Jim, no, I'm not. And I'm referring strictly to the sail shot I was referring to earlier, not a big deal at all. I was just curious to see if anyone else had noticed that, and I didn't play the trailer back and forth hundreds of times to see that, it "struck" me the first time. As I wrote before, I loved the trailer, I loved the cinematography in it, and I'm quite a big fan of Wolski's work, so I'm absolutely sure I'm going to like this movie, just like I liked the previous three.

Apparently Wolski doesn't believe that his work on Pirates looks "video-y" as he has chosen RED for his next job with Ridley Scott... why not see it on the big screen before passing judgment on one scene?

If you step through the shot of the sail frame by frame - you can see that it has been "time remapped" in post production (if you know what to look for). Something they do all day long when editing trailers. That has nothing to do with shooting on RED. The same artifact would be seen if you shot on film. I think it's a great shot - I sincerely doubt 99% of the world will notice the frame blending. There is a small chance I am wrong here - and I'm seeing compression artifacts - but looks like a little time remap to me.

Jim, I don't understand why a single comment about less than a second of footage seen on a trailer shouldn't make any sense at all. I also said that I'd love to see it (the trailer) in a theater, and I probably will when I go to see Tron.
Where did I say the whole thing looks video-y? Where did I say Wolski is an incompetent cinematographer who doesn't know his craft? I think and I've said exactly the contrary earlier in this thread and on the "Ridley Scott" thread as well. I cannot wait to see Pirates 4, as well as whatever those two masters come up with in the near future.

Because I'm not passing judgement at all, and if I did it was way more on the positive side of things, saying that the cinematography in the trailer looks fantastic. I was just wondering why that single "sail shot" looked like that, that's all. I apologize if this is not the right place to ask for such a thing.

Jim -

I think when people say that RED looks "video-y" - it's really about the fact that it has no film grain and everyone is so programmed to see it. A trigger goes off in their minds when they are watching grain - "I'm watching film".

Since many of the shot on RED films were released on 35mm film - you get the film grain when you shoot out to 35mm. When people see these 3D trailers - or trailers and films shot on RED projected digitally - I think people sometimes have a reaction to the super-clean, sharp image.

I personally can't stand to watch 35mm prints anymore - unless it's a classic film from decades gone by. And even then - I'd rather watch a 4K remastered version projected digitally.

Thanks, Mark. I was just about to write that it looked like that specific shot had been slowed-down in post.

That has nothing to do with shooting on RED.

I never said or even thought anything like that. If it had been shot in 65mm I would've asked the same thing.

Sorry... I think the trailer looks incredible. We are very proud of it. If the same scrutiny was held to ALL film projects, you could find the same type of things to point to. But there is no forum for that...

Saw the trailer last night and I was pretty underwhelmed by it; not something to do with the fact that it was shot on RED. Visually it looked stunning, but it looks a lot like something they whipped together quite fast. I'm sure we'll see a great one, that is edited and graded better - soon.

Pirates is released from MX.
Social network grossed a bit of cash.
The Stig Larson trilogy is shot on RED (R1 MX for now, it seems)
Spiderman is shot on Epic.
The Hobbit will be shot on Epic.

And just silly old me am involved with a total of 5 TV series in different stages from planningto release, shot on Red 1M, R1MX and Epic for next fall + a feature and some shorts...

RED has proven itself over and over again. I would hope the discussions could go in different directions foreward....

Of course stuff can happen to RED footy, too... But that's a totally different discussion.

The natives can stay calm and produce for now.

and you should very well be. For someone who dreamed and went on to build a camera that didn't even exist when the last "pirates" came out, it's a HUGE accomplishment.

If the same scrutiny was held to ALL film projects, you could find the same type of things to point to.

Absolutely. Once again, I don't know why you thought I was referring to a "problem" with Red. I apologize if my tiny little comment was seen as something different from what it actually was.

Couldn't put my finger on it at first but then noticed there was a very slight RGB "afterglow" (for the lack of a better word) - similar to what you'd see in the EVF when quickly moving your eyes from one side to the other. I think the projector might have been slightly off or something, giving (all) the trailers a very digital look.

If it helps, i get very sensitive when people criticize my work as well. It's like someone saying "hey your baby looks kinda ugly" It's just not fun.

Very true. I was also quite amazed by how great and consistent it looks, considering there's almost everything in the trailer: interiors, exteriors, daylight, night scenes, harsh & diffused, jungles, ships, water, it could be easily be used as a promo reel to show what RedMX is capable of in the right hands!

p.s. every time I watch it on my mac, I cannot help but smile at seeing Depp's Jack Sparrow..May can't come soon enough...
