  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick Look - LG 31" DCI 4K Monitor

Amazon has them with Prime as well. Same price. Also, couldn't a GTX980 work in an old MP tower to drive this?

I was looking into this monitor recently. I use a single GTX 770 4GB (GV-N770OC-4GD), which according to the specs, outputs DCI 4K via HDMI.
Just looking to get DCI 4K at 10-bit color @24Hz.

The LG page's GPU chart says GTX 780 or higher.

Anybody try this on a GTX 770 or know the limitations?

FWIW, lots of people are getting crappy DP cables included with this display and are having to buy better ones. That seems to be fixing quite a few issues. So plan on another $20 or so. I recommend the mini-DP to DP 20Gbps rated DisplayPort 1.2 w/ audio cables from Accel. Amazon has them for $17, I think for a 2m cable.

Played with the one my friend bought and it's working well. Color out of the box wasn't great, but it calibrated fine. He mostly does print and photo work and he's loving the display. He uses it on both a PC with Titan GPU and a Mac Pro cylinder with D700's. I played with it on the PC, and 4K native res is workable. Unlike on the Dell 24" 3840x2160 IPS I have where running native resolution requires a magnifying glass at times. ;)

Frank, that cable is the one I was talking about. They also make it in mini-DP or mini-DP+DP. I do not recommend the 3m length -- most 3m + DP cables I've ever tried to get working have issues. The signaling of the DP connection just doesn't carry that far reliably. :(

Which GPUs, if any, will give us 4k on older Mac Pros?

Maybe the K5000?
K6000?

Hi Jeff. What if we use it a second monitor? With icons all on the first monitor? Is it workable that way or will it be too much for the video card to handle?

And did your friend calibrate it with the normal xrite or something more professional?
Thanks

Will, I answered your GPU + older Mac Pro question in one of the other threads around here, just noticed that you have posted in a couple places. In short, your best option is a GeForce card. The GTX680 should output 4K, but I think it's limited to 30Hz maximum. We also have to pay attention to what the OSX drivers support. So I'm thinking GTX770 or newer/ better and OSX 10.9.5 or newer should do it.

Kirk, using one of these as a second monitor is fine and. You can run it at 4096x2160 @ 24/25 fps via HDMI no problem and use it as a preview/ playback monitor if that's what you're thinking. And even to use it as desktop workspace, that's not really a problem. Driving one of these, or any of the 4K / UHD monitors is the same as running 4 x 1080p monitors or 3 x 27/30" 2.5K monitors. The systems can drive it for general application use without a problem. The newest GPUs can handle it fine. Don't expect to play the latest games at full resolution, especially on the older Mac hardware though. Just keep expectations in check and you'll be alright. :)

My friend's LG was calibrated with a Spyder4 color kit from DataColor. I don't know specifically which software was used or if it was the included DataColor tools. It was set up great for his print and photo work. Not quite to my liking for video color correction or grading, but I didn't spend much time on it or investigate further.

Spyder colorimeters are terrible. I have three different models, and they are all pretty much garbage.

Heh. The only Spyder I have direct experience with was a Spyder 3 Elite I bought like 6 years ago. It was indeed garbage. These days I use an I1 Pro and a Klein K10.

Are you saying the Spyder colorimeters are terrible, or that the software is not handy? I've found that have to set almost all parameters manually to get proper results. If I just run the software with the recommend settings the outcome is not satisfying.

Thank you Jeff.

What is the response time of this monitor? Latency in ms?

Have you tried any games Phil? :)

Thanks Jeff - Answered me just fine.

I think i'm getting one for christams then ;)
Will use it 8 bit for now. I have a pretty new 6core system with the titan card so I hope to be fine. I just wish to view my 4k footage in 4k, thats all really - Good calibration is desirable too. When a good solution for proper 10bit is available I'll go for that. Thanks for the feedback. Makes life easier without wating money.

Here's a fairly basic question from a fairly basic brain . Im toying with buying a 4k monitor as my work station gradually increases to handle my Dragon workflow. However as Iv'e mentioned before I don't hide from the fact that I am no expert in the post tech world and I have a fairly simple question. Does my work station have to excel in any particular area to benefit from a 4 K monitor. I'm in the process up upgrading my tower to faster processors and more powerful graphics card and SSD memory but at present I am trying to avoid the extra expense of a Rocket X just now. Will a 4k monitor be wasted on me without a rocket ?

A question to all who have this monitor and are running Nvidia GPUs: does your refresh rate in 4096x2160 mode max out at 50Hz?

I've got two GTX760 GPUs in SLI, connected to display via DisplayPort, and Nvidia Control Panel lists only 50Hz as refresh rate when resolution is set to 4096x2160.

edit: I see LG's GPU compatibility charts says I need GTX780 or higher for 4096/60Hz. Nice.

I've received this monitor from amazon last week, and playing with it and it seems great!
I've connected it to a nMP (2013), I was able to run it at 4096x2160 @ 50Hz, not 60Hz, it seems a OS issue...

I would like to know if there's a way to edit in premiere and use it as a reference monitor, without the premiere interface... or even in DaVinci Resolve. Do I need a black magic Ultrastudio 4K?
What if I would like to use it like a field monitor?

Best,
Filippo
