Pirates of the Caribbean 4

A big advantage in shooting a film like this digitally(besides the 3D) is not having to ship film off for development, from these remote locations.

the images look rich, lots of details, very nice look ...
so, just enjoy the show. i love the pirates - movies.

When the sail opens 16 sec in the trailer, it has that strobing/smearing digital look. You have to see it in motion.

I´d vote for slightly longer shutter speeds (or post motion blur, but I doubt this as I think it would have been left out from 2D version) to make the 3D viewing experience more pleasant, as 24fps is not ideal for 3D viewing. Having done/seen some tests of longer shutter times on 3D it actually helps the jitter a little bit and is not as annoying as in 2D. Anyone involved in the production to give more insight?

And I hope that everyone here realizes that when we judge the image quality from Quicktime trailer from our home/office computer monitors, none of us sees the actual image nor the image of the finished movie ;)

Ok only seen the trailer on computer! but it looks great, the feel is right and your drawn in. Rather see digital projection in my local cinema any day than a film print that's on its last legs. Digital is pristine every time.

I don't know if it was just me or what but the only thing I saw that irked me a bit was that it looked like they went 1/24 shutter in some scenes, thus giving that smooth video motion look that some certain Genesis-filmed films used to combat low light situations. Hate that, even though I myself have had to resort to that on some Canon HV20 shoots years ago.

Worst example was Public Enemies. I left the theatre shaking my head. Oh Dante Dante my hero! Just say no to the 360 shutter!

Careful examination indicates the sail is likely CGI. Either time re-mapped or some overzealous motion blur applied to a cloth simulation. That's a lot of heavy canvas to billow and all I see are luff lines and shrouds on the mizzen - not enough wind. Ships of the period are unfurled at the yard and I didn't see any hands aloft. The Mizzen Topsail yard doesn't even have a sheet on it - so this is likely shot pre-rigging. The main sheet has no tells and she bunches on lines that aren't there. The shadows on the mizzen mast are static- not dynamic and the specular highlight from the sun is static as well. Now that the illusion is ruined, at least we know its not the camera's fault.

Jeff has been waiting for more than 1,100 posts to be able to unfurl this bit of knowledge.

Aye, Matey! I've been trying to steer discussions towards this for months, with no takers.

I know how it sounds, but its an occupational hazard I'm afraid. You gotta know it to draw it. I spent two years learning the ropes, so to speak. Next up: spy satellites, murder victim disposal and cake decorating... and I'm not kidding on any of them.

Aesthetic choice. After spending few days with him on a workshop it was hard not to respect it.

It may make a difference perceiving the story through the look which is used, not through the one which is not. :)

Perfect. :)

Tron or the Trailer? :P

Both. Really.

On the other hand there was a long borring introducktion by James Cameron to a trailer for this new film that 'litteraly used the same cameras as Avatar' which looked worse than any of the other trailers. One thing for sure, if Avatar hadn't had so much CGI in it, the 3D effect wouldn't have looked any good.

There was no Pirates 4 trailer in front my Tron IMAX show. Have they added it? I am going to see it again in IMAX but I might change up the venue. Anyone seen it at the Irvine Spectrum in Cali?
