I dont understand all the technical terms but I am trying to find out the equivalent of an 8x zoom to what it would be in mm. For example is it the equivalent to a 18-85mm zoom?

Any info would be great and forgive me for being a newbie in filmmaking and lenses.

And fixed Scarlet's 8x zoom will supposedly be 7.2-57.6 mm, although Jim Jannard hasn't officially confirmed that.

Jim did say that it starts at 28mm (equiv. on 35mm still), but that was before November 13th. Presumably, that would mean 28-224mm equiv. zoom.

Yeah, the diagonal for a 2/3-inch lens is 11 mm, and about 43 mm for 35-mm still. So 11/43 of 28 is about 7.2 or so. I don't really see the endpoints of the zoom range changing, but I've been wrong many, many times before. By the way, Zurfus, the terminus ad quem of the zoom range on your chart should be 57.6, not 56.7.

1?

1?

If the 35mm equivalent of the Scarlet will be 28mm to 224mm, does anyone know if RED will sell a doubler? I shoot concerts and events from further back and I could use the extra zoom on their fixed lense. Anyone have an idea if this will be an easy accessory to buy and add on?

Thanks.

Oh and one other thing. Because it is 3K and more than 3 times the number of pixels as my current Sony Z1u (1.5M pixels vs around 5M pixels for Scarlet), I believe I will be able to "digitally" zoom into the video in post and get roughly the same image resolution (but with far better dynamic range) and get about 75% more zoom when compared to my current set up...so 224mm (35mm equivalent) would equate to roughly 400mm compared to my Sony Z1u which goes up to about 360mm (35mm equivalent). Now with a doubler I could get twice as close IF it's high quality. I wonder if I'd lose some stops though. I'm sure I would.

thanks for the help. That answers alot of questions. I will definately be getting the fixed lense scarlet. I hope they ship soon.

RED has said that they will be making tele and wide extenders. They said they will be very high quality (and therefore a bit expensive). Typically extenders that attach to the front of the lens do not loose light.

True, you will be able to do a significant amount of cropping (thereby increasing the effective zoom range.)

Thanks...good to know I am understanding how Scarlet can help me. I wonder what "expensive" would mean for a doubler/teleconverter...$300...$500...$1,000 or more??

One last thing....do to the fact I shoot 2 hour concerts, any idea if an SSD would be either included or an accessory that I could buy that would fit a full 2 hours on it? I figure a 256GB SSD could hold close to 2.5 hours?
