  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just saw that Apple in set to intro an update to FCPX and it also debuting ProRes Raw with the promise of the ProRes versatility and the flexibility of Raw..

Thought on this?

How will this fall in line with R3D editing? Currently i love the speed/performance of R3D files in fcpx but love the idea of more speed (who doesn't)

And there is this from www.FCP.CO -

"You can play up to 8 streams of ProRes RAW or 7 streams of ProRes RAW HQ on an iMac Pro. When editing in Final Cut Pro, ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ render faster and export more quickly than comparable versions of REDCODE RAW and Canon Cinema RAW Light."

"Some other speed comparisons, ProRes RAW HQ will render nearly 6x faster than REDCODE RAW 3:1 and ProRes RAW HQ will encode to H.264 nearly 6x faster than REDCODE RAW 3:1. The bandwidth of the new codecs is between ProRes 4444 and 422."

Begs the question - will DSMC2 cameras support shooting ProRes RAW? Or, more broadly, how will RED play into this?

RED will have to license it to include it in future firmware or hardware updates. For the time being, it's only going to be available in external recorders with updated firmware, with implementations for on-board recording to follow later this year.

They already license ProRes. Any reason to think they wouldn't extend the license to the new flavors?

This is very cool. It will push everyone forward.

I'm wondering if it uses wavelets or overlapping blocks for compression?

I think ProRes is DCT, so this might be, too. Efficiency aside, that's probably the reason it's faster to render than RedCode.

When it's a closed codec I won't use it.
Let's hope all camera manufactures and NLE manufactures will implement AVID DNxHx and Cineform next to the RAW they already have.

Make every closed source intermediate codec a defacto NON-standard and frustrate it as much as possible.

Personally, I hope this is the missing link for the C200.
Something between their CRL and MP4, either externally or even internally.
Would finally make sense.

I thought that might be the case. The latter firms if this compression matches wavelet years ago. But wavelet us more versatile, and maybe it just needs hardware support, like dct gets for its type of compression.

Sounds intriguing. Certainly another option for ProRes in and outside of cameras perhaps. Makes one wonder where Apple will integrate this into their own hardware products.

"ProRes Raw and more coming this Monday in a free update for existing FCPX users."

Seriously, how great is that?!

Nowadays, with all these awesome FCPX updates, I'm so glad I didn't stick with the yearly subscription model of Premiere Pro.

Agreed!

R3D is a closed codec is it not? Do you not use RED cameras?
