Hello all, how are you? I wanted to know, according to you, what is the best workflow process for someone who uses "Rcx, final cut pro x and after effect cc"?

My precise question is: is there a way to export an .r3d file from final cut (maybe with compressor?) to be able to perfectly grade in after effect?

Here is my workflow:

-A little grade in Rcx

-import .R3d footages in Final cut pro x and edit

-make some grade tests in after effect by importing originals .R3d

what i would like, again, is to be able to export an uncompressed file from final cut, and when grading in after effect, obtain the exact same result i get when grading my original .R3d..

Is there a way to make "After effect and final cut" communicate between them? By an Xml link? (I've never used the Xml fonction), sorry if my questions seem "nooby"..

What you are more or less describing is the way Adobe Dynamic Link works between Premiere Pro CC and After Effects. This is an exclusive Adobe feature that allows for linking straight into AE and have it show up on your Premiere Pro timeline.

This is something Final Cut can't do.

Thanks for your reply Phil, i've found a way to make it by using this little app:

http://foolcolor.net/foolcut

but only the half of my timeline is imported, i think that it doesn't work perfectly well right now.. So, can i export a .r3d file from final cut (by using compressor maybe, but i haven't this program yet)?

You could try AutomaticDuck. Working with the developer right now on another project. Nice guy.

Or you could use the native XML features in Premiere and then do a Dynamic Link between Premiere and AE to manage your FCP importing. Or you could just use Premiere. ;)

This app was an early solution to go into AE from FCP X but it is no longer working with newer FCP X build. You may have tried the demo that would only export a few clips or something I guess.

One easy way to do this is :

- export FCP X xml from your edit
- use Xto7 to convert to an FCP 7 XML (or this can also be done by importing FCPX xml and re-exporting an FCP 7 XML in RESOLVE)
- use free autoDuck PRO-IMPORT (it is now included in CC) to re-import FCP 7 xml into AE

It may not have all the cool features / reimport everything my app was able to convert but should be a good starting point for getting basic edits in AE from FCP X

A huge Thanks Mikael, the xml import in after effect is pretty strange, i have a 1080p resolution instead of 4,5k, but i guess it is due to the "lite" version of Davinci resolve i have.. I will make it like i was about to make it, export an uncompressed file from Final cut x and make the grade in after effect, i will have to recut the movie in after effect but one question,

does someone know how to export a .r3d file from final cut x? I will grade my film in after effect, but if i export a prores 4444 from final cut, i will have less flexibility in the garden am i wrong? Or maybe the new prores 444 xq makes it as flexible as a r3d file?

New Prores 4444 XQ or .R3d

New Prores 4444 XQ or .R3d

Hello all, i'm about to achieve the editing of my short film, and i will use after effect CC to grade it, but i have a little question..

How can i export a .R3d file from final cut pro x? I don't want to lose flexibility by exporting in prores 4444, according to your experiences, can we push a prores 4444 file as far as a .R3d file in grade? My guess is that "no", we lose a little bit of flexibility..

But what about this new Prores 4444 Xq codec?

The best solution would be to export a .r3d file directly from final cut, but i'm not sure it is possible... Thanks for your answer all!

Hi,

Your best solution is to edit in FCP X and to export an XML when you're ready to head into grading.
I would work with the original R3D files if possible.

Thanks Deo, but i have a lot of troubles reading my Final cut pro x XML into After effect, i should probably try the xto7 application, but i'm afraid to spend 50$ for something that doesn't work well, as i've already tried a lot of apps...

My policy is to use originals when grading.

4k Prores 4444xq and DCP for mastering.

Compare data rates and flexibility of original r3d over prores and you will understand r3d is the clear winner. Not to mention the time saving in transcoding all the material.

my app was able to reconnect R3D and rescale the project (if you edited 720p and needed to finish in 4K) but I am not sure this can be achieved by using X27 or Resolve...

but unless you did heavy reframing and compositing in FCPX it should not be too hard to resize everything to 4.5K in AE manually...

Staying with R3D as much as you can will always be better both for preserving image quality and file size...

Now guys like Marc Toia edit and deliver crazy good looking stuff from 2K FCPX project exported as PRORES without ever going back to R3D after an initial quick grade and convert in RCX before editing...

You cannot export an R3d cut of your show...you can only export an XML in the case you are referring to. If you are editing in FCP, why switch over to Premier? But regardless...if your original data is on a connected hard drive, i see no issue with exporting your XML from FCP and importing it to Premeir and it will then pick up the same data being referred to...which is your original R3d files unless i have understood something differently....that is how i would do this. Although i must admit i have never gone from fcp to premier, but seems simple enough.

Hello Johnny, i don't want to go from final cut to premiere, but from final cut pro x to after effect (for the grading), the problem is that after effect doesn't support final cut pro x Xml, there are some alternatives, but they doesn't work really well... But thanks for your reply!

After Effects does not seem to come to mind for grading when you have speed grade or even better from FCP to go to Resolve. Unless you have a certain sequence you need to use after effects for. Personally i'd go to Resolve before after effects and in fact would not consider grading at all in after effects.

Hi,

you ou need a program called X27 by assisted editing available on the App Store. This will allow you to convert fcpx.xml into regular xml that can be read by premiere or after effects or fcp7.

Worth thy the investment, updated all the time. Producers best friend is another very valuable app by them.

Hello David, i've just bought this little application, i have a strange issue to be honest, it crops my 4,5k footage on each side, and i have to "resize the image" to 5021x2152 to get it back.. Pretty strange, do you have this issue too?

@Johnny, After effect is the only color grade software i know so...

Which player do you personally use for your films

Which player do you personally use for your films

Hello all, after a final export, which player do you use to watch or show your films?

I have a strange problem, Quicktime 7 seems to apply a lut on my final export, the image is less contrasty and much less rich in term of color.. The only player that shows the real color is Vlc, but the big issue about Vlc is that every 3 first seconds of a big file (Prores 4444, 422 or Tiff), the video doesn't read correctly..

The solution would be to put a 3 seconds black screen before the film in my timeline, so Vlc will "bug" on the black screen only, but is that only me? Which player do you have for "the best image quality"?

I have a 2014 Macbook pro retina 15", share your thoughts fellas ;)
