  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PROMETHEUS Reaction (((NO SPOILERS till June 8)))

Don't get me wrong, the film LOOKED really good. The special effects were great as well...and yet...

It's hard to criticize the story without going into spoilers...but to put it simply:

- The characters seemed to undergo personality transplants every 15 minutes or so, and the decisions some of them made were just...ridiculous.
- The film created way too many questions, which weren't resolved. This doesn't surprise me, considering Damon Lindelof of LOST wrote the script.
- The characters were paper thin. The only person I actually cared about was our android friend Mr. Fassbender.
- Random un-introduced crew members seemed to pop up all over the place...in pretty important roles.
- The twists and turns all took place within the final 10 minutes of the film. I was still wrapping my head around one concept, and they were throwing 10 others at me!

BUT...I am excited to see a sequel, provided they address some of these script and story issues. It felt more like a big build up to a potential sequel film, rather than a satisfying stand alone piece.

Alien never built up to Aliens. It created an idea, toyed with it, and resolved it.

DAMN it... Even though there are no spoilers in this thread, it was a mistake coming in here. Why? Why did I do it?

If you guys are even half-truthful with the characters-making-stupid-decisions assessment, then I fear this movie is gonna be broken for me. With Alien, the only major stupidity was with Dallas letting Kane come back on the ship with a head hugger attached (breaking protocol); but that mistake is what allowed Ripley's leadership to rise to the surface (in other words, it was a catalyst for her character and very important.) That's what made it so great. If Prometheus just has people doing stupid things as a way to allow for more cool visuals than it will kill my motivation for the film as a whole (regardless of whether or not it looks amazing... like Avatar).

"Smart" sci-fi doesn't even need to be smart anymore, it just has to have common sense. I shouldn't've come into this thread.

Decent space-centric Sci-Fi? Pandorum, Pitch Black, Sunshine, The Thing (remake "prequel" too), Star Trek (2009 - although it was more action/adventure), Solaris (remake).

If there is to be a sequel, I hope they continue making these ads between films. Even broaden the concept, for example: The Prometheus Chronicles: a series of shorts/ads that will expand upon,
and perhaps even redefine the feature film's ideas. The nice thing about these "ads" is that they don't have to match stylistically or intercut within the mainframe of the movie itself.
They are like so many satellites...

Let's put it this way...they just do stupid things, ridiculous things that you'd think a team of earth's best and brightest wouldn't dream of doing. Two minutes people are friends, the next minute they're enemies, the next minute they're chilling with each other again (literally, this all happens in the space of 4 minutes).

Does "Gattaca" make it on anyone else's Sci Fi meter? or "Code 46" - Michael Winterbottom's understated film, with Samantha Morton and Tim Robbins?

I was very excited to see this film but now I am just bummed out...

Seen it twice now and it's utterly marvellous. Without going into spoiler territory:

Amazing cinematography and stereography. Brilliant concept and plot. Some performances and lines aren't great but it's so difficult to make a feature film in the first place let alone an outstanding one like Prometheus.

I can see why pretty much every freelance artist I know worked on it. The sets and number of designs were huuuuuge!

The first 5 minutes are filled with so much cosmic beauty that I could have left the theatre happy at that point.

Visually up to scratch. 3D done very well. Story and characterisation disappointing. And yes trailer was too on the nose.

Favourite genre films - Gattaca is on my list. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was arguably a great romantic SciFi. Blade Runner and Alien genre defining. Original theatrical Close Encounters blew me away at the time. Silent Running.

You have to realize that we began RED (about 6 years ago) to design and build a proper film replacement camera. A few years later... one of my heroes (Ridley Scott) shoots Prometheus on our cameras. It is his 1st movie not shot on film. After shooting... his comment is "film grain is so "1960's". :-)

This is dream come true for me... everything we could have imagined. And this is the same camera that is in the hands of many.

I can't help but sit back and enjoy the moment. There aren't many moments in life that measure up to this one...

Jim

You more than fully deserve to enjoy your 2012 box office output. You have done what you came for. This is nothing short of amazing.
You have the right to proud of what you achieved in your life. This is your baby. You made this come true!

Veni vidi vici!

A true fan!

Can't wait to see this... so bummed that we've got to wait until the 8th here in the States. As far as good sci fi over the past decade or so, I actually really liked Minority Report. I loved Sunshine but was so disappointed in the 3rd act that it kind of just ruins the whole movie for me now. Event Horizon has some creepy moments but on the whole also descends into that lowest common denominator type of action / horror.

enjoy it with a nice glass of red wine and a big fat cuban please : )

Well, everyone else seems blown away. I guess I'll have to give it a second go in IMAX 3D.

Have to say its the best implementation of 3d I've seen in a film so far. Very wide depth of field, not too fast editing. Ridleys style certainly suits 3d shooting and IMO this is how 3d should be shot. I also thought the red footage looked great. On a technical level the film was brilliantly engineered.

But like others I thought the script was muddled, with unclear themes and so many times I was left going 'eh' at the course of events. Was so hyped for this but it really didn't feel anything like a masterpiece, but a fun summer popcorn flick if you're willing to overlook the scripts flaws.

Ps if hou haven't watched the second extended trailer-don't. It's 99% of the plot.

I wish we had IMAX like in the states.... Sigh!

Once IMAX goes all digital in the next few years, you will get it in the large-format as they replace the older 70mm setups and build new digital dome projection venues, and you will love it so much that you won't ever want to go back to a regular theater.

Bigger is not the answer for most decent movies. Sure, for spectacles it can be OK, but give me an intimate theatre any day of the week. How big and loud do things have to get?

To me, the only real disappointment in the script was the half-baked "love story". It didn't really work. I kind of feel like that whole character of that male scientist could have been tossed out and there could have been some other way to achieve the same plot goals. But we are talking about 5% of the film.

You guys are making me nervous. I was hoping for a great script. That combined with strong visuals, great acting, etc. I'm hoping when I see it in a week or so that I disagree with some of you. This has been one of the few movies I'be been looking forward to. Hoping it's not a letdown.

I'm now really worried as well. Even the positive reviews on RT have been lukewarm at best. I really wish they had put the script in the hands of someone else. I'm wondering if there is going to be a directors cut that gets it right. I really depressed at this point. There was no film that I was looking forward too more than this film and if it fails to deliver, 2012 will be a disappointment in my book. Negative reactions to early Hobbit screenings and now this. What a shame. This film had so much potential. I'm really hoping that this is not another Avatar i.e. amazing visual coupled with a crap script.
