  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pre-production EPIC-Ms...

That would certainly work too, but it might be worth more down the line.
You could rent it, or you could even sell it for $200k the day you get it.
I think you could sell it for even more in 100 years (or kept in the family for ever, etc).
So I'd rent it, use it, and hold on to it.

Point is, anyway you look at it, it is a steal.

If this becomes a reality for me, then I am going to take my Epic-M on a skiing trip this Christmas...
well, yeah I know that's a heck of a lot of wishful thinking for me since it's my luck that my serial will be right after the cut-off for the production run for the machined Epics...

Noah, you may be technically right on weight, but an aluminum body may have to be thicker and have heavier alloys to get the same strength as an all titanium body. I don't know. What I do know is that I'm not the only person to suggest making the body lighter. The concept of fibreglas or something similar came up not long ago.

Thanks for your insight.

... if titanium cuts down the weight by 2-3 pounds, then I can see a real benefit to some people.

Ti weighs more than Al.

It weighs 60% more but is stronger than aluminum. So to get equal structural strength you would have to make it thinner.

I'm not sure how easily you could modify the dimensions of the EPIC chassis to get below the weight of aluminum to make it significantly lighter. Although, if anyone could do it, RED can.

There is a "get" and a "give" philosophy to everything it seems ...

... what about gaining more time to do what matters ...
lifetime?
priceless.

Ti weighs more than Al.

Not for the same strength. You can use a lot thinner sheets of titanium to make things from, so you can have a significant weight saving.

You cannot easily machine it, though - you will probably have to weld and grind it instead. Making stuff from titanium is slow and expensive work.

Important Question

Important Question

Will the 78K EPIC-M Titanium package parts be thinner and therefore lighter then the 58K EPIC-M ... ?

How much of a difference in weight would it make for the described kits?

Thanks.

... would someone "in the know @ RED" be able to answer this ... please
:-)

where is it stated that there is a 78 k epic M and a 58 k epic M.
whats the difference.
or was it guessing?

... first thread of last week ... [thread closed, not link quotable, copied below]

"We could machine them out of titanium... package price goes to $78K. :-)

Jim"

I hate to burst your bubble, guys, but I think Jim was joking. Note the smiley.

Certainly the only sensible thing to do with titanium is to use less of it, and that would require a complete redesign of all the components so I doubt it would be feasible. Cool, but not feasible :).

The way I took it was that Jim was sorta half joking. What I mean is that he figured heck I'll throw out a number and if someone really wants to pay 20k more we'll do it plus they always like doing "cool" things and customizations. While titanium costs much more due to more expensive materials as well as added machining hours and cost of tools wearing out quicker I still have a feeling that there is quite a bit of room for some extra profit in there as well. Just my thoughts anyways, I am just guessing.

You don't want a titanium body.

Jim

I think I went nuts and sent a all bunch of them, I'll make it up to you with Tirami Su' for the extra work caused hehe

Lasagna?

Dear Red Support, I need to send my Epic in for repair. I ran over it with my truck. I assume this will be covered under warranty.

Kind Regards,

Dear Custommer,

Please locate the power button on your Epic, press it once and continue using your camera to your enjoyment.

As to your truck, please send it to our Bomb Squad for evaluation and we will see if we can fix it or if it is a complete write-off. :smilielol5:
