RedOneMXRig.jpg

BT R1 MX.
This is the Budget Rig!
ET 15mm Top Mounts
ET 15mm Front Adaptor
ET Vibration Mount
Red Drive
Cheap $20 ebay 15mm cheese plate as battery mount, works great.

SmallHD DP4

Already had: Shoot35 Matte Box, F/Focus
Gini Rig parts
Rode Videomic (I know, I know..but it gets me audio for now)

LOVING the new rig!
The Manfrotto is holding up nicely too! Not bad for a 501/525 combo. Will also upgrade in the fullness of time.

Need a top handle tho!!!

Leo, Does the DP4 work good with R1? its easy to pull focus?

So far so good! The peaking feature on the monitor works great for focusing on the go. It's great as a monitor and an EVF.

Im really happy with it. Red footage looks immaculate, though I did see a greenish tint in some lights with factory settings, that weren't here in he final footage. Might have to keep calibrating.

Thanks Leo,

Anyone knows where to buy a DP4 in Europe?

I just bought one from SmallHD, not sure if there are any resellers in Europe, didn't find any.
Right now they are giving a 50$ discount so perhaps it's a good time for you to buy one.

Thank you guys, I'm still thinking in my options...

They are, smallHD DP4, smallHD AC7, Lilliput 5DII or Lilliput 663, this last one does 1280x800 native...

Meanwild I decided to sell my RED EVF with Ronford-Baker EVF mount, I need to reduce weight on my setup urgently, cause in the places I'm filming in the wild it's beeing extremelly difficult to take my R1 setup, I decided to sell my cradle and Drive to invest in SSD, but have many proposal for the drive, but the Cradle is beeing difficult to sell. I didn´t want o sell the EVF, cause is working great, but have no other way...

I think for the money the 663 IPS would be great, if it works with RED. I'm just now hearing good things about it. I nearly went for it, but could't find any reviews at that time, so went for a more trusted source from SmallHD as people seemed to prefer the colour accuracy, and features over the Lilliputs.

I already have an older Lilliput that doesn't work with my R1, and thought it was time to get a smallHD monitor, second-hand!

I found a great deal on dxvuser, and that was the deciding factor for me. And Im very happy with it.

Nice setup Leo. Looks kinda preety almost, with all the red bits.

Do you actually need the other set of rods at the bottom of the camera tho? Looks odd?

Cool you got the mini cheese plate working there! I was hoping to screw it directly to the top mount but sadly the holes don't really line up enough for it to be practical. :(

My setup:

SMALL HD Monitor DPx1 (9”)
Red Cradle
Shoulder Dovetail
Battery 220wh Dyconic
Zacuto Jeep adapter 19mm to 15mm
Tilta follow focus 15mm and focus gears
Tilta Matte box 4x4 15mm
Tripod Oconnor 35L
Miller 30 head

The tilta matte box it is made of carbon fiber so is light, i have to test it with filters.
I`m thinking to change the Jeep adapter for a longvalley Lightweight Rod Support, but I do not like the idea to remove the screws and i don`t know how much weight it resist.
I chose the Smallhd DPX1 instead the Red LCD because I can use this with my DSLR, also the 15mm matte box and follow focus.
The Miller 30 is a 20 years old head but seems to work fine with my setup.
It is my new baby so I prepared the bedroom with sheeps and toys for her arrival :yesnod:

Hey ben hows the tilta follow focus going for you? Does it have any play at all? I was looking at them before but didn't know anything about them... i need a new FF.

Thanks Freya, I do get excited looking at it! ;)

The rods at the bottom are temporary for when I attempt shoulder-mounted. I attach handles to carbon fibre (lower) rods, as Im concerned the ET 15mm front mount is only designed for Mattboxes and FF, not to support 15kg of camera on two small mounts. I could be wrong.

The mini cheese-plate does line up (just) with 2 small 4mm bolts and nuts, mounts firmly, about 10degrees off axis, no big deal. You should be able to mount it no problem. Then it sits on one of the 15mm rods from the ET 15mm top mounts.

It have some minimal play but i think it is the focus gear. I am sure if I test it with a "cinema" lens there is not play at all.
For the price is a very good follow focus, well made, i feel like a Arri FF.

Hmm I wasn't getting it to work! Maybe I didn't have the right angle and the right holes! Will have to try again later!

I don't have any rods at the mo.

I'd love to hear your feedback about filters in the Tilta MB...

Well, so finally I tested my R1 BT last Monday and Tuesday.
The tilta matte box "it did the job". The filter holder are made of plastic and and every time I put the filter in the filter holder I was afraid it would fall as I feel that it not holds as well as a Chrosziel filter holder. Then I placed it gently on the mattebox and after that all good.
I use a 12-24 nikon lens for some shots in slow motion and even in 4k 16x9 there is not vigneting at 12mm.
The donuts are made of neoprene and they are too thin. I think the solution is to cut a mouse pad or get a elastic universal donut adapter.
The mattebox looks great in the R1 and is very light.
I do notice some play in the tilta follow focus but nothing too serious, I always prefer to make focus marks directly into the lens.

Finally I have my rig in a good shape, and here it is:

-Red One MX BT body
-ProLock Nikon mount
-Set of Nikkor AI-primes (85mm/f2 pictured)
-Chrosziel mattebox with DIY swing-away
-Chrosziel studio follow focus (a very old unit)
-Baseplate with 15mm rods and a riser for the LWS-rods
-Old lilliput 7" Hdmi-monitor for the DP (this will be upgraded to SmallHD EVF4)
-Swit 7" HDSDI-monitor for the focus puller
-Both monitors powered via XLR from a motorbike battery, that sits on ground or hangs from the tripod
-ET Breakout Box
-Red cradle mounted on the side, I modified a kind of "shockmount" on it. And 2x 320gb Drives.
-Battery plate (taken from the cradle) mounted on the back
-Cam Caddie cheese plate on top and a DIY top handle
-For power I have a few old V-lock batteries, a DIY 27ahr block battery, and the AC-power.

The whole thing sits on a perfect condition Miller 80 head and legs that I just bought. It's a 20-30 years old tripod but barely used.
This set is clearly for tripod using. For handheld I just remove some of the gear, screw in very basic shoulder support and handgrips.
I'm also doing a "handheld backpack", which is a small pelicase, with backpack straps, and there is a V-lock mount for the battery and a padded holder for the drive. Then there's a long power and drive cable to camera. I also drilled holes on the case so they get fresh air. This way I remove some of the weight on the camera, and the drive shouldn't get any shocks.

I bought most of the parts used, and I had a lot of them before the R1. It's not perfect and there is a lot of "non pro"-gear on the set, and I still need to buy new V-lock batteries, but so far the whole set has cost me about 8500€!

Greetings from cold cold Finland
Mikko
