Had a second to go through some of my notes and pictures. I've got a few more shots of the Red Quickplate/Backpack System for those interested in it. It's actually pretty exciting.

We already know it does this, which is a simple and quick way to attach a battery or cheese plate for accessories. (That's Ted in the OOF giving an interview)

However check out the (what I'm calling) Half Quickplate/Backpack in conjunction with this Shoulder Pad:

Matt stated that the shape and final material of the shoulder pad will likely change, but it's already pretty close and extremely lightweight. Meaning for those who want to pack tidy you can have a quick shoulder setup that you just toss in your case or bag. Pretty neat.

The Half Quickplate/Backpack is also pretty neat. I can see lots of possibilities like mounting your battery on top of your brain or top plate and still having access to connecting your Redmote or even modules.

Something I'd really like to say, for those who weren't at NAB, Red did a stellar job with the massive booth and presenting info to attendees and media. Really nice job to the goes demoing and doing the interviews. I can't fathom the condition of your voices at this moment, but it's much appreciated. Thanks for taking time to field my questions and everybody else's as well.

Hanging with you, Paul, Jeff, and getting to meet several other Redusers like Joseph and Rick was a big highlight for me. Nice to run into papa Tonaci, Justin, and reunite with Big Lu.

One day we'll have to have to have that drink and shoot the breeze about composition and color theory.

Great to chat with you as well Phil. ODEMAX!

Hey Phil, nice talking to you too at Nab, especially concerning your musings on the red motion mount. Not sure how much you were able to wander about, but the "buzz" was about practicals, trying to drop vfx shots by half, actor emmersion, and daily reviews where you can really tell if you have the money shots.

Anyway if i could simplify all this to 2013/2014 being the year of the practicals for films above 40 mill - RED COMPLETELY NAILED IT. The line up your describing is about exactly what one needs to shoot practicals (remote systems under motion control, remote camera management, global shutter, remote nd commands (needed to keep low t stop so the practicals stay a bit blurry). I really think a lot of DP's will be happy with this balance between practicals and vfx, without fighting with the executive producers. I can see a decked out red dragon with MEIZLER, lens controls and nd/globalshutter as being the package to go for as DP's are testing for their spec. About the only thing I heard in the buzz that I'm not sure I heard mentioned in the RED announcements was ethernet control of the camera's (all the announcements seemed to be wireless). Seemed to me, with the practicals, the DP stations can be over 100 feet from the camera (i heard a couple of people mentioning they really wanted 10g DIT networks, but that was a want not a requirement).

Heh. I think any size production can benefit from more efficient workflows on set no matter what the budget. Wireless is one of those "yeah we should do that" things. I've been on one too many productions where moving video village was an ordeal that you had to through a good amount of bodies at to get it done. Although modern video carts/guys on set are pretty mobile these days. Wireless feeds though speed everything up and also help keep weird things like tripping on cables happening. Also, you can do crazy things with a camera you're aren't tethered to.

Red seems to be putting together a sort of "production ninja" system with Meizler, REDsync, Motion Mount, and other coming accessories/modules. It's sort of the thing that other companies aren't really tackling. At least not with this much vigor.

Phil, thank you for your take on glass for 6K. I'll have to look into the Schneider FF. Until then I will try to expand on my Leica R collection. And of course I still have Canon EF glass with the corresponding mount for lightweight shoots.

And thank you for the NAB reports, much appreciated!

Thanks Phil, as ever greatly appreciate your thoughts and insight. Keep hearing good things about NILA. Look forward to hearing how you get on when you test more extensively.

Best Wishes

Lliam

This is why the Element Technica purchase is so smart. They make solid stuff and combined with everything Red's invented there's bound to be even more camera porn.

Finally!!! The REDVOLT XL Quickplate Battery Adapter
This will be awesome for run and gun light setups. Reminds me of my Hassy H1

AND you can fly with them :)

Bummer it's only for V-mount :(

Gabriel's taking about this Bob:

REDVOLT XL via cable right into the back of the brain. With the Quickplate and upcoming Quickplate Half you can mount this thing anywhere.

Why does it need a cable to the brain? The other two REDVOLT battery module's don't require a cable.[/QUOTE]

This is a different type of device. It attached to the Quickplate system or can be bolted anywhere on the body. A bit more flexible than purely attaching to the brain.

And since there are already a couple good options that attach directly to the brain for REDVOLTS and the XLs, I think Red has that concept already well covered.

is there hope that power management will be improved with dragon?or that dragon draws less power? regardless this looks like a perfect companion to redvolts in the side handle...

It has been mentioned that Dragon runs more efficiently than the Mysterium-X sensor. That can be due to the sensor itself or combination of the new components in there. Additionally Red has also mentioned that they are constantly tweaking power management.

Don't expect getting 4 hours out the normal Redvolts though. It might add a couple minutes here and there.

Redvolt XLs power the camera for about an hour and half as it stands today. The regular Redvolt is in the range of 25-ish minutes and sometimes longer due to operation technique or temperature.

not sure i like the cable either but this solution looks a lot better then the HUGE quad batt module or the (probably still bigger then this) dual batt module.....i do understand the reason for putting the batteries on the side with those, to keep the modularity of the system intact but i much prefer this....a cable would not be very elegant but if it keeps the price down, i am all for it....

i don't get 25 min out of my redvolts...more like 15 and then i have to start worrying about the swap....which is why this looks great to me, run the XL down and keep a redvolt in the sidegrip for power during the swap....

I would say most Red shooters I come across that use V-Mount or Gold Mount have some sort of "cable" tethered solution. Good if you have to go to shoulder, steadicam, jib, etc.... I've never looked at it as a negative. There's a lot of options now and the modular concept is key. The Quad Redvolt Module isn't that long to me and I see in the rigging threads a lot of folks who have mounted shoulder braces right under there. I guess to each their own. There is the Dual that's a bit shorter. Just depends on what your needs are.

That's interesting. I have 4 and I timed about 26 minutes with EF glass and the 5.0" LCD Touch. No auto focus enabled though. Do you have additional accessories attached that could draw power? This was as recently as the 4.0 builds in the firmware.

I'm thinking about adding some XLs (don't currently have them) to my kit for flight/travel use. I'm normally using larger and heavier V-Mounts locally. Gotta go to London at the end of May for a heartbeat. Might do something more travel friendly.
