  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post your BT R1 MX rigs!

And some more from Finland. Mikko - ever need a B-cam, you know where to find me...

Red One MX w/Leitax Canon EF mount
1 x Redmag 1.8″ SSD 64 GB
3 x Red Drive 320 GB
Red Cradle bolted onto 15mm railblock
Red EVF with "custom arm" built from 15mm rods
Red LCD 5.6″
2 x V-mount battery
V-mount charger
Red AC adapter

15 mm LWS rods with WC top mounts (nice because the spacing is exactly right for mounting the FF on top of the lens) + CoolLCD top handle
"Budget" Follow focus Proaim
"Budget" Proaim matte box/filter holder + French flag
3 x ND filters 4×4″

Tripod Vinten 3772-3
Fluid head Manfrotto 516 (yeah, riding it pretty hard with this rig but it'll have to do for the time being...)
Shotgun mic t.bone EM 9600 + shock mount
Elements Breakout Box
Rain cover Camrade wetsuit for Red One

Case full of mostly manual vintage stills glass from 11 to 300 mm

Cheers!
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

How is the sound quality of the t.bone EM 9600?

Best regards

Hi Thomas,

Nice rig ! How did you manage to screw the rig from the top ? Did you have to get RED top mount as well ?

Best regards

Hi,

Haven't yet used it more than a couple of times on some projects where the audio wasn't super critical so haven't done an in-depth evaluation, but so far seems perfectly acceptable, especially for the price... The shock mount that comes with it is pretty cheesy, though, but then again can't expect miracles. :)

Yeah, forgot to mention that above - I just had two generic 15 mm railblocks that I drilled through the center with a 10mm bit and bolted to the 3/8" thread in the middle of the WC top mounts. No Red 19mm hardware anywhere. Works great but for drilling, the rod clamps need to be wide enough to leave enough metal around the hole.

I don't know if it's by design or some cosmic accident, but the end result was that the top rails are the exact standard distance (85 mm) above optical center. So basically it gives the option of mounting the follow focus or matte box either above or below the lens, and the vertical spacing is still correct. Nice for clearing some extra finger space for the old M42 lenses I'm mostly using...

Guys, what's the best solution for mounting my 15mm mattebox to the mx? I contacted Long Valley but they no longer produce the product. What would be your next choice?

I seem to recall seeing a similar product from another company (ET?) but maybe it's no longer available. Failing that, you probably just need to mix and match baseplates and risers to get the spacing you need. As the R1 is built on the 19mm standard it's not easy to fit 15mm gear onto it but it is possible with a bit of effort and creative DIY engineering...

A couple of closer pics from my 15mm solution in the event that it's of use to someone...

Hi Russell, how do you find the 509 handling the weight of the rig? I'm just in the process of replacing my #2 fluid head that was lost in action on a recent shooting trip and have been looking at the 509 as a candidate...

My R1MX BT :)

Pretty much all ET/RED accessories
Genus Mattebox
GMP Batteries
Manfrotto 509 Tripod
Nikon glass

it works ok for lighter weight setups but as soon as you start putting bigger zoom lenses and accessorise on it, the head starts to max out and can't pan or tilt as smooth. i'd probably recommend the next model of head up like the 519..
