  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please, help me decide what to do.

no idea where one buys a used One. sorry.

probably not ebay...

maybe put a thread out on this forum... or you could PM a few Red One owners and ask if they know of any for sale, or where to look - I'm sure they wouldn't mind telling you what they know.

Yep.

I'd do the RPP any day, after using them.
Haven't tried the new panchro's though.

Love the old "Speed panchro"s, though. But they are a totally different kind of glass...

check this out... don't know if it's still available
Good find, Paul, thanks. Now I'll need to go through the list and check if all those listed accessories work with Epic/Scarlet. There's a lot of stuff there I probably wouldn't have purchased otherwise, but it's worth a look.

yeah... either way i wouldn't expect to get a Red One body for $17,500 or less though. they are most likely a hot commodity.

a rental house would probably be the best bet for buying just the body, as anyone else selling one at this point is probably getting out of the business or something and is selling everything they've got.

you may just have to take some sand bags to get your deal to work out. it wouldn't hurt to get a head start using the camera and checking out a workflow.

i think that kit looks pretty fair... not a bad deal. i'm pretty sure you could find most of those accessories pretty useful.

That's a good point, hadn't thought of that eventuality. Hmm.

After all the generous advice folks have posted on this thread I think I've narrowed my choices down a bit. It's either find a used One with warranty (and be prepared to pay a bit more than $17,500 for it), pay the transfer fee and enter Stage Two or Three that way... or hope RED lets me pay for an advance order for a Stage Four Epic S35 now, thus providing me with an invoice dated 2009.

The latter option might mean I'd have to wait for a long time for a camera, though. I wouldn't say no to a chance to spend that time getting to grips with a RED camera, so a used RED One is a tempting idea. Choices, choices...

may the force be with you...

haha

but seriously. i hope for the best in your ventures.

Thank you Paul for all your kind and helpful posts.

Hmm. Faster and cheaper versus slower and more expensive... sure makes the RPPs sound more interesting. It would be great to find an objective review of both lenses on the net, but there isn't one, is there?

Not yet.

The RPPs are arguably the better choice for personal use, but the OP appeared to be approaching this from an investment perspective, looking for something to put your money into to reduce his tax liability, with a view to liquidating at some future point and using the funds to acquire a DSMC body.

For that, the Cookes will almost certainly be the better investment.

Without a doubt. However, I will buy any lens to keep & use, not to sell later on. I won't cross the Cookes out just yet, though; I contacted a couple of European companies for quotes on the Cookes. They might be within my budget.

The full lineup (including the 18mm which is over $1K more than the rest) should be just under your budget. Look at the Duclos/Tokina 11-16mm T2.8 zoom as an affordable (3k) wide angle complement.

Excellent info, thank you Karl Gustav.

What an intriguing suggestion! Is it really possible to trade in two RED Ones for one S35 Epic Stage 4 and have some money left over? I don't remember seeing that mentioned, but then again, I haven't read quite all of Mr. Jannard's posts.

It's not, I wrote S35s. Like buy two RedOnes's and trade each one separately for an Epic S35.

Hei Gunleik, thanks for replying!
I can use all those with Epic or Scarlet?

Define "cheap" ;)

Excellent shopping list, thanks!

I think I've seen deanan and Jim saying that the Rocket goes to 5k...
I'll dig into that later today.
For the rest: Yes, for sure.

"Cheap" is ca 1200$

Euphonics comes with another panel that looks great, but like the Scarlet... It's not here yet...

I'm starting to lean towards the EPIC S35 instead of Scarlet FF35, and it would be nice to know for certain the Rocket will be useful with the EPIC.

I found Tangent Wave in a UK webstore for £899 + VAT, which was a very pleasant surprise. It goes on my shopping list.

Is it my imagination, or are Euphonix products for Mac only?
