The Foundry are thrilled to be able to announce that the STORM public beta has been released today. Thank you for your patience!

We’re taking the step of making the beta publicly available because we want to get feedback from as wide an audience as possible and we are keen for it to be tested in a wide a range of production environments, and to hear your views.

This is the first beta of a new product, so it's not perfect. There are some things that are not enabled in beta 1 (like the multi-track timeline) and we know that will be frustrating having shown those features in operation. We're sure you will find some bugs and areas needing improvement. So, try it, break it, tell us what's missing and help us release a ground breaking product for RED workflows next year. As usual, for a beta release we urge all our users to be cautious and not to rely upon it solely during production.

We have big plans for Storm and see it as an incredibly flexible platform that will continue to deliver innovative functionality, helping you in production, editorial, effects and finishing.

Information about STORM, access to the public beta and some new video tutorials are available on The Foundry website here:

http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/storm/

STORM requires a Mac Pro, MacBook pro or iMac with at least 2GB RAM running Snow Leopard. If a RED ROCKET card is fitted, STORM will use it to speed up processing of R3D material.

We look forward to continue to hear your feedback.

Richard

Storm GPU acceleraton? Network rendering?

Storm GPU acceleraton? Network rendering?

Will Storm use a GPU to accelerate performance?
Will it also support network rendering?
(Even if customers had to pay more for this feature)

Hmmm... It's just crashing on startup for me...

Code:
1/12/10 11:12:38 PM	Storm1.0v1b1[3279]	*** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x2138eb0 of class NSConcreteMapTable autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
1/12/10 11:12:48 PM	com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[302]	([0x0-0xdf0df].uk.co.thefoundry.Storm[3279]) Exited with exit code: 1

Great news, going to download now

Thanks look great. Nice tutorials, that helps a lot in seeing the possibilities and getting started quickly. I started testing straight away on a project that needs a grade and ran into some first things..

I just exported my first XML from final cut pro, and it gave a 1405 parse fault that was not enabled yet. I think that was from a few freeze frame shots, it doesn't seem to know what to do with that (yet?).

I removed those and moved everything back to one videolayer and exported an XML again. But now although it does import all the clips from the XML, all the clips are offline. The media is definitely here though, and still in the same place. What could have gone wrong? And is there a way to quickly make all media in the same path online if this happens? I now would have to do them one by one.

Hi

Could you run the following flags and post the output :

./Storm1.0v1b1 -debug="Default Video OpenGL"

Thanks

Jason

Hi Jim,
Storm effects use the GPU, which explains their speed.
No network rendering yet, but it is on the roadmap.
Enjoy!
