  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic TC-P50VT25 Viera 50" 3D monitor

This is a great idea, I'm in! Any takers?

I'm definitely interested.

Kit should include a Klein K-10 or Hubble probe. Possibly a secondary probe like an EyeOne Pro. Laptop with Cinespace software. Probably a crash-course instructional video or quick-start guide. Maybe some logs or users' notes where people can note tips/tricks for common display and projector types.

As long as it's the Photo Research PR-655 Spectro-radiometer - which according to Cioni
Is THE premier choice for Calibration - them count me in too because I'm about
To buy one but they are $13500 to 16,500 fully equipped for LED LCD PLaSmA CRt and projector

http://www.photoresearch.com/current/pr655.asp

EDIT: This model is also super easy to use and outperforms Hubble and Calman K-10

Sounds good, Tim. :)

So, who's going to step up and buy the kit? Hehe... My budget is too tight at the moment and we're looking at $20~25K to get this all set up and running. I was thinking with the K-10 probe, the initial kit could be kept right at $10K.

I'm slated to buy the kit before year end -
Right now the guy comes down and calibrates our monitors and projector
For free ever couple months - as he is trying hard
To get me to buy it :) but I figure I have one more DEMO
And then im going to have to pony up.

Maybe make a list of all the other kit
We decide on ? K-10 is also very very good
Kaku Ito uses it in Japan -

This monitor actually does calibrate 100% to Rec. 709 -- More dialed in than the Panny 11 -- WITHOUT LUTS.

So this is really great news! Just shows you how the image processing technology in these panels continues to improve. But you do need a probe ... and patience and practice to dial it in.

So i recently purchased this monitor for two reasons. Just now beginning to shoot and edit 3d....what a chore editing 3d is from 2d.
Also for doing some color grading as a second monitor and to view what my final results look like on consumer monitor.

What i noticed on this monitor is it has a dull feeling to it....the images are not quite as bright and seem somehow "dull" compared to a phillips 42" LCD that i was previously using. Now that said there are a number of combinations of settings on this Panasonic monitor.

Can you guys recommend your best settings for color work? I have my picture settings set like this:

pict. mode: THX
contrast: +60
brightness: +65
color +55
tint: 0
sharpness: +60
3d 6/c filter: off
block NR: on
Mosquito NR: off
Black level: light
aspect adjustments:
screen size: full
hdsize: 2
h size: 1

color temp: warm1
color mgmnt: on
cats: on
videoNR: medium
blur reduction: off

I typically run video (while editing) through MXO2LE (hdmi-10bit) to my monitor and the difference in my 1yr. old phillips 1080p monitor and this is surprisingly different. My phillips just looks so much brighter and more alive. This is with the MXO2 built in calibration where i can adjust any monitor with color bars (via FCP) and blue channel as well.

Now i definitely may not be setting the monitor correctly as well. But that is what i'm noticing so far. Burn in still underway.

Just an FYI - I just got the Panasonic TC-P50VT25 Viera 50" 3D monitor and it plays 3D from side-by-side 3D media over HDMI.

That means you can use a DAVIO box to take two SDI streams from SCRATCH (or a 3D rig, or a QTAKE video assist system) - send out a HDMI side-by-side - put on active shutter glasses and you are in business.

This monitor looks great. I have not put the probe on it yet to see how the color stands up for grading - but it looks damn good. Under $2000 with one pair of 3D shutter glasses.

Newbie here. When sending the side-by-side signal via a AJA KONA3's SDI output (converted to HDMI) to a 3D Viera, does the entire side-by-side image (double the width on 1080p = 3840 x 1080) have to be squeeze back to 1080p before output?

The max input resolution to the VT25 is 1920x1080. So when you send side-by-side 3D, it's a 1920x1080 image that hast two frames squeezed side by side into it. When the TV displays them, it unsqueezes, you're really seeing a 960x1080 image for each eye, stretched to fill the entire screen.

The VT25 also accepts over-under 3D frames, which means they are squeezed vertically into the 1080p frame, one on top of the other.

If using the Kona 3G, you'll be able to send HDMI 1.4 "packed frames", which is two full-resolution frames for each eye.

Hi Jeff, many thanks for responding so quickly. Looking through the Kona 3 intro pages, they say the card can take 2 separate L/R inputs and mix them into the "packed frames" format.

But what happens when one needs to output separate L/R images directing from a grading/compositing/playback application? Are there such apps out there that already support 2 simultaneous streams of video outputs?

May be interested in this as well...Good idea Blair.

This is great to know. I definitely need a probe... Who wants to buy me one? Hey Blair & Tim, are you guys still interested in and thinking of this traveling calibration kit? I'm still interested.

I'm under the impression that will work, if the software can feed two streams into the card for conversion to packed frame format. However, I don't know for sure on that one -- I would send that question straight to the guys at AJA.

I am having persistence issues with this monitor right now, trying a few burn in and wiping tools I found on the internet. Anyway know of a good way to fix this?

I'm suffering a similar image burn in. At least I know which station it happened on during the burn-in period. The pixel orbitor didn't seem to do its job. My two year old one is problem free. Go figure. Call Panasonic and complain.

The tool in the menu system helped a little. It rolls black and white bars for 15 minutes, but my issue is still there. Other than that, it's clearly the best plasma I've afforded.

No persistence or burn-in issues on mine... yet.

Those of you having persistence or burn-in on these displays, do you have the enhanced blacks switched on? And what are your brightness settings? Do you use the display in a dark environment or brighter, well-lit work area? I'm wondering if there's a brightness threshold on these monitors where burn-in can become an issue.

Under Advanced Picture in the menu, there's the Black Level option. You can choose Dark or Light. For some reason in my head I was thinking it was Enhanced and Standard instead of Dark and Light.

I am still waiting to see if the wiping tools work, if not I am going to be on the phone with Panasonic for lots and lots of days.

Found it....the options are LIGHT or DARK.
And makes a BIG difference.
Thanks for the tip Jeff.

I think you need

CATS off
and Video NR off

Our is set up Professional 1 menu but as ours is a european version menu's are slightly different. We set contrast higher but my guess is all of these displays if lined up with a Hubble and LUT box of some sorts will have slightly different base settings. We get ours as nears as possible then calibrate via Hubble and create a LUT to bring it in exactly.

Hey Dave what software are you using?
I have been looking into software from Steve Shaw at Lightillusion, the Lightspace CMS package.
