  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please, help me decide what to do.

Well folks, I had a nice long chat with my accountant. He felt my best option from accounting POV is to buy a new RED ONE right away, then trade it in for Stage Four EPIC S35 when it becomes available.

Thinking out loud here:

Things to verify first
1) Rocket - still useful when EPIC S35 arrives?
2) RED ONE $17,500 trade-in for Stage Four EPIC S35 - fact or wishful thinking?
3) Which R1 accessories work with EPIC S35?

Things to ponder
1) RPPs or a set of slower Cooke Panchros - or Nikon mount only and stick with my selection of Nikkors?
2) Will I be fine with Canopus EDIUS 5 and Premiere CS4 on a fast PC, or do I need to invest in all new hardware (Mac?) and software?
3) RED-DRIVE or RED-RAM? 16GB CF is tiny.
4) Any chance of using SSDs of my own choice?
5) RED LCD and EVF - do I really need both?

Note to self: don't forget to add a RED cap in cart.

1. I asked over @ the rocket forum. No takes. Mail Deanan
2. This is my understanding. Don't take me to court. Mail brent at red.com
3. Mostly all, but check this:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37498

Pondering:
1. I'd have done a test. I guess there are RPPs around you
3. RED RAM, if you can choose.
4. nope
5. Yes, that's the best solution (even though I have lived happily first with only the LCD before the EVF came out, and with the EVF after my LCD broke). But you should really have both. I'd probably wait with the EVF, though, untill the smaller "bomb evf" is out.

First off, my apologies if I posted this in incorrect forum.
Here's the silly part: I need to spend maybe $40K of it before the end of the year - or my equivalent of IRS will take a large portion of it. I won't bore you with grisly details of our progressive taxation; suffice it to say that all money I don't spend on buying tools for my company is counted as salary paid to me, thus raising the percentage of my income tax.

Some of you might think, "Easy, buy a nice car!". Nope, can't do that, unfortunately. I can own a car, but my company can't. (Don't ask.)

I can help you spend that $40K. Buy an underwater housing from me. :-) biggrin:

Order an epic housing now, we'll ship you an R1 housing now and when Epic comes in keep the R1 body (endplates are the same) and you will be covered for both.

But seriously get the R1 or think about partnering with someone on an R1 if the R1 decision is difficult, and try to keep the bulk of it in things that will hold up over time, like lenses, Pro LCD, MacPro Computer, lighting, etc.

Buy accessories. Lenses, and camera support will quickly eat up that money and are not in any danger of becoming obsolete. Quality lenses as well as camera and lens support also have excellent resale value. Arri, matte box and follow focus, Ziess, or cooke glass, or maybe even Red glass.

just my two cents :)

i'm not sure that you can buy a new RED One and get the trade in... i was pretty sure the cut-off was the 29th of October for eligibility. (edit: apparently not the case!)

i would say that the RED Rocket™™ would be useful.

i would be careful about the R1 accessories. i think many of them work, and will work - however i would assume the new upgraded ones to work better. for example - i wouldn't get an lcd or evf yet. or batteries. storage should be legit. like others have said... equipment that hasn't changed much and won't is probably the way to go. lenses are solid. rigs are solid. lights are solid. hdmi's are probably perfect for the red. computer hardware and/or software wouldn't hurt anything - unless you just don't need it.

i still recommend the used R1 route if possible - so you can get the trade in value - and possibly hold on to some working accessories.

Thank you Gunleik, Michael and Yaque!

I have now made a decision. Unfortunately I'm forced to scale down my budget somewhat, as one of my two employers announced today that he will not pay the bills I sent for the last four months of work I've done for his company. Boom, there go the RPPs off my shopping list. Actually, there goes RED ROCKET as well. Damn.

Now, who's the go-to guy (or gal) at RED I can contact about current stock situation wrt RED ONE bodies and accessories?

Got a reply from Marco @ RED. He told me I would be eligible for trade-in at Stage Four of EPIC S35, i.e. the Brain only, if I bought a new R1 now. It is actually mentioned in Mr. Jannard's announcement thread (see post #17); I've just managed to skip over that part every time.

hmm, guess i shouldn't be so sure then... thanks! haha

i'd say go for it then! did you check into any used ones? i still think that's a good route. you get in line and you get some bonus accessories for the epic!

pretty sure that's fraud. sorry.

i'm not making any judgments - i'd be happy to hold on to it. haha. but seriously - i think that's illegal.

OK, here's my current shopping list. Please let me know if I'm forgetting something essential. Also please note it's more than likely I will never shoot anything commercial with this kit. I will use this set to learn the workflow and to study the RED ideology, so to speak, and will trade it in once Stage Four EPIC S35 kicks in.

1 x RED ONE body
1 x Nikon lens mount
1 x RED Pro LCD 7"
1 x Base Production Pack
1 x RED Rocket
1 x RED Charger
1 x RED Brick
1 x RED-DRIVE
1 x Drive Cable
1 x DC Power Cable

If someone knows a good reason why I should steer clear of the RED-DRIVE, speak now or forever hold your tongue :tongue_smilie:

I left out EVF on purpose; I'm waiting for the Bomb. I'm also trying not to buy anything that is not compatible with EPIC S35. RED Rocket is still a bit of a question mark in that respect.

Comments, please, dear friends.

You know that accounting was once considered one of the fine arts?

OTOH - unless you have a very good auditor that you trust 100%, I think this is good advice...

You want at least two bricks. I'd say 4 with two chargers as a starting point.

I would have taken an arri base-plate + rods in hinsight.

I would definitely have taken the belt clip.
That's a nice thing to have for anything handheld.

Sorta...

I have now made a decision. Unfortunately I'm forced to scale down my budget somewhat, as one of my two employers announced today that he will not pay the bills I sent for the last four months of work I've done for his company.

So, do you think they will pay you eventually, or never? Because IF it's possible that they'll be able to pay your bills next year, you'd be off the hook: as far as i understand they would then be part of next year's bookkeeping/taxes, and you'd have a year to decide where to spend the dough?

You could spend your current money for accessories, lenses, lights, support etc. and spend the money you get next year on Scarlet.

That might work with the other client too - ask them if they'd be willing to move the payment over to next year - who knows, it might be possible (depending on client of course).

PS: nice to see a fellow Finn here!

sounds really good, petri my boy.

EDIT!

Don't forget the metal buzzsaw!!!!!!!!!

i would be careful about the R1 accessories.
Indeed, Paul. If you look at my shopping list, you'll notice it's pared down to minimum. Marco @ RED said this about accessories: "All batteries, LCD's, Digital Media, EVF will be compatible with the EPIC, anything else is not completely determined at this time."

That's why I decided to put the 7" LCD Pro on the list.

i still recommend the used R1 route if possible - so you can get the trade in value - and possibly hold on to some working accessories.
I considered it, I really did. I think my decision to go with a new one is subconsciously based on all the bad experiences I've had with buying used equipment. I would love all the cool freebies that come with EPIC-X, but getting there from here is very likely too much of an effort for me at the moment. I'm pretty dazed and worn out by all the arguing that took place earlier today, as you can probably imagine.

Might want to consider adding an Element Technica shock mount for the RED drive to eliminate dropouts from vibration under some conditions.

i can respect that. i've had similar hassles in the past that i would have given everything in the world just to avoid. that's the point where it's just not worth it...

remember, however, we are talking about the RED community.
