  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Phil Holland's PhilmColor Creative 3D Luts for IPP2

The most absurd thing I ever heard on here.

Ben, actually it's not! ;)

It would be a win for everyone, Phil could concentrate on doing what he loves without have to deal with orders and such,
RED would offer a nice bonus to customers, and customers would love IPP2 and RED Cameras more in general... ;)

An independent person produces a product which he sells to various people, including members of this forum - And someone is suggesting a company buys out this brand new product just to give it away for free?

It's ludicrous.

Why would anyone involved want to do this? How entitled are people they think this could/should happen so they can have something for free?

Nobody needs a set of free luts, no matter how wonderful they may be, to appreciate IPP2. And certainly nobody that didn't already like Red cameras would be swayed by said luts.

If you have a use for Phil's great work then buy it.

EDIT: I'll shut up about this now because it's a slightly weird tangent for the thread to go down.

Ben: While it might or might not seem completely uncool to Phil, presenting the idea here is by no means ludicrous. This is generally a mutually supportive community of people who tend to welcome envelope-pushing and even outside-the-box approaches.

The precedent has certainly been set, and another poster has listed a few extremely successful examples. In theory, since most of us know nothing about Red's or Phil's inner workings, it might work in everyone's interest for Red to hand Phil a check that represents Red's appreciation for his work and the value he would likely receive over the next five years of license sales. That amount might be worth paying him for the degree of product development they could in turn start to immediately distribute as part of their valuable package, without having had to dedicate internal resources to the project. Phil himself, as someone else suggested, might just be ready to accept such a lump sum and move on to his other projects, or any other imaginable agreement within or without Red.

These were just ideas. If they don't fly, no harm done. If they do, cool. You're as welcome as the rest of us to express your opinions. Please don't shit on people for expressing their novel ideas. Especially on Reduser.net.

No worries and it's a cool suggestion. The LUTs have proven to be pretty popular and I could see "something" happen. We'll just have to see. There are more coming and perhaps licensing a "teaser" pack or something is more ideal, but who knows. Early days.

Right now though and for the foreseeable future this is a toolkit of LUTs that I'll be creating updates for and supporting for some time to come, and probably only released by me.

IPP2 is still in beta, but once it's fully out there in the SDK can all that I'm hoping that there will be even more inspired looks in your hands. I'm working hard on that now and for the next little while. Also working on a million other things :)

But truly guys, I want to say thank you. I had a lot of back and forth early on in this process about releasing "anything", but once I went full on with the concept I truly put a great deal of effort into it.

Thank you all for the early support. The new stuff coming is all things you'll want if you're already digging what philmColor is all about.

Phil these are great! I would love to see you do some more extreme luts, kind of like the lutify me stuff, just to see what you come up with. Do you have a # you want tagged with footage?

I don't think it's a novel idea to suggest someone else buy you a lut pack :)

Anything Phil might cook up with Red is their own business.

But I digress...

Thanks, Phil. These LUTs are fantastic. They're a huge time saver and I can get subtle look changes with IPP2 and not "break" anything which is a tremendous benefit to my work. Nice going, Man

Thank you Hugh and you've hit the nail on the head with the purpose of these. They are designed not to break anything and it's great when you get to see them in SDR and HDR. Crazy we can do this actually with IPP2.

I'm cracking away at the next update in every free moment, which you'll be getting for free, just a few more things to do. I think you guys will like these for sure.

Phil,

Any news on a "DSMC2 Field Ops Guide" with updated IPP2 workflow info or will you just wait on the final IPP2 Implementation?

This entire video was mastered in HDR using PhilColor, great LUTS! Can't wait for 2nd release.

Yep. Likely releasing the IPP2 guide for nothing, but DSMC2 guide is happening.

Yup. You can do it with all RED cameras:

Set your raw settings to Log3G10 and RedWideGamutRGB.

1st node - Philmcolor LUT of your choosing

2nd node - Red IPP2 output LUT of your choosing
