  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Qnap raid system

Our post facility runs off the largest NAS QNAP offer. We have it configured for 10GBE and we have around 30 machines connected to it. At any one time around 6 machines can edit at high speed from it utilising R3Ds.

I really recommend them.
 
Bob what would you recomend if I wanted something like 100TB fast storage for 6 machines. 2 macs (which will be updated as soon as apple gets thier stationsry pro boxes out. The rest will be pc or linux machines.

As of now we run a tigersan server over fiber with mixed results. Want fast read write access for 2 flames and 4 nuke/3d boxes.

Currently none has tb3 but Will try to replace pc with tb3 and new macs I guess will have that aswell.

QNAP has nas devices that support both 10G ethernet and TB3, when 10 Gbit/s~1,25 GByte/sec is fast enough for your needs I think that would be the better option.
You can always buy a TB3 to 10 Gbit/s ethernet adapter.

You can run it in raid60(secure and fast) with 14TB drives and still have more than 100 TB effective drivespace and use the 4 SSD's as cache or hot data.

It has 2 10 Gbit/s ports so you can link aggregate them to get 20 Gbit/s

QNAP TS-1685 with 12 10TB 7200 RPM SATA drives. This will give you 120 TB storage, and 100 TB after your RAID 6 group. You connect the dual 10G ports of the TS-1685 to a managed 10G switch like a Netgear XS716T, that you can link aggregate. This will leave you with 14 ports for client computers - all full 10G speed. You now plug in your 10G ports from your Macs, PC's and Linux computers to your Netgear XS716T switch, and you are done. For Thunderbolt 3 computers, get the Sonnet Solo 10G thunderbolt to 10G adaptor. For Thunderbolt 2 computers, get the Sonnet Twin 10G or Promise SanLink2. For Win 10 PC's, get the ASUS 10G NIC, or Sonnet Presto 10G or the QNAP QSG-10T1T. All will work well. I have no idea of what will work with your linux machine, but I am sure a generic Intel X550-T2 has linux drivers that will work. In London, Span is a good dealer for this equipment.

anyone using the QNAP TVS 882BR for videoediting?

I just installed my first TVS-882BR for Rockhouse Motion Picture Company in Little River, Kansas. I did not advise them to purchase this unit, but it works fine. For almost the same money you can get a TS-1685, a TS-1677x,
or a TVS-1282T, and get superior performance. but yes, the TVS-882BR works just fine. If you are looking to save money, get the TVS-873e with the option QNAP QXG-10G1T 10G card.

I must say that im impressed by the low noise of the TS-1685 compared to a caldigit 6 disk raid I had 9 years ago. I was afraid that TS-1685 would be louder since it has more discs. But its not! I would not have it directly at the desk im working at thoe. But I have it and a workstation just 2 meters from me in the room next to me and its pretty quite.
 
We have four editors in our office, two on mac and two on windows. The macs are connected via Thunderbolt 3 and the windows machines are connected via 10GBe. All four of us can work on RED footage projects no problem.

We have the TVS-1282T3, set up in a RAID 10 with 6 SSD for accelerated caching.
 
Crap, I messed up my QNAP TS-1685 with yesterdays update. I dont run premiere against the QNAP TS-1685 as an "ordinary" network disc. Instead I mapped it so it shows up in windows explorer as an regular hardrive. After the update I could not login in to the drive. But I then discovered that the network drive did work so I mapped a new drive and over wrote the one that did not work. But I cant get premiere to find the source files automatically? I tried to rename it to what premiere was asking for.

Also its dead slow now. Seam like it lost my dear optimized setup. Next time its optimized I leave the internet connection unplugged!! But I cant understand when the optimized settings were erased? Was it from just updating the software (did it many times before), or erasing the mapped network disk. But that should not be any problems since its just a mapped drive. Aslo I did not delete it but disconnected it.

Premiere is asking for //169.xxx.xxx.xxx/home/the current project im working on.
Wich is the best practice to map a network disk so premiere could find the files with no need to relink files?

I connect it to a windows 10 professional workstation using a 10b nic card. Yesterday I had my usal 900 MB/SEC read/write speeds. Then I did an update to 4.3.5.0760 version and all the sudden I could not connect to my server. Atleast not from my "mapped network disc" wich is the one i use (i prefer have it mapped to an volume letter rather than an ip adress).
I wanted to have the same volume letter as before so i mapped a new one and replaced the old. But Adobe premiere (editing program) would not fetch my source footage automaticly. So I tried to rename the mapped volume with the same name as the old previos wich was //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ (not sure its an good idea to post the adress online so imagen letters instead of x.) But that did not work. I still hade to manually relink the sourcefiles.

But everyting had become really sluggish so I ran aja disc test and got speeds around 100MB/SEC. I wonder what could have happened? I have not changed any settings at all. Atleast not more than that i replaced the old mapped server with a new one. All setting should be in the qnap itself. Right?

That said this last qnap update was much more massive than the one i previolsly have runned. So i think it messed up my server!!!

Im usally very slow upgrades when something is working proper...

Edit: If i look at the NAS 1685 configuration I se that ethernet 5 wich is the 10g port im using is set to obtain ip address settings automatically via DHCP. I wonder if that is correct. I have understod that you must use static ip adresses.
But i have not changed this...Can the update done this?

What’s the cheapest of the 10gbe QNAPs could I get for editing at home? I have my office with Cat 6A cables and a broom cupboard with my networking gear inside (10gbe switch inside). Would the cheaper 4 disc units suffice or do you need a larger drive count / SSD caching?

What is your source material and what is the output material and how many TB do you want?
 
none of the models you mentioned.
Let's forget the QNAP. You need EIGHT drives. With EIGHT 7200 RPM drives and the correct QNAP and a 10G adaptor for your computer, you will get 900 - 1000 MB/sec READ speed.
The QNAP 4 bay TVS-453BT3, which QNAP touts for video, only gets 450 MB/sec over 10G. You need EIGHT drives. So EIGHT drives will cost as much or more than the QNAP.
Then you need a 10G adaptor for your computer. A Thunderbolt 2 to 10G adaptor is $500. A Thunderbolt 3 to 10G adaptor is $175. A PCIe card that is 10G for a Win 10 PC is $100.
For an old Mac Pro, a 10G card is about $270. So - if you expect to do 4K, 6K and 8K editing - even if the QNAP is free, you need the 10G adaptor, and you need EIGHT drives.
If you get a 4 bay model - even a "good one" - it will never be good enough for shared video storage for 2 editors doing 4K.

So, once you get past the fact that you need eight drives (and you should always keep a spare on hand - just in case of failure) - now you need the QNAP (or the Synology). The models you listed
are based on the Amazon Annapurna processor. They suck. When you look at the QNAP forums, and someone says "boy, I bought this QNAP, and it's a piece of garbage" - it's because they bought the
wrong QNAP. A QNAP that is "good enough" for accounting data, is NOT good enough for 4K video editing. QNAP is releasing many new models, but none are as cheap as the TVS-873e, which is about $1250 empty (and you
need to add a $89 10G card inside it). So eight drives will cost you more than $1250 - even if the QNAP was free.

And if you are unfamiliar with setting up a NAS - as I have said many times before - this is nothing like plugging in a G-Tech Studio XL or Promise Pegasus thunderbolt RAID. IT requires a setup, and unless you are willing to
sit there and suffer thru the setup, you will need to pay someone to help you do the setup. This is not plug and play - not the QNAP, not the Synology. Some people find it easy - many do not.

Thanks for the lengthy reply Bob and for the poster above, at the moment I’m happy to edit in 4K, I haven’t had any 8k material as of yet. For the 8 drive units and above do you have any preference on the AMD vs Intel processers? I have a PC sand will be getting a internal 10gbe card as well. I will check out the TVS-873e as my starting point.

How about using SSD drives can you break the 8 drive needed over 10gbe using that setup perhaps?

Anyone using some sort of cloud backup with your Q nap?

We are quite lousy att backing up our stuff and lot of work, like several guys for 6 months on end is only on our server and no place else...Need some better pillow to sleep on. So figure I look into some automatic way to backup certain folders from the q nap to some sort of cloud, if the shop burn down or such then I atleast got that. :)
 
You should be able to synch two qnaps. One at work and one offsite some where.
