three speeds at which the canon lens will focus - fast, medim and slow. Depending on the focal length of the lens, the slow setting takes too long to be useable. I find the medium setting to be best. The fast one tends to jump in steps and is not very usable either. Now I could be wrong, but this is how my usb controller is with my 7d. This could also be the limitation of the 7d and not with the lens itself which would make my post here null and void. Haha.

Jarred, I know I'm a bit off the topic here and I'll be hated for this, but here it goes. Is it me or is Scarlet fixed really noisy? I've seen 3 samples from Scarlet (focus speed, rack focus and lion) and they all seem quite a bit noisy. I remember Jim saying he doesn't like posting footage of the cameras which are still in development, because they don't show the full potential of the sensor and so on. So is the scarlet still being tweaked, or is it the high ASA or is it the actual picture that will be taken by a production scarlet. I love the image and the way it can be manipulated in post, but what about noise?

The rack focus is awesome by the way. And I, as well as a few people have posted before me, would really love the redmotePRO demo soon.

I'm wondering if theRack output from the Epic could be used, via some sort of controller if necessary, to drive a regular focus motor for bigger lenses.

Oh là là... Sending this to a friends with that lens right now. That should spike their interest in the camera just a little. :) Thanks for sharing the video Jared.

Nice! Several months ago, prior to NAB, I asked on the forum if this will be supported on the Scarlet. More or less this answers the question.

Comparing a technology that controls the lens motors via USB using Canon SDK with the Red solution is not a good idea IMHO:)
Your USB controller - just as Canon EOS utility - sends commands, and there is a limit of these commands per second.

I don't think that Epic has the same limitation.

Great feature and the footage look really neat too. So please Jarred.. When and how i could take an order on a Scarlet or Epic S?

We have a need and budget for it here now, Please, let's us before we have to go for a F3 with Slog!

Given that the sample photo you're giving us is of a half-dressed girl in a prison cell...

Am I the only one who wants a better look at this "rack"...?

Just saying!

This kind of comment makes us all look like a bunch of immature macho idiots with no class or respect for our many valued female colleagues and female Red shooters. I'm sorry, but I find your attitude extremely offensive.

Would be fun to throw up an [A] & point on the touchscreen and then be able to slide your finger between the two and rack back and forth based on where your finger was between the two.

Not where the A/B points were in frame. Just as a big slider.

White EPIC - M ...??? remind me of the white IPHONE 4... does the scarlet have the same rack focus?

This is great. For me one of the big reasons to upgrade to Epic. For a single operator this is such a good feature.

Yep, this is huge for people that like to operate with a minimum number of crew. Life is often so much simper when there are less people are involved.

There will be 3 ways to control speed... 1st is either a settable duration in the menus. 2nd via the pressure sensitive rocker button on the side handle. And last but definitely not least, via swipe speed on the touchscreen.

AWESOME!

Yes, this is exciting, and will have many, many, many applications. However, I do hope that the fine minds at Red also come out with a remote follow-focus. A skilled focus puller with a wheel can do wonderful things in situations like Steadicam that this app doesn't really replace.

It is really neat though, I am drooling full-on.

Hooray. This tiny detail is something I was hoping for since day one. Makes life so much easier on those light setup, single shooter jobs. And probably on other shoots as well :) thanks guys, and keep these firmware updates coming.

+1 on the ease in/out curve
