I hope I will not get me into the "bad attitude" segment of redusers, but I really have a feeling this is reflecting badly on this board.

I made this post:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=182874&postcount=24

and I stand by it.

I see that lots of the stuff happening here is noise, and it is hard to filter through it. But on the other hand, many of the posts that get cencored are by knowledgeable people and I find that a hard choice.

I think (me thinks sincerely really :) ) that stupid posts will disappear all by themselves. And stuff like Laguuns overzealus outpointing of Scratch's publicli known "shortcommings" is not a good argument to cut off posts.

I'll be getting my RED tomorrow and I'll do what I can to attend RED day in Cal, I might even buy Scratch ;), but this thing is becoming annoying.

Sorry if this reflects bad attitude. It is reallly not meant to be.

It is interesting.

Recently a collegue of mine has proposed to Dalsa that we do a RED/Dalsa shoot off.

Dalsa's attitude has been great. Very open. They aren't afraid of RED.

Unlike Panavision who seem to be taking a hard line. I am going to ask them, and Kodak if they want to participate, but I know what the answer will be.

I should preface this with...I just wired my $$$ for #1297. I am a believer! But RED is not the "cure all". Different systems are suitable for different projects.

I believe that Dalsa probably has better Dynamic range. The optical viewfinder is miles ahead of RED. But I sure can't have one ready to go in a case in my basement.

That said, I will use RED on many projects - where it is appropriate.

To think that RED is getting their back up and "sensoring" this board is hard to believe.

It is a brilliant camera.

And so is film, Dalsa, Genesis, etc...in their own way.

It's not an easy thing opening up the development of a camera to the entire community like this. Remember, most cameras pop out onto the market fully formed, you'll be lucky if even 10% of your suggestions make it to the next version (which you have to buy anyway).

Sometimes Red and us Mods have to make difficult choices. We do want an open a freethinking community, but Red is still a business and has a right to protect that business, I honestly don't have the inside info as to how or why they protect it in the way they do but I appreciate their right to do so. It's the price we pay for having them here day in and day out listening to us and making not only a great product but a better one every time you download an update.

If you really feel the need to hammer on points you know are going to arouse Red's ire, or create incendiary threads that directly challenge the quality of the product then I'm sure you will be welcomed with open arms over at the Canon and Sony forums... Oh wait, they don't have any.:bye2: :bye2:

RED has a user forum for fans who put a deposit and wait for two years. That does not make the RED camera any better. Canon and Sony does not have user forums. But, they have over 100,000 engineers who develop and thoroughly test and quality produce their products before bringing them to market. Fans simply check out the Cameras and if satisfied, buy and take it home: no waiting.

As far as threads disappearing, I agree that RED has a right to manage the forums any way they choose. I have noticed many threads and posts disappear.
That is RED's prerogative. This forum is for praising RED and worshipping Jim. RED is a remarkable idea at that price point and has generated a lot of enthusiasm and Jim is a clever businessman. But, one has to recognise there are other competitors. 35 mm film will continue to dominate theatrical movie production and distribution for the next 5 years (according to Kodak).

It makes me shake my head to see people bashing other forums here on reduser, in particular cinematography.com

This is usually because their is a perception of anti-red bias. You claim to want an open and freethinking community, but clearly that is not what you have.

Vigourous discourse and free speech usually make for a better and more rounded view.

I believe editing someone's post without their knowledge is unethical. Period. If someone (who exactly is this someone?) makes an edit or deletes a post, the poster should be notified. Secretly shutting someone up or changing their words or opinions in a public forum is not acceptable imho. If you have to do it notify the poster.

Of this forum...I ain't a fan of Red...I'm an investor in Red.

They give me the respect that is due an investor.

I know Red realise the path they must tread to maintain the trust of their investors and not to abuse this.

To date, I feel they have more than honoured this. Therefore, >4000 other investors have/will also invest >$40,000 in Red.This compares to 100's of investor in a comparable product from a different company.
Censorship to protect your brand....boy, thats on a wild road ....straight down!!
But I don't think or I hope Red are about that.
That's just too too stupid. Nah I don't believe they'd do that....can someone give an example of this?

Cheers,

I'm choosing to self-edit a post I made here, partly because of the post following it by Jim and partly because I'm tired and fear I may say something stupid or inaccurate. For the record I'm not accusing anyone of anything and I certainly didn't start it. But there is a post of mine that after someone else mentioned it I can't seem to find. But like I said, I might just be too tired to find it so I'll keep quiet.

Threads don't disappear, they get "moved" if they stray off-topic. If a thread gets lost, it is an error. I can only think of one thread that we "took down" and that was for obvious reasons.

For example... the Bond 22/Dalsa thread was moved to "Off Topic". Moved- not deleted.

We had one poster complain on another board that his post was modified. It wasn't (still up today as he wrote it)... but that didn't stop hours of wasted time talking about the "ethics" here.

It is easy to stir up shit here if you are so inclined. And it is very interesting how quickly people pile on.

Mitch... you brought me a cake last year to NAB. I'll help you FIND your post!

There is never, ever a reason to modify someone's post. The only reason one of the moderators would ever delete a post would be if it was EXTREMELY inflammatory or disrespectful. And those have been few. One thread, that I know of, was taken down... again for very obvious reasons.

This is our home. We are protective of it. But we are also patient enough to let everyone have their say. Skepticism and counter-points live here. Just read the Cineform threads. Complaints live here. We endure them and often learn from them. It is absolutely NOT in our best interests, or the interests of our customers, to censor this board.

Jim

I think I remember that thread. Good decision to take it doun, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Very rarely does anything around here get deleted. Censorship is not something any of us moderators actively participate in. It rubs me the wrong way when people start complaining about censorship when that isn't what is going on. If something is posted for the sole purpose of being inflammatory or to directly attack or insult other members of this community, then it may warrant deletion. In most situations, threads are locked and/or moved and we get along with our lives.

Various technical threads have been modified in the workflow forums, some even deleted because they no longer contain accurate information. Luki is currently doing some house cleaning in the SCRATCH forum. The best way to put it is that he's "taking out the trash". If this has effected anyones' posts in any way, please let us know.

Threads / posts are often moved because they need to be elsewhere. In most situations, the only posts that get deleted are erroneous duplicates and spam. And even many of those slip through the cracks. To be frank about it, I wish many members here would take an extra 5 seconds to post their new thread to the proper forum instead of just dumping in the primary RED One forum. There are days where I feel I have moved every new thread into the OT and Accessories forums.

I think they're referring to this thread:

Moved: RED Not Good Enough for James Bond
ChrisLyon

And when you click on it, you get the error message. If you view Chris Lyon's posts, his are missing entirely. Having been a forum admin in a prior life, it looks like the thread was probably just accidentally moved to an unviewable forum or something. Pics also attached for clarification purposes.

I've got nothing against either of the cinematography dot sites I subscribe to a couple of CML threads and find some of the posts quite informative.

I disagree that we don't have a on open, freethinking community, just like our own good ol' USA you can say whatever you want but threatening the presidents life or crank calling 911 is still illegal. At some point some posts and posters cross the line. There need to be consequences for that. I've never seen any legitimate, constructive criticism or complaint deleted or edited or modified. And I always take a considered approach to moving threads. But it should be obvious if you ask an FCP question in the Red one forum it's probably gonna get moved where it belongs.
