  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

What about sending either 1 frame in 4 -> or 1/4 of the R3D image over 802.11ac wave1 to an iPad Air 2

If I was a betting man I reckon the Ipad could be persuaded to decode an R3D stream in real-time.

<snip> And wireless video still isn't where it needs to be yet to build it into the camera.. but we have something that lets you use what is available out there as an accessory.

Only for $7.95!

Wish I was joking. That's what this "inner circle" thing looks like.

(Which is great for what's he's offering, but hope the Weapon reveal isn't behind the paywall.)
Woah! They're selling the rights to the reveal? Wonder if the networks were allowed to bid?

I understand all the discussion about "trade-ins" and retaining legacy Accessories. We have all spent a lot of money of modules and media and 3rd party designs. I am sure Jarred and Brent and team have thought long and hard. But what is important is that this new camera's design (inside and out) is the best those mad scientists (Graeme!) can come up with and that they should not hurt that design by trying to make all the legacy parts work.

Epic was a huge departure from the Red One design and thank God for that. Let RED give the best of what they've got and not be overly concerned about the past. Yes obsolescence Obsolete but that is what we get with the trade in deals....

Please do not make Jarred feel bad for not having to reverse engineer..... Otherwise it will be a Radio Shack bread board and Arri will continue unfettered.

Hi Peter

You make a good point and I was, and surely many others are as well, being short sighted in wanting the modules and media we have to work...

BUT PLEASE RED GET THE BODY REALLY RIGHT THIS TIME. Not just workable and cool... If they do that I will through my side handles, media and never used Pro I/O modules in the bin with delight!

Red 1 - fantastic radical wake call to the industry and the amazing innovation of red code and 4k for peanuts but INSIDE a ergonomic mild disaster, lens height too high with some dreadfull 1st Gen accessories

EPIC - amazing feet of wizardry making a cinema camera so small BUT too much was left out becuase the modules where too slow coming out and often not quite good enough it stayed a bit limited... Also why did we need a module to put on a module?

So if this new body is really carefully thought out (I hope Stephen P and Hector have been involved and working hard) I am in!

I love red innovation but I need to mixed with film set wisdom and practical thinking .. I don't just want a cool camera I want 'the camera'

Please Red don't rush. Please get it right! Also If you could then make a comitment to keeping the new shape form factor for a given period of time say 3year that would satisfy me completely..That helps everyone invest and keep confidence

Thanks Peter and let's hope your right

Michael

Looks like they are going the ALEXA route! Very sweet.

Right, and Jarred said No to wireless... That leads us back to the question ; What the hell is that?

You get the camera permanently wired into your brain. No detachable connectors used.

I believe this was an early prototype.

Unfortunately that is not the reality we live in. If something goes wrong with a recording, Producers / Directors / People that bought the "3rd party" media that don't want to get in trouble will blame the camera FIRST. We have seen this a thousand times before with random 3rd party gear. It is one of the reasons I detest the cheap D-taps so much... you know, the ones that you can plug in backwards and blow shit up with. I can't tell you how many times over the years D-tap was inserted backwards and it blew something up and we received angry calls from whoever telling us we need to replace their monitors etc.

So yeah.. we take media very very seriously. One bad write could literally ruin a literal million dollar shot or at least one that felt like a million dollar shot. It's just not worth the risk.

Regardless... I know the whole Big Mag to Mini Mag is a jump some people are having problems with even though I have been warning about it for a year. To make things easier, we are working out a special deal for those that have REDMAGS already and need to switch to MINIMAGS. It is not a trade-in thing, but more of a one time discount when you jump over to make things a little less painful... based on the number of the big cards you have. So if you have 6 big cards, you can buy up to 6 minimags at a reduced price, only at the time you switch over. Fair?

We are not trying to screw you guys here.. With technology some things just can't live forever.

Hi Jarred,

Two questions:
1. I recently picked up (4) additional REDMAGS from other REDUSERS. Will you honor the reduced price for minimags based on all REDMAGS owned (showing valid serial numbers and bill of sale), but not purchased directly from RED?

2. Any word on RED ROCKET-X compatibility with the Weapon.

Thanks,
Eli

Comparing the '2' button on the right to the current mini-mag SSD module, this looks like a completely different side SSD module. Also, if the logo emblem stays the same size, this camera is shorter, hence why the side module redesign and reason for smaller minimags.

Wondering if the rear SSD module (1.8") will work with this camera if some of the rear modules are compatible?

That is one thing we are carrying forward ( because we can ) ... There will be an adapter to make current LEMO monitoring/touchscreen options work with Weapon.

Yes! So I can keep my 5 touch and my Canon mount. What else??? Do Tell!! I am seriously rooting for my side handle- its not the most expensive accessory I have but its the one I like the most: fits perfectly in my hand, sturdy, love the display and its well built, intuitive. Please do keep the side handle, or if you're coming with something new, do something similar, its just brilliant!

Hi Jarred,

When will we have some more details regarding the REDMAG "discount?" I've been putting off the upgrade for a while, but it's starting to feel like the right time as we get closer to Weapon. Thanks.

In another thread Jarred indicated that the existing 14pin RED LEMO LCD/EVF standard can be accommodated on the Weapon via a LEMO adapter of some kind. Perhaps similar to the power crossover cable for the RedOne to Epic transition - but a bit smaller I hope ;-)

Good on RED for keeping the investment in their monitoring solutions alive through several iterations of the platform.

Cheers - #19

ya I saw that. Was just hoping there might be an upgrade, another cable or adapter just adds a possible fault point however unlikely.

Discount on monitoring options, duh! ;)

Why would anyone think this is about revealing info about the new Weapon?

Come on people...... Jarred has a method......

Granted. Weapon brain is actually almost half an inch shorter than the Epic brain, and when you add the modules there is no adapter needed and things get much more compact ( the base IO for example only adds 3/8" of an inch to the body ) For super compact setups, where you may not even need the base IO, just the battery module, you can skip the IO module completely.
Will the current quick plate module work on weapon?

Thinking about it more it'll probably just be a different cable, old LCD lemo on one end and new connector on the other, so either way there's a cable as always, I don't see this being an issue. Other than some people might have a ton of extra cables…which they will need to sell.
