  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question to you SIDE HANDLE owners...

just got our second side handle a week ago, and connected it today, and the battery pops out, brand new out of the box.... ugh...
I really hope not. Our second handle was scheduled to arrive last week. It is coming in next week. I have copied this yo our Bomb Squad guy Dan Baum so he can test.

That sounds like an overly aggressive energy management feature.

I just sent a question to my RED rep as I'm curious as to RED's testing procedures for the accessories.

Here's a customer with 2 out of 4 REDmotes in a single shipment that had non-functioning Enter buttons:

These posts certainly make me wonder if the units are tested before being shipped?

What's RED's policy on paying for the shipping both ways for DOA units?

My batteries won't lock into place inside the side handle half the time. Was a little embarrassing in front of a client the other day :/

Submitted a ticket on the issue. We'll see what the solution is.

the revolt does go in enough, the problem is with my red tab does not hold the revolt, it is slightly bent. but when i bend it back into place it holds the revolt down.

Here is a photo of mine, and as you can see the red tab has a small white line that is where it is bending out of place

I think it's a no worry thing if it breaks you order a red plastic or get it on the warranty. it's no big costs involved.

Bought a second side handle. Struggled through back order. Arrived last week. Same problems. That said. I still wouldn't trade the Epic for anything out there. But hands up for a super sexy side handle? Me.
So the part in question hadn't changed in the new unit?

What's the 'official' policy on this? If you bend it and break it, does that void your warranty? How much does this small part cost?

With the # of reported problems, maybe RED should just supply a few spare red plastic parts, probably cheaper than the back and forth shipping costs - and far less downtime - until they can engineer a better replacement part without the issues?

Hey Guys,

I have noticed this problem with a side handle too. However I managed to fix one completely, and this issue has not reappeared at all in follow up usage.

The issue is that the piece of metal behind the red plastic bit easily loses its memory and cannot supply enough downward force to keep the battery in place.

On examining the red plastic bit, i noticed that it was the little piece of metal inserted in there whose memory was not strong enough. IT had lost its bend, not the plastic. Since this piece of metal is rather difficult (nearly impossible) to remove from the plastic itself, my solution was to gently separate the plastic from the metal by a few mm's squeeze a very fine pair of pliers and gently bend the metal inwards more (downwards in the logical way, to give it more curve) thereby essentially increasing the amount of downward force supplied by the red plastic component to the battery when snapped back into the unit.

I am assuming that red will be doing much the same if you send the component back to them, however it is clearly very very easy to break this plastic bit so they probably don't want us all poking and bending things and potentially breaking them :)

I dont at all suggest doing this if you are not confident around do it yourself fixes, but it certainly does work. Another temporary solution that worked great was to rip a piece of that hard foam that red products like the redmote come in, then cut it to size and gently wedge it behind the red plastic bit, thereby also supplying more downwards force...

All the best

Ivan

I sent mine in for repair and it works again.

Also would not auto transition to the side handle when DC was pulled. That is fixed now as well.

Quick turnaround as well. Good on RED!

I've not had a problem with the side handle. I believe Red will pay for shipping if you have a problem and are under warranty.

Talking on here is fine, but submit a ticket with Red- they will take care of you.
