  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pro I/O Module - Info and Pics?

Not sure about that guys, the older design of the I/O module was shorter, and the system with the adapter, I/O and battery module was thought not to be longer than the Red One, although the comparison pic below is with a Scarlet and was very old idea.

There are so many things I don't really need in the Pro I/O module, that I'd like to propose a simple Dual Audio XLR input module. The shorter, the better...

+1 on the shorter module. I sure hope it's not that huge thing earlier in the thread.

And what is that wheel thing hanging on the left side?

+1 here in Estonia as well. It just makes all the sense in the world to have EVF for Cinematographer/Camera Operator and 5" touchscreen (or even better 7" and matte screen) for AC to control the camera and all settings of the Epic.

If we could just get a second evf/lcd port on the camera, maybe through a "PRO" DSMC 1.8" SSD Side Module with two of them, I think it would solve a lot of people's problems. Generally on set we require an EVF port of the DOP, and monitor for the AC (and being able to use a RED MONITOR with the touch screen would be great) and a HD-SDI out for the director/client. Just one more connection than the brain has is all we need and I'd love to have that without the need for something as large as the PRO I/O module.

Sam, the additional port on the side SSD is a genius idea, but likely one we'll never see:

The components for generating a second feed might need more space than the slim SSD module takes up, unless they make it wider, posing compatibility issues with the cage system. I for one could care less about ribs on the side of a camera, but it looks bad to release a $1300 cage then make it obsolete when a genius new SSD module comes out. It could also be too much throughput for the SSD module to handle, but I doubt that, I have a feeling Red designed like Marantz, everything underclocked, ready to be pushed further.

Second is the fact that Red hears the complaint all the time 'its such a small camera...' what we love, many union ACs and operators dislike. They've done one job for 20 years with a camera that basically hasn't changed shape, now the Epic requires them to think differently. On big jobs the camera tends to get built out with all the large high end lenses and accessories that the small DSMC size is more of a quirk than a positive.

The pro io serves the purpose of giving a recognizable form factor to an industry that expects one; at least in some circles, this is more important than a few more SDI connections.

Here's a neat idea! Currently the main reason why people want a pro I/O is for using two red monitoring options at once. Currently the only port is on the side SSD module. Since they canned the basic I/O module maybe a second EVF/LCD port will be on the rear SSD module announced on the back order list. That would certainly solve all my monitoring problems & length issues with the pro I/O. And there's no harm in having two SSD cards at the same time for longer recording!
