  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Point of weapon? Full Frame?

There's a good chance that it's dragon inside weapon with electronics enhancements that give the sensor a performance boost, but then again it might be 8 months from now and tech moves fast!

The waifer is not that much bigger and maybe weapon has a larger sensor box. OLPF will carry over so there is not reason to think it's much larger, but who knows!

speculating generally is a piss off, but it can be fun, in a treasure hunt kind of way.

Not only that, it would enable the camera to be weather sealed, imagine not having to worry about rain.
 
I remember Jarred and the guys saying Dragon in Epic body is just a part of what the tech is actually capable of. I guess Weapon is the way of Dragon saying "This is not even my final form..."

All this speculation is interesting...The weapon everyone is dreaming up is QUITE a camera!

However I`d rather Jarred announce the camera specs and reduce the disappointment when the camera has 5% of the functions everyone is talking about.
 
Jarred's previously said Weapon will be a continuation of Red's cycle of body -> sensor -> body -> sensor. So like going from R1 MX to Epic - this is the kind of step we need to be anticipating.
 
I think that, for Jim to be back to the forums, we will be seeing much, much more than a simple rehousing of the Dragon sensor and ergonomic changes. Its been stated that there will be different models of Weapon. I sense a Dragon Weapon, and probably a new sensor Weapon announced beyond the Carbon Fiber and non Carbon options...

Which also could mean an improvement on the capacity of the camera. The Epic wasn't just an improvement in size and form factor, it also increased the capabilities of the camera, which might be what we will see with Weapon as well.

Yep, exactly.

I wouldn't anticipate internal proxies, as fantastically useful as that would be it doesn't seem to be part of Red's ethos. I'd love to see custom LUTs, better low light, quieter, more SDI, drop HDMI...
 
It's also worth noting that the specs for dragon frame rates didn't happen in the Epic body. They were close, but not what was specified. So, ideally, this body should allow the full frame rates of Dragon because it's specifically designed for it.

However, i'm not too thrilled, that by camera, which was just upgraded is so quick to need another upgrade. I had to wait for the LLO OLPF because of the work I do, so I had to push the upgrade to November of last year.

and Unfortunately, dragon isn't in demand in the Bay Area. I would have been better off sticking with MX for the rental market.

I have just shot for 4 months on 3 projects in the Bay Area with 7 Dragons in total being used. There are 4 productions going on right this second up there shooting on Dragon that I'm not even a part of.
 
Every Dragon shoot I'm on DP / Director's jaws drop regarding DR and IQ.

Incredibly excited about Weapon...

Ok, for clarification. They people I used to rent my MX to, are now renting MX from someone else. Just my specific situation. These people's clients or DP's are specifically asking for MX over dragon. Again, it's nice to hear others are getting some use out of the Dragon.
 
That's crazy, I would never choose MX over dragon, ever. But hey, that's me...

Why would they derp like that? (Price reasons maybe?) Just odd that they wouldn't want the best.

Is it low price or low light they want? With the LLO there's no reason to shoot MX. This is one of the main reasons I need to upgrade, because no one around here want the MX.
 
Dragon has not been in demand in my market. Sure, there are a few that want it, but the majority of clients just don't care, or even want to know, what we're shooting on. Others who do want to shoot RED, just want "RED" and that's as specific as they get. Most all of them care about the image quality and final product. I'm shooting all corporate stuff, but moving to Dragon has brought no increase in anything. More often than not over the past couple years, if someone specifically requests a camera, they want Alexa. I think I shot more Alexa projects in 2014... Whatever.

Those considerations aside, Dragon has been awesome. I love it. Can't wait for Weapon! With the 6K on Dragon, the increased DR, better color science, and all the other goodies, it makes my life easier and I just have more capability and firepower in my arsenal. 2015 is shaping up differently so far. I'm doing a lot of my own thing lately. Won't be shooting anything for other people for the foreseeable future. I kinda like it so far. ;)
 
I think for some it comes down to data rates. 6k has more data requirements than MX. My kit was decent with 4 64gig cards. I have to bump up to a couple 256 just to keep similar record times.
