  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Phil's NAB Journal 2013

Q: Will Scarlet Dragon have any 6K functionality?
A: Nope. Scarlet Dragon records at 5K at up to 60 frames per second.

Q: There were talks about a 5.5K resolution on Dragon to essentially be a similar size to the Mysterium-X's full sensor size.
A: In progress. Also, Red is investigating on how to allow the shooter to set their own custom resolutions.

Q: Will Dragon have HDRx or not?
A: Looks like it will be in there as of 1:43am 4/10/2013.

Q: In the Dragon cameras or upgraded cameras do we get the new DSMC FAN 2.0?
A: Nope. That is an optional upgrade for those who desire it.

Thanks Phil for asking those questions and your great NAB report !

Jarred just confirmed HDRx will stay in Dragon (after a quick RU poll)... oops you updated it before I hit the quote button...

sleep well !

Phil, if it weren't for you, I must say this NAB would have been pretty low on reports. This is so informative, feels thorough and a great read text wise. Great job! I'm truly thankful!

Hi Phil, any chance you can stop by the Editing platforms and find out if there are any developments on the 4k finishing solutions? I know BM has added online support to resolve 10, but how is Avid, Smoke and others coming? Please let Avid know that us 4k people feel really left out.

Thanks!

Thanks Phil,
Lot's of great info.
I am very curious about the new Follow Focus from Element Technica.
Gearing? Release date? Price?
Any further info on it?

Thanks for these great posts, Phil!!!!
Cheers

Great report Phil. I especially like the pictures not taken with iPhone simplicity. After all, we are a visual group of individuals and quality counts. All the little Red developments that did not make the initial announcements was surprising info. I did not realize we were missing so much by not attending. Thanks for helping us participate in NAB through your eyes and thoughts.

This is the place to find Red coverage without having to jump from thread to thread. Especially glad you gave us some ODEMAX insight as, perhaps like you, I think over time this may become the most important thing for Redusers in 2013.

Thanks for doing this Phil.

The Odemax guys were publicly showing all the interfaces, and they were working. They have the interface for the media owner/indie, interfaces for the theaters(including theater automation), and normal user interface - so it is all there. I think they are just so busy coding that they don't have much time for marketing, but that will change soon. As you were saying Elsie, the system is a dream for indies.

Whole thing is based on ".RED" conversion, so I see that as the critical component that I haven't seen much info on. Since I will be coming from a 2k DI, I did ask about how the support is on that ... A 4k up convert might be a smart thing to do and have very little additional size(but 2k support is in there too).

Thanks everybody. Really glad I could "bring you to the show".

Thanks Phil. Stoked you are doing this thread. If you happen to stop in on any new LED offerings and could find the time to post a couple of words I'd be very grateful.

Lliam, I thought LEDs were everywhere last year, but this year I think I saw 2X what was here a year ago. I'll have to compile my thoughts fully after I get back to LA, but there's a few things to pay careful attention to. Light shape, color temperature, build quality, LED quality, and general design. It's really crazy when you have LED fixture companies next to each other and you can visually see the difference in color temperature, which reveals good and bad things. Build quality was all over the board here, some really "janky" and also industrial strong lights here. With LED panels it's extremely easy to create soft light. However, LED hard light (similar shape and punch to HMI and tungsten fixtures) is a bit harder to do. That's why I'm pretty into what NiLA has to offer.

They impressed me again this year with a new design on their Boxer, similar concept for their Varsa. Both units produce about 15% more light than their previous version. It looks like the SL is getting an overhaul as well in the next couple months. They also showed a new "mini" light, no official name yet. It's a 200 watt HMI replacement and will be priced around $1000 with holographic lenses. Varsa = 400w HMI, Boxer = 800w HMI, SL = 2500w HMI. I'm leaning heavily towards these.

I'm really into LEP lighting as well and there's only two people doing it and one company is mega expensive. HIVE however is pretty competitive and creating 400 watt HMI replacements and their fixtures can be grouped like they have in their Killer light. I took a careful look at their new space light offering. Looks pretty damn good.

I'm going to be doing some intense testing and then purchasing a kit in the next couple months. But, I'm leaning towards LED or LEP for my own lighting needs. I desire low consumption, low temp, daylight balanced light. These two companies have that.

Hey Phil. Just curious which lens did you take your pictures with.

I shot mostly on the Canon 35mm f/1.4L, 50mm f/1.2L, and 85mm f/1.2L. A couple shots in there with the Tokina 11-16mm @ 16mm on a 5D Mark II. Mostly 35mm f/1.4L though.

There was so much at the Red booth and I witnessed even popular tech blogs missing things like the Motion Mount, which blew my mind. Also, the stuff that wasn't formally announced like the Half Quickplate and VESA mount you really had to look out for and ask questions. It was kinda like an easter egg hunt combined with some detective work :) I'm just like you guys when it comes to this. I shoot on Red and my interests are pretty focused on everything they are offering. Dragon, the Motion Mount, Red Motor, all the new accessories, and where in development ODEMAX is really peaked my interests. There's some real new and state of the art tech happening here.

I have to head out to LA in about 1 hour. I saw a few things, but you'll be able to read up on that stuff from the regular culprits. Avid is aware, believe me.

Zilch. It's wicked early in development. I did find out that the FF will have hard stops though. It's got removable knobs and you can plug a whip or crank right into the dumb side of the FF too. Early, but looks promising.

Cheers. I do my best to not share images that don't meet a certain quality standard. Glad you liked them. I felt crazy that first day tweeting the cell phone pictures as I went along, but I made sure to get some nicer shots of stuff that really mattered. I've got a few hundred to go through still of various things from the Red Booth and the rest of NAB, but this is the important stuff for the most part.

Phil, what will be the crop factor of the 5K in the scarlet?

If in relation to a FF35 cropped to the wider aspect ratio of the native Dragon sensor you'll be looking at a 1.41:1 crop factor. It is extremely close to S35 full aperture in width at 5K. If that world is familiar to you and your lens selection you'll feel right at home. For people like me who have that film background this is a great feature of Dragon at 5K. The added benefit is I love FF35 and 6K Dragon is around a 1.18:1 crop factor with the same logic. Very close.

What I'm saying is in relative terms, at least for me and how my human brain sees it: Dragon 5K = S35, Dragon 6K = VistaVision.

Which also means, this is the camera I've been waiting for. REDCODE Raw, 4K delivery, UHD becoming a standard, etc. I really can't tell you how excited I am about getting my hands on this Dragon.

Thanks Phil. Wow I would not have imagined carrying around 4 lenses but I like the shots of the lenses near the end. Thought they were 1.2s

So Phil, what is Skully going to get? ;) Did you make a choice yet?

Leave him as is and get an Epic-Dragon as A-Cam? :)
Upgrade to Scarlet Dragon
Upgrade to Epic-X
Upgrade to Epic-Dragon

If money wouldn't be a thing, I'd upgrade Mathilda to Scarlet Dragon and get an Epic-Dragon A-Cam :)
But since it still is, I'm hesitant between Epic-X and Scarlet-Dragon upgrade...high fps vs. noise and DR...

Do you have a tendency already? Would love to hear your take on this.

This really has been a relief on the eyes. Very well done! It's really nice to look at images where you can actually distinguish between image noise and details on a product ;)
