  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PROMETHEUS Reaction (((NO SPOILERS till June 8)))

Don't get so down on this... it's only a movie. And who cares what other people think. Always go into films with zero expectations.

I'm now really worried as well. Even the positive reviews on RT have been lukewarm at best. I really wish they had put the script in the hands of someone else. I'm wondering if there is going to be a directors cut that gets it right. I really depressed at this point. There was no film that I was looking forward too more than this film and if it fails to deliver, 2012 will be a disappointment in my book. Negative reactions to early Hobbit screenings and now this. What a shame. This film had so much potential. I'm really hoping that this is not another Avatar i.e. amazing visual coupled with a crap script.

I say it all the time in my business. I take my craft seriously, but at the end of the day... it's only a movie. :)
When I watch a movie and it begins to go down hill, instead of getting worked up about it, I'll try to learn something from it.

What's that supposed to mean?

Just saw it again in IMAX 3D, after seeing on very large screen Dolby 3D. Dialogue was clearer. 3D due to size of screen more immersive, but ghosting slightly more, especially on floating text.

Liked it better the second time, and less bothered by the dialogue, and found David character more sympathetic. However, the script structure, plot holes and overall characterisation are still a problem. Not a bad film. But not a masterpiece. Alien and Blade Runner still set the high bar for Ridley Scott SciFi.

Don't worry man. We've still got The Dark Knight Rises to rely on and "The Hobb-"...yeh...we've still got The Dark Knight Rises to rely on :D

Saw it the other day.
My thoughts, I might be old but 3D is not my thing. This time I was in a decent theater, sitting in the center of if, trying to look at it with an open mind. But even before I get trough the intro I try to take the glasses off and see if it's not possible to view the film without them.. but no, it of course, looks even worse with no glasses.

I actually thought I would see superb imagery, and do not take me wrong I understand that it's all beautiful, I saw the trailer on the apple web page and it looks smashing. But in the movie theatre it just looks almost black and white and I get rainbowing on the edges and the actually 3D effect is very settled, but still it gives me a headache and I can for the life of me not think of any reason what so ever to show the film in stereo. it's not like in avatar where we fall over the edge in every second shot or such. So for my part I would have liked it better flat.

I will go to the only 4k cinema in town for a review and let you know if I still stand by my guns, but I actually think that will be the case.
I can not understand why there is no good standard for 3D. Like Lucas made THX back in the days. Shooting in stereo today considering the theatres thats out there...The only reason I could think of is that it makes it harder to camcord the film and make a "screener copy".

Im looking forward for the new TotalRecall that as I understand it, is not shot in stereo but still looks very epic from looking at the trailer.

Prometheus script was quite flat, Character also being a bit to clumbsy... still with that taken into account and also all the above.... this is a huge, can not miss film, that is better than most.

Saw the movie, and I can only agree with what a lot of people here are talking about:

nice visuals (although not on the same level of Alien and Blade Runner to my opinion) but really a poor excuse of a script. Yes, it can be exciting at times, some nice nasty scenes, but the whole thing begins falling apart if you begin realizing after 45 minutes that the screenwriters and the director didn't seem to know where they were going with their story.

Characters doing stupid things, characters having very little or no motivations for some acts, non-believable scenes (because of poor characterizations, I think), and all the interesting ideas that people talk about ('spiritual sci-fi, humanity, aliens, ...') all get touched upon (very lightly, to be honest) in the first 45 minutes, and then you start to feel that the script is going nowhere. To the end you keep waiting for a lot of it to make sense, that there would be some revelations in the end that gave you a big aha moment. But nothing.
It's EXACT the same thing that I'm gonna call the LOST-syndrome: start of with a good idea (what a lot of writers can do) and then go exactly nowhere. Don't flesh it out, don't resolve questions, don't do anything interesting with all the interesting themes you are playing with.
And even not regarding the themes: just as a 'simple' movie it had huge narrative issues too.

SPOILER WARNING: Why did David do the things he did? What did all the goo on the planet do? One time it made someone in a zombie, the other time it killed them, the other time it made them sick, the other time, ... Why did the creators make them? Why did they tried to kill them? Suddenly you have the (really bad) zombie scene, then suddenly you don't hear anything about it anymore. Oh wait, let's cuddle an alien snake on an alien planet, I'm the best biologist out there! People are on the biggest discovery on earth, 2 people are left behind, and you know what we'll do? We will NOT monitor their video cameras and just... do what actually?
The Shaw character: suddenly she's on an operating table. You know, she just hits someone, runs away, and no-one follows here. After doing a great surgery (loved that scene in itself btw) she just gets away and walks, no-one talks about it ever again. The other people were suddenly busy... doing what again?
Then she goes casually sitting to talk to Weyland (whose motivations and relation to David and his daughter are AGAIN not fleshed out) about that they were wrong. No further explanation.
And at the end? I'll go to another planet again, again to find answers. What? Are you kidding me? You think I'm gonna follow you again (as a viewer) to just get non-answers again? You lost my confidence.
I could go on and on and on about the bad things in this script. /END OF SPOILERS

Ugh. Bumped. And this got a green light, with such a talented pole of people?
To be honest: I think a lot of the reviews are being very mildly about the scripts short-comings. When I came out of the theatre I know it wasn't good. When I got home and thought about it, the longer I thought about it, the worse it became in my mind.
Maybe there's a better movie on the cutting floor somewhere, but to be honest, I doubt it very much.

The movie is a great act 1 for a new major series. There is a ton of content in this movie, set design is completely awesome, I hope they take the new Dragon sensor and scan the crap out of that set. The 3-D btw didn't work for me, perhaps it was were I was sitting, I saw a slight double image through the movie.

Patrick, I know I'm being hard here, and I totally respect your opinion, but I'm hearing a lot of the same thing from people defending this movie, and to me it sounds like an excuse for the lazy script writing of this movie. And I'm pretty open in my movie taste, and I don't always need to have a very perfect closure of everything, but this movie's weaknesses were beyond something like that.

what happened to NO SPOILERS ??

lol

Im not reading any of this.. Im seeing it Sundayon Imax 3-D - Stadium Seating state of the art sound... :)

Just saw it in IMAX 3D. WOW! It looks amazing, 3D is superb, and cinematography = insanely beautiful.

Story was ok for what it is....You can't judge this on Alien or Aliens or you will not be completely satisfied. Its a great concept with a few flaws, but come on people, it's still good. Maybe it's not in the top 100 best screenplays ever but it's entertaining. That's what a film is supposed to be. It's an adventure... I honestly think they cut a lot of the "information" out of the film. I'm sure a directors cut will have some more info. But I feel like the story we got was in a way "Engineered" to keep us in the dark a bit. Think about it.....

The 3D is excellent. Im really picky when it comes to 3D even being a young guy. The only time I had an issue with the 3D was during fast pans or really fast motion when you get motion blur. (Hopefully the Hobbit and 48fps will reduce the blur and make it easier on the eyes and brain.) Fast action was minimal so not much of an issue. That was my only concern. People who say the 3D is a gimmick or plain and simple not good, I don't know what to say. 3D isn't a cheesy gimmick where objects are flying at you from every direction. Don't expect that. I think if it works for the specific film why not shoot stereo? Honestly, I have never looked into a "window" of 3D footage like I have with this movie. Sure nothing is popping out of the screen but I honestly felt immersed in the film. I think that is what 3D is all about, and becoming a part of the film. It was literally like a window in the screen that I was watching.

Cinematography was great. Lighting was superb. Definitely fit the style and mood of the film. Stylized but in a good way. This along with great 3D really immersed me.

I honestly hope there is a sequel that will maybe fill in the missing info from this film and continue "the mission." I mean people have been ripping the screenplay but what if this was the intention for the first of said number of films. Maybe we were meant to be kept in the dark the same way as the "Engineers" intentions for humanity. Obviously you can argue on either side, but you can not compare it to any other film or screenplay. If you hold it up against some of the best sci fi films in history sure story wise it will be lacking slightly, but don't go in with those expectations and just enjoy it.

I recommend everyone seeing the film.

I enjoyed it... Give it a chance... 3D isn't going away anytime soon, so embrace it, and grow with it. It will get better and to a point where everyone will love it. I guarantee it.

Given that the writer of LOST had final crack at the script, it's not really surprising.

BTW I agree with the remaining points, great set up, sets, and visuals that went...nowhere.

SPOILER

Oddly, I'd like to see the next film if they get a better writer that goes to the alien planet. (Oh, who am I kidding, if Ridley makes it, I'll see it!)

/SPOILER

I saw it in 3D IMAX. The 3D was very solid, and the Epic performed beautifully. It's too bad the story just wasn't there.

Giants. God want's to kill you. You want your parents dead. Rape monsters growing from slime. You growing from slime. Where's the problem with any of that?

Oh, and all spoken with purely beautiful cinematic expression.

Oh and notable mentions all over but especially to Fassbender's recreation of Ash as Weyland,,,

Come on now!

edit: Story? It's all questions. Look for answers until you die. Have faith in something and you will find others that have faith in something. God is going to kill you either way. In the Scott/ Geiger universe he is also going to rape you.

I saw it in 3D IMAX as well. The opening scene was some of the best 3D I've seen, but there were serious issues with backgrounds in some of the 'desert' landscape shots. Things looked out of focus in an unnatural way, muddled. There was a bit of ghosting as well on hard edges occasionally and on subtitles consistently. Maybe there was a projection issue, but the IMAX bit that runs before the film was stunning, and entire scenes in the film looked fine. Did anyone have a similar experience?

IMAX 3D in Long Beach, CA had no issues. Like I said above it was the best 3D I have seen. No ghosting, no weirdness, no strain. By the end I forgot I was even wearing glasses. Honestly...

I just got done watching it in Imax 3D.

*****SPOILERS********

Like people have said, visuals are breathtaking...

Yes, the story did leave some plot holes, but my main concern was the lack of character development we had on any of these people. The only person I cared about was the Captain of the ship, and Shaw. That's it.... Out of a 17 man crew.... I wanted to really care, because I remember seeing Alien and just being completely overwhelmed with how I didn't want anything bad to happen to anyone... But in Prometheus, I kind of just didn't care.

Now, with questions not being answered, I kind of like it how it is. I might be giving it too much credit, but I feel like the script was written to do exactly what it was supposed to do. Make us want to know more, and be on the brink of knowing and not getting any answers. It is how life is now and we always try to find more and more and more, but in the end, it is most likely that we will never know until the end.

So that is what compels me to see the sequel, if there is one. Hell, maybe James Cameron will do it and it will be action packed.

The only part I absolutely hated, was when the Space Jockey, got out from his sleep, and petted Davids hair after David spoke to him.... That didn't make sense and it kind of just made me mad.

But! I would go see it again. It was fun.

**Spoiler (kinda)**

The main question I came away from the film with is:

What did David say to the Space Jockey aka Engineer after he woke him up? Did he ask what Weyland was asking, or what Shaw was asking, or something completely different? That could explain why he "pet" David's hair before his actions...

Just saw it too. Really good in all ways. Dariusz Wolski did a amazing job with great visuals. Loved the really wide shots. 3D was cool, not any sea sickness for me. Really clean shots with not any much visible noise in the darks. Noomi Rapace was insanely good, and specially in the med-pod scene. Great animation and dyn sim with the ship landing and the sandstorm. I thought it was awesome because they made a great film adventure, also met up the continuity with Alien and also planted a seed for a amazing sequel. This is a really great job. The only thing that I think they did not follow the design laws on was the xenomorph itself.
