Panavision 8K Camera

Standby for news on friday. It is a good thing all the way around

Is it that RED is going to do a free upgrade for some worthy CF Weapon owner in the 8k queue to the Panavision 8k camera announced today? '-)

Panavision bought RED and will be able to bring down the production cost of the brains therefore lowering the price point making them available for everyone and bringing Jim's new project to fruition.

I had to say it before someone else did.

No but I think it is very encouraging that Panavision tested ALL the sensors out there in the wild and decided on the Weapon 8K sensor and tech. They have done a nice job in the design with internal motors for focus and iris so no wires, no exterior motors. FIZ built in.

Aside from the stellar image quality and color science, I'm sure they were drawn to the progressive nature that RED has as company and the customer-centric way they run things in some ways.

Michael Cioni may have been in on making this possible.

Really looks like good craftsmanship. And those Panavision primes and anamorphics just get me every time. Looks like the only thing missing is the side handle.

As far as I know, Panavision never sold a camera or lens in the 60+ year history of the company. They're strictly rental. They do sell expendables and some accessories.

I think politically, Panavision is not happy that Arri has their own rental facilities in some areas that are in direct competition with them, plus Arri makes, sells, and rents world-class lenses. It makes better business sense to make a Panavised Red camera that works with Panavision lenses. I think this is all about being competitive and providing something you can't buy anywhere else.

I have seen DPs who have objections to certain things about the basic Red camera, but a lot of those problems were addressed with the Panavised DXL camera. It looks really good and has a lot of very well-thought-out features.

I'm interested to see if the LightIronColour and LightIronGamma become available in RCXp...

If it will be and there is no reason why it will not, it still will not do any good without the actual DXL camera, as that color science will only apply to those cameras with their proprietary OLPFs and IR filters. DXL camera will not be available for purchase.

Exciting news ! From an outside perspective 8K sensor production seems constipated but Panavision at least is confident enough that there will be sensors available that they are announcing an early 2017 release. This is good news for everyone and although in the past Red and Panavision seemed to have had a rocky relationship putting the 8K Red sensor in their camera is a huge vote of confidence. I am thrilled that I will eventually be running the same sensor in my camera as these bad boys.

Does it feature a new OLPF or the STH/STANDARD? If the regular OLPF is in there it would be tremendous to have the Light Iron color science as an option for regular Weapons. At least it should be since I think that some productions might want to shoot with the Panavision and use Weapons as second unit or for drones, under water housings, crash cams etc. so the light iron colors science and also a new OLPF should I think be available even for regular Weapons. At least I really hope so, I have the greatest admire for what Light Iron does :)

So much about this camera and direction makes sense it really is an exciting new chapter for film production.

I don't know the particulars but it seems that the Light Iron factor is all post-debayer (filters notwithstanding) - one great thing about this is it will make the full potential of RED cameras accessible/known to people who don't have the option of taking their files to Light Iron, Deluxe, Fotokem and the like.

Isn't everything with R3Ds post-related? If the color science were implemented in the Red SDK, we can use it in software like Resolve and that's the main importance.

Probably should have called this thread Red 8k camera wrapped with extras. Only thing to me thats weird is no Red logo anywhere.

It doesn't have a Red logo because it's not a Red camera. It only uses a Red sensor. A camera is so much more than just the sensor. If anybody thinks images out of this camera will look just like images out of a Red Weapon they are in for a surprise. Red sensor but everything else that makes the image is Panavision.
