  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Playback for EPIC...

Why is it more difficult than with the RED ONE? Just curious!

Ha. I was about to chime in with "What?! These shipping cameras can't even play back yet?" Then I thought about it for a second and realized that we rarely, if ever, play the footage back from the camera when on set. So, great that RED is continuing to work on this and make it happen and VERY HAPPY that they aren't waiting on it before shipping cameras.

Some times big deals really aren't that big in real, day to day use. (May be for others...just not for me.)

How about a clip on playback module then ...?

They've already come on Reduser and said that a playback module was not going to be something they would require us to buy. Kinda goes against their whole belief system of not charging for features that should come standard like some other companies do.

We never had playback with Film cameras, and we still worked around it in different ways. So It's cool but I don't think is the biggest deal. Playback is necessary but it does not matter where is coming from.
The easy way is to have a card reader plugged to a laptop. Done. It will take 2 minutes to set up.

I don't think it's as easy as just working in reverse. Actually I'm pretty sure by reversing the data flow you would create a 4K photon reversal that would turn your Epic into a laser canon.

Whatever you do, don't cross the streams.

A lazer canon module would be a top seller. I for one would feel much better on remote wildlife shoots, if push came to shove the crew wouldn't starve... And think about lighting... Can anyone say burning bush, not to mention all the hours it would spare in afterEffects.

and again with 720P?

Sorry Adam. Whats with the 720P. you must have a reason. Love to know your thoughts...

I need my IDX cam wave to work with my steadicam and I dont really want to buy a down converter and hang more gear off my rig. Also alot of gear (older) does not accept 1080/25P only 1080/25PSF so
the 720P is a great work around on set. Especially like the panasonic P2 clamshell.

Directors want to look at HD not composite so 720 is a very happy medium for all. I would however much prefer to have 1080psf but RED have made is very clear that they no longer support that format anymore.

If the sun is setting, why are you checking shots on the same device that should be shooting :)
Here here. With digital there are few excuses for not knowing a shot is technically stuffed up. After the heli powers up I record a test and check back to ensure that everything is working.
In 28 years of shooting with electronic cameras I've yet to have a reshoot for technical reasons :) because I check the system before we roll for real, so it is very efficient to be able to play back directly from the camera immediately before we roll (apart form 4K cameras where ascertain resolution is tricky on a 1080 output.) This methodology is best suited to small crews where the DP is operating as it is conducted without fuss.

We believe & We can wait...

thanks to update Maestro...

Thinking about the current LCDs that RED is offering, The 5" and 7" - they both offer a resolution of 1024 x 600.
The video portion takes up to 1024 x 540 when shooting at 5K FF (5120 x 2700).
So, it's only reasonable to assume that RED is looking at a way to allow playback on camera at 25x reduction or more.

It takes some serious processing horsepower, large memory buffer and a fast read speed from the on-board SSDs, in order to achieve that.

Also, I don't think that those LCDs can output 10-bit per color, so they are most probably 8-bit/color.
This means that RED also needs to reduce the color depth from 16-bit in real time.

There's also the Bomb EVF to consider:
It allows a video window of up to 1280x720p@60fps@10bit capability.
It's much better for checking video footage on camera thanks to the higher res, but it also means that the camera's internals need to work harder in order to output such a video stream.

Graeme must be working hard on his math right now.

Anyone know the specs on the touchscreens? It says "Coming Soon" on the product page.

I'm one of those crazy directors that shoots all my own work... Because I can. I'm not talking little crap either. Some of my TVC budgets are bigger then most Indi films.

What I have to stress here is everyone runs there shoots differently and has different on set play back / video requirements. Mine different to you and vise versa. So lets not get into who is right and who is wrong..

For me...
I want to know, there an then... do I have the shot, is the angle good, is the focus good, is the action good... I want to make a snap decision. Do I do it again or do I move on...

I don't have to land and walk over to some director drinking a hot chocolate getting his back rubbed by the wardrobe chick. I don't need to answer producers or suck client dick...
I don't have to ask a director/producer or client.. what do they think and the say, sorry I wasn't watching, can you replay it.. again & again % again for me.
And so the dance continues...

Like yourself, I never have had technical issues with any shot I've done... But I do want to know in seconds, that I have the shot action exactly as I wanted it.. with as little fuss and bullshit possible.

So for all you guys that don't want or don't think the EPIC needs Playback... Then don't use it. I however will in fact embrace it with open arms and probably shoot another 25% more per day, due to not having to race back to video village to make a decisions.

This is one of those scenarios we shot in New Zealand at 14,000feet hand held. I played back in camera 2 seconds later (@120fps) and said Thats a wrap. Lets go home.
