  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

As I got a lot of emails asking about our current situation and when the product will be ready and more pictures available I thought to give a short summary.

At the moment we work on the final version as there were some changes in the frame design for easy mechanical adjustments. With our prototype frame it was sometimes difficult to reach the adjustment screws with wider cameras. When the final version is ready we will also publish detailed photos. I think the production version will be ready in the first two weeks of Oktober and we can open pre-orders then. When you order the system, it should be ready for shipment within a time between 4 and 6 weeks.

We'll add joysticks to the handles for single operator mode as we think this is a more precise way of controlling the rig compared to having the rig just follow the movement of the handle bar. Often this is done with a delay like with Freefly's majestic mode or the follow frame mode in the Alexmos software. We also use the Alexmos software and the follow frame mode will be usable, nevertheless. There are 3 configurable profile presets in the alexmos software.

At the moment I plan to use the presets like this but I can also create different presets based on your personal preference (like combining the analog joystick and the overslung mode):
Preset 1: two operator mode with wireless RC control
Preset 2: single operator mode with analog joysticks at the handles
Preset 3: wireless RC control mode but with reversed motor directions for overslung mode with the pan motor below the camera

The overslung mode is mainly thought to put the rig on a steadicam sled. I'll offer a steadicam bracket which can be used instead of the handles and will give an easy and fast way to change between the handles or to mount it on a steadicam. The pan motor will be disconnectable with a lemo connector and the pan axis fixable with a bracket so you can use the system in 2-axis configuration. That will allow for whip pans as well.

We will offer the PortaHead 5 at 5.500 Euro plus VAT. Presumably there will be a deposit payment of 2.500 Euro at time of the order.

We also work on demo videos of the system with long lens examples, aerial and car to car shots but also the additional features like steadicam mode. Here's a first video with some shots (aerial, car to car and handheld):

Many thanks,

Thank you, I almost forgot to mention that the system still uses 25 mm tubes on all axes like the first Movi version did when it was introduced in April. This makes the gimbal configurable in all axes and we can use longer tubes in custom versions, if necessary. This way you can also use larger cameras like the Sony F5 or others with the system. We already tried the F5 with our first prototype and noticed that this is crucial.

Probably the most useful application of this new tech asiade from RC aircraft.

Because the Porta Head 5 allows to create custom versions for longer camera setups by using longer 25 mm tubes it'll be possible to use Red specific modules to power the camera as well.
I mainly think about the dual battery module ( http://www.red.com/store/products/pro-battery-module-dual ) or the Quick-Plate with V-Mount connection ( http://www.red.com/store/products/quickplate-module ).

Yesterday I did car to car driving shots with some colleagues and a porsche. David Kellermann joined us with his Scarlet and we used it with the Portahead 5 (thanks a lot, David!). We managed to power camera, remote focus and the gimbal with a single v-mount battery and a d-tap junction box but then used a separate battery for the rig to have a longer shooting time without the need for a battery change. As the handheld system was supported with bunggee cords from the back door of our van the stabilization was great, even with the 85 mm lens.

Today I'll drive to Berlin for a week at another project with driving shots and the Epic and think I can edit a new demo after. I hope we can finish the final version of the Portahead 5 in the first two weeks of Oktober.

Hello,

I was working as B camera and steadicam operator at a feature the last 5 weeks and therefore didn't had time to continue with development. However, my partner sold some brushless gimbals for multicopters and two customers build up a very nice demo video in the last months. The pid settings of the gimbal are created and tested by me :).

The upcoming Porta Head series has a different mechnical setup which brings improvements in weather resistance as all the electronics are in a covered in a case. Also there will be a joystick for single operator mode in addition to the wireless remote and the possibility to use the head in overslung mode with the pan motor below the camera. Will post pictures and videos of the new features in 2 or 3 weeks.

Many thanks,
Andreas Kielb

The Porta Heads 2 and 5 are available for pre-order now. Still waiting for IMU protective cases before I'll make final pictures. The final Porta Head 5 uses the iflight 8017 motors for all axis. Otherwise the frame is like in this older picture:

Included in the system is the rc remote, a joystick for direct control of pan and tilt, a docking stand and a travelling case. Delivery time will be 4 weeks after pre-order to assemble the head. Here is a online spot for Daimler Insurance Services. The Porta Head 5 prototype was used for car-to-car driving shots with the Sony F5. More videos will follow soon.

I would lie to preorder. How do I do this? I wrote you months ago and never heard back.

I'm sorry Scott, I thought I answered all emails but probably missed yours or a few more. Development and testing also took longer then expected. I just send you a private message.

Best regards,

Nice design, but what ever you do, try to absolutely keep the POWER off camera, as 5kg... Is just border line with the Epic!!

We have experienced with the Movi, and looking forward to just really one or two of the B. Gimbals in current designs... Power must be off the main weight load... So forget the dual module, and just either find a way to attach the V-Lock/AB mount on the top or back part of the rig... Just a suggestion of course... ;)

Usually we use a V-Lock/AB mount battery on the belt with the standard 4 pin xlr connector as power supply for the Portaheads. There are 3 lemo output connectors to power camera and accessories at the housing for electronics so you might power the Red from there as well. We also did tests with an lightweight v-lock mounted to the side or the red handle with redvolt batteries. The heaviest setup so far was the Scarlet with the new Sigma/GL Optics 1,8/18-35 mm lens and a lightweight v-lock batterie mounted to the side. Probably there was about 5,5 kg of weight on the camera tray but I have the feeling there is some room for more weight. The attached photo was made with two 5208 motors for tilt but we also tested the same setup with one 8017 motor on tilt, which is now the current setup.

There is also the possibility to use a adapter cable for Lipo batteries to our power connetor (4 pin xlr) so that a lightweight onboard battery can be used instead of the battery belt.

David Ellison said:
Some of the motors are pretty well exposed.

The 8017 look quite exposed to outside forces like rain and dust, David. On the other hand you can clearly see if they are polluted compared to other motors with closed casing. There is always a small gap between the motor covers so that rain and dust might get inside, regardless if you use a motor with closed covers like the GB85.

The GB85 looks nicer, though and I want to test them again. My first tests with them showed inferior stabilization results on tilt compared to the 8017. Irrespective from the type, all brushless motors do use varnished copper wire so they are not that exposed to humidity as it seems.

Andreas

This week I used the Porta Head 5 for the first time with the cablecam and the brushless system brought another improvement into the stabilization together with the kenyon gyro I used before.
A short video with making of material and footage will follow soon.

whats the cost?

Thanks so much. In the market and this seems like a good option

Thank you for your interest. The Porta Head 5 as handheld system or with multicopter mount costs either 5.500 Euro.
The cablecam system is offered as supply of service together with equipment and 2 operators.

Best regards,
Andreas
