  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic TC-P50VT25 Viera 50" 3D monitor

Reading AVForum n many posts the VT20 (25) has huge motion artefact issues when running at 50Hz :( Tad of a pain in PAL land.

Anyone experienced these? seems most posters that have the panel are playing 30/24 not 25.

Or maybe its the CIE XYZ equivalent of 18% grey what we should be running for 2 week?

(of course, this requires you to have some color calibration tools to achieve.)

We don't do any color calibration until the monitor is burned in. Just send it a mid-grey from any device that will feed the monitor.
 
If I could divert the topic away from burn in for the moment, is there a consensus on the glasses that come with the VT25? Mine have some irregularities in the LCD that give minor distortions. Are there other compatible glasses? I tried the Nvidias but couldn't get them to work.

Nvidia glasses work, but only through a computer with Nvidia GPU.

Has anyone tried grading any 3D footage via decklink 3D and VT25 with Resolve?

As I'm aware of, Apple pipeline doesn't allow it.

I don't see any point of grading in 3D, but who really wants to do it this way might want to check Iridas, Nvidia 3D Vision Pro and platform who's GPU drivers don't attend classes for "challenged".

Blackmagic Design DECKLINK HD EXTREME 3D

and

TC-P50VT25 VS (or less expensive alternative - the 3D is not needed for me)


I can not afford calibration tools AND I live in middle of nowhere so cant have a tech come do it.


so should I not even bother spending 3K then? any tips?

(this is not full time career, I have 3 documentaries I shot that I have to now edit and finish - and that's pretty much it)

If you don't need 3D Id buy a TH 50PF20E or TH 42PF42E and Black Magic HD Link they work very well. You must get it lined up though.

Am I correct you are suggesting Black Magic HD Link, in addition, to the Blackmagic Design DECKLINK HD EXTREME 3D ?


Is the sole purpose of HD Link to have an additional output to a monitor (like HP Dreamcolor of greater).

So I would have

Blackmagic Design DECKLINK HD EXTREME 3D > Plasma (but Blackmagic disabled ability to do additional simultaneous output to Monitor, soooo I need)....

DECKLINK HD EXTREME 3D > HD Link > Monitor

giving me simultaneous output to Plasma and Monitor

??

One thing to keep in mind with these panels - you need to "burn" them in before you use them. Display 18% gray - and leave them on. How long depends on who you ask. If you ask me - I'll tell you a solid two weeks, 24/7.

Hey Mark. Can you please explain what one should do this? Is this procedure specific to these LCD monitors? What happens if you don't do this?

Burn in is a plasma thing (and sometimes a projector thing). The way plasma monitors work is they lose brightness over their life-span, but a significant amount of brightness is lost in the first 100 hours or so. You will not get a stable calibration if you don't break them in or run them for 150-200 hours first. After that they tend to normalize and the decay rate slows. The change from initial set-up to full break in on my VT25 was actually rather mild compared to other plasmas I've installed or owned, nowhere near as bad as my older 42" Panny 9 series. However, it was still visibly noticeable to my eyes.

Any good calibration technician will recommend this with plasma screens. If you check out related forums like avsforum.com, you can find more specific info and there are various image collections to run as a slide-show or DVDs you can get (many of them free) all for the intended purpose of helping you break-in the display.

I kept mine on, running movies, watching TV, etc.. I watched more World Cup matches this year than probably the rest of my life combined as I was breaking in my new plasma. :) Some people recommend you turn the brightness down during the break-in cycle, but others say not to. I think this was more important in the past with previous generations which suffered from burn-in and persistence issues. But now, plasmas don't have much of an issue with that and lowering your brightness only seems to make the break-in period take longer.

What happens if you don't break-in the display before calibrating? Well, you will waste your time calibrating early, is what happens. RGB and black levels will change as the display settles itself.

Once calibrated, you should check your calibration every 30 days if you can, if you're using this for color work. If it's for non-critical monitoring, you can probably go longer, but still be mindful of it. For home theatre use, a calibration once a year seems to be what most ISF techs recommend.

Yes

The idea of the HD link is to insert a 3D LUT. It keeps the Monitoring self contained that way. However, Some video cards can run 3D LUT's too. We prefer to run the LUT in the HD link though in case the display is ever fed from any other device.

What if an ISF guy put together a kit that included test gear and a step by step manual in a ready to ship case. The case keeps hopping around the country from user to user on a set schedule.

Cheaper than having an ISF guy come to you, and far more practical for those who are not located in or near a production center.

Perhaps a couple dozen RedUsers could form a co-op to develop the kit, spread the cost so its reasonable, set up a regular schedule so every 60 days it arrives at your shop, you use it, then send it on to the next guy.

For example, if it cost $10,000 to create the "kit", that would be $500 each for 20 users, you get it for 1 or 2 days every 60-90 days, the only continuing cost would be FedExing it to the next person estimated at $40 per use. One nice thing is after the first couple calibrations you would know the drill pretty well and could complete the task fairly quickly.

Obviously more research would be required to determine cost levels for creating the kit (Hubble, Sencore, X-rite), estimate for upkeep, usable lifespan of the gear (3 to 5 years I would hope), paying an ISF tech to build out the kit with the right tools and step by step guide, Peli case, etc.

Might be a good way for mid-sized shops to control the cost of maintaining proper calibration. If there is enough interest we can create a working group to look at options and work out the details.

I'm up in mid MN, there is zero options for any ISF up here.

Can anybody recommend a good but reasonable probe?

for that matter ...why cant you get monitors pre-calibrated (to a generic studio space)
