  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic GH5 gets a kick in the pants, firmware update coming. And YI 4k+ 4kp60.

http://4k.com/news/meet-the-panasonic-gh5-an-hdr-video-recording-monster-for-4k-at-60fps-18104/

This article discusses shooting HDR video on the GH5, and goes into a descent firmware update to 400mb/s recording at 4kp30 4:2:2 10 bit. Just thinking about it, if that isn't at inter frame, it will be disappointing, and if they could do it for 4kp50 at 4:2:2 12 bit, and increase the 6k photo grsme rate to p50, we might have a base line camera. Another firmware option they could look at including would be packing raw 12 bit hdr into 4:2:2 footage. Very possible to do.

Anyway, Yi is about to release a 4k+ 4kp60,action camera, and do a raw m4/3rds still (I imagine might also get a higher frame rate in its next release, if any) so we need don't need half measures in the mirrorless B camera market.

GH5 icomparison to Raven, you have got to be joking for cinema level use. In comparison to helium, even more of joking. But this makes real progress for the lowly GH series.

A sub $2,000 camera offering 4k 60p, offering 10-bit 4:2:2 4k 30p, with inbuilt stabilisation and circa 12 stops of DR?

You'd have to be a pretty cynical person to not see that as the amazing deal and advance it is and to try to find fault with it.

Not to mention in 1 month you'll be able to buy one as opposed to a - several times the price - Raven.

Why would you try to take an inexpensive hybrid stills/video camera that will take the entry-level market by storm, and try to compare it to Helium?

I'm realistic, it is about cinema here, but this has c camera question mark over it! However, a little bit more relatively cheap improvements and it would be a completely different story. 12 stops, :) . I've got cheap cameras with more than 12 stops going back into mid to early last decade. 27 stops is special, 12 is consumer grade tech these days. The small cheap sensors this year should be coming out beyond 16 stops a bit more.

Now, you the rest, they could make a fortune at half the price. I know how much high volume manufacturers can do stuff for. The ambarella chipset technology has been extensively licensed historically, and you look at most all cheap action cameras, they will have it. You extrapolate how much a camera like this should cost from those, you get an simple idea. However what we are seeing here is premium product pricing (though not as premium as a certain Canon). They didn't eben use their own sensor design. So, yes, they could have done way note fur the price, but didn't even do the little bit more.

Looks like the 400mb/s is iframe only, not inter (which on a csmers like this would be pretty good at 4p30 and acceptable at p60).

It's a consumer grade entry-level camera. Nobody is going to be shooting Transformers on it. Internet forums have a habit of completely dismissing a camera they have never put their hands on, even when it is not intended for their particular slice of the market.

It's the same price as a Sony A6500. Considerably cheaper than a 5D MKIV. Only a little bit more than a 7Dmk2. About half the price of an A7smkII which has 8-bit 4:2:0 4k recording.

It will sell brilliantly.

I'd probably get use out of one for car mounts etc because the codec would be more robust than the A7sII's 8-bit.

I'd rather have one of these than an Ursa, despite the specs of the Ursa being better.

Looks like great camera for that money. Anamorphic as well. Great value, thats for sure ....

For 2K you can't find anything better out there. Does it compare to a 30K Helium? No and it shouldn't. I have used the GH4 extensively in the past and I have a sneaky suspicion that we'll see a lot more of the "5" in the coming year...

Just wait for the GH6, or the 6k red camera phone.

Ben, it is taking money from the naive. This is their premium camera, no way a $20 entry level camera. It can afford to do more, but is marketed to the naive.

The GH5 is a great camera for students and people on a budget to make stuff, and will probably be a good crash cam too.

GH5 looks like a pretty capable camera and hats off to Panasonic.

12 stops with log and 10 bit UHD out is sufficient to get a great looking image.

Ill be replacing my 2 gh4 with 2 gh5 and I wont need my external recorders anymore which is awesome. this is paired with my Epic-W

thats right, how did you arrive here??

No the GH5 is their 5D+, you are confusing markets it is in. As far as a video camera goes, the reality is that 300mb/s 4kp50/60 4:2:2 h264 is what you use for good video (600mb/s is probably for good cinema, but I would have to do the calculations, as I haven't done them for a long time). Now, 10 bits is more a sdr video thing, 12-14+ bits cinema in this HDR age.

Now, as we are in Red, a comparison to Red use, is it is lacking. As a low end camera it gas some merit. As a cinema crash cam, it has not got a very good 4kp50 mode. When somebody that spends 6-18 months grading feature films comes along to something like this, there is only so much they can do to conform it to the other footage they have been spending all that time on. So a compromise or a mismatch is likely, as they can't push the 8 bits around much. My point is, that they only needed to go a bit more, like the 300mb/s 4kp50/60 4:2:2 h264 10-12+ bit mode, or 6k photo mode equivalent, to be a nice low end all round camera. Technology wise it probably wasn't such a great leap, but I don't know if a firmware update could do it on the present camera, even if the 4:2:2 functionality is reconfigurable, the current processing setup might not be able to stably do it and keep the heat down. A choice of suitable engine with enough overhead (to do 4kp50, p60 is not so needed with us, but HDTV is supposed to be able to handle p50).

Well, I think the point is the specs are only part of the story here. People have made quality content on far less capable image capture systems, and people have enjoyed that content. I like that you are always thinking ahead and trying to imagine what the world could be if people were just smarter and made better decisions about what to bring to market but I have to tell you, someone and more likely many are going to get a hold of this camera and produce things that I would never be able to make with the greatest camera you could ever offer me. Give me 28K, 120fps, RAW, 18 stops of DR, blah, blah, blah and I will never be able to achieve what these people will achieve with the "inferior" GH5. Specs are fun to talk about sometimes but really it's the content that ultimately drives us. And where we are at currently with technology, this camera is a capable tool of making someone's artistic vision come alive. It's not always about perfect skin tones, endless DR, etc. It's about what you are able to achieve with your imagination and the tools you have available to you. It's a lesson I continue to learn as I watch talented people do things I am envious of.
So, I'm not asking you to stop imagining what the future could bring in terms of technology but rather embrace the opportunities the technology that is here can bring. And if you or someone else is able to bring amazing camera specs to a wider group of people through a cheaper price point and make it sustainable, I think that will be embraced too.
