  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ProRes RAW?

Interesting. I thought resolve was sorting it's gpu stuff out?

It's gotten quite a bit better, but it's still not in the running with the rest (Baselight, Mistika, Scratch, Nucoda) as far ad efficiency.

That's the tradeoff... the rest cost more, Resolve needs more hardware.

A shame. Thanks.

Case in point... when I spun up Scratch on my ultrabook with its 2GB Pascal GPU and hit "play" I thought I'd goofed and imported proxies... but it was actually 8K Redcode. It wasn't playing full res de-Bayer, but so what? It still looked razor sharp in the preview. I ended up doing the entire grade while on a commuter train over a few days, including rendering.

Yes. If only most things important were well written.

That is interesting. Wonder if there is an SDI version. The thing I have always liked best about Atomos was the stability of their platform. Almost never have had errors. Also could this finally be Atomos meeting the need for a smaller recorder ? I certainly hope so. Love my PIX-E5, but don't find the media as stable.

Another big benefit will be the ability to render to another raw codec... E.g. for VFX, titles, stabilization, etc. It'll make rendering/pre-rendering way less destructive... Or is that even a possibility?

Do Atomos recorders still not do proper r3d filenaming though? Still 4k/60p is... reaaaal nice. And doesn't Prores RAW support indicate SDI (or can you get a raw tap off HDMI)?

An interesting development. DJI is offering a firmware update for their X7 aerial camera for the Inspire 2. This might mean there can be a chance for pro res raw on DSMC2 cameras. At least it proves that the technical needs for it doesn't require major redesigns from other players. I would assume the computing power of the X7/ Inspire 2 shouldn't excel the DSMC2's.

I think they do the naming right. However the output from camera is not really tc correct. its +/- like 3 frames.

I shot in Prores raw HQ on the Varicam/Atomos combo today. It’s insanely good. Fluid, fast, gorgeous in FCPX. I just unchecked the «raw to log» & «camera lut» auto options and worked directly with the original raw. Very impressive.

So I just updated my sumo with the latest firmware. i am testing it with my epic w via ski out in proves raw mode. The Sumo won't allow me to record to the ssd. Is red not allowing the sumo to record my ski signal from the camera to the sumo?

According to an article by Patrick Southern at FCP.co, recording ProRes Raw is “limited to cameras that can send a RAW sensor feed via 12G SDI.” - Maybe that has something to do with it?

Can’t with dsmc2. At least not through sdi or HDMI.

I'll say it right now, ProRes Raw will never be used in a red camera, not as long as R3D is around.

I believe RED said basically those exact words about regular Prores in general a few years back.

Prores RAW is a custom prores-raw API vs the R3D one that RED uses. Similarly Cdng that Blackmagic uses contains color science extras as well that aren't necessarily going to work with Prores RAW. So it's not quite so simple to enable it when you have something like R3D available.

On top of that, it's only 12-bit linearly encoded raw vs the 12-bit log that blackmagic/arri has, or the 16-bit linear that RED uses. It's generally a step backwards in color.
