  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

I have to imagine that RED's Vista Vision format is basically Full Frame. It's soooo close already. Medium Format glass is really for 65mm, which is another lager format alltogether.

yeah, I'm interested in the max height of the frame and one thing is for sure: the amount of data is gonna be insane ! ;-))) hahahaaaa

Oh yeah, for sure. I'm guessing 8K rez. Even 8KHD will be a lot of data. But FF 8K, ie FULL 4:3 sensor? OMG. Insane data!!!

why would it be ?

digital sensors match the physical dimensions of film formats so that FOV/crop factor etc remains the same with given lenses... there is no difference. it's simply the physical size of the active recording area.

5D is digital FF35 sensor in exact same dimensions as the still film format: 36mmx24mm.

if active area of VV is 36 wide then u can use the format with all FF lenses, otherwise (if larger) u would need to get medium format glass to fully cover...

RED tends to make their sensor formats in slightly larger sizes and "window" to common dimensions such as s35 etc. So I imagine if they did a true VistaVision size, you can window to FF35 and have a lookaround. But that's just a guess based on the past sensors. Obviously we haven't seen any specs yet...

and just a crazy thought... in order to somewhat control that data in terms of size (and more importantly performance on workstations), people will shoot super high res (like 8K on VV) in ProRes and still get the immense (visual) benefit when downsampling to 4K/UHD/2K/HD...

all make sense now adding the ProRes now....... ;-))))

great option until the HDDs and the CPUs have caught up... and then back to RAW... ;-)

the question is what the active recording area of the VV format is... I don't think it's 37.xx mm but I've never personally handled the format... maybe a question for David Mullen ?

yup!!! Prores is going to change RED workflow/perception for sure. I can broadcast shows jumping on it.

It's midnight in LA, you know what the means.

Another from Jarred's Facebook and Instagram. Peter Jackson on the camera.

No ones going to bed anytime soon. :)

well, that one removes pretty much all the mystery.

Gee, I hope that that RedVolt Module at the back is a module, and that my entire investment in Epic rear modules isn't wiped out. Also the cages, screen, side handle and other stuff.
I'm wondering if it might be better to sell off the Dragon package that I have now and rebuild a Weapon-based package from scratch.

Oh yes!!! It's nicely small and hope It's lighter than Epic as well. Fantastic for the Ronin and Movi. Without knowing specs I definitely see the best camera in the world!

Looks like a module adaptor and a redvolt/redvolt xl power unit.

I love the merging of the original redmote and the switchblade on the dumb side and all the connections there as well. (I guessed that one)

AWESOME photo! Hmm. Seems wide with the module. Is that one mic jack beside the headphone jack?

Nope. Professional ta3 mini XLR connectors same as the redone! I still have the audio snake that will plug right into that. Hopefully a mic line level switch in the camera firmware as well.

Yup I just saw that - looks like the switchblade is removable, like a redmote.

This thing is tiny - how do you even put a cage on it?

might not want a dumbside cage with all the controls there. The ac's are going to have a tough time figuring out where to hang stuff of this camera. Frankenrigs are so passé :) keep it clean.
