Playback has proven to be exceptionally difficult. More than you could imagine. We are late. Something we were trying never to be anymore...

This is much more difficult a trick than anyone had expected, but we did have a breakthrough over the weekend. No one wants this to be delivered more than we do.

While I can't offer a date at this point, I know we are "sooner rather than later".

We understand the frustration about this because we share it. The complexity of the code surrounding the single most comprehensive and complicated camera ever made has made this quite a challenge. The only thing I can say is that it will get done. The RED Army is focused on it.

Please be patient. It won't be much longer...

We believe.

Cool. We all know you are working yourselves silly to make the best camera ever even better.

Thank you for the update.

No worries, thanks for the update. I would consider the playback as a "nice to have" rather than "must have" feature.
I know you guys are working hard and it will be done, so not losing sleep over this :)

I hope the new playback system will be much better then the sluggish red one playback system

it took ARRI quite a while before they implemented playback

A breakthrough is intriguing.

In the scenarios I see myself in (mostly commercial), playback is not necessary until the shot is complete and camera is being set up for the next shot. This gives the DIT plenty of time to transfer and load files in RCX-Pro. I haven't had an urgency to playback footage right after it's shot. So it'll be a nice add-on when it's available!

Nerves of steele.

At least that level of uncertainty is now put to bed; sounds great!

and they had allot of space for boards in there camera, and play back a Low res compressed ProRes vs tiny body RAW playback

interesting question spike
will it be a full res debater playback or 1/2 ... 1/4

Maybe or maybe not directly relevant to Epic…

But… for a 645 DSMC, that would be a really good feature as you could throw stuff away as you are shooting and zone in on really short sequences and frames that you would want to keep.

Perhaps??

Mr. Jannard,
Do you mean playing back footage in camera?
This hasn't been available up until now?

I always thought that the camera than can record the footage, can also play it back.
But logically, with 5K and 4K footage, it does seem to require a really fast processor.

I don't think it's as easy as just working in reverse. Actually I'm pretty sure by reversing the data flow you would create a 4K photon reversal that would turn your Epic into a laser canon.

Thanks Jim, no doubt you guys will make it happen soon.

Thanks for the update Jim!

Having shot film for years, it's not critical. But when you want to confirm a last take is good before you break a setup, it is a great feature to have. Plus, when you're shooting solo in DSMC mode, you have no other way to confirm you got what you needed. I would assume playback would be nothing larger than an HD sized frame out of camera, and that would be fine. If we need to see full sensor, go the the DMT cart....
