  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Origo - heres the deal...

Could someone clarify what they mean by this barrel rotating thing? I do not use the Origo, but I do use a lot of other Lemo bits, and i assemble my own cables. Having seen up close how the connectors go together, im having a hard time imagining how the barrel could rotate once it is has been inserted into the socket?

Is it the whole barrel or just the grenade grip that rotates? There is a key that sticks out of the plug that locks the plug into the socket, in the effected connectors is this missing or damaged?

There is only afew millimeters of travel before the pins engage inside, which would obviously make twisting impossible. Does this problem happen as the connector is plugged in, or does it happen at some other point, when its being assembled or repaired etc?

Please clarify how this happens, a little video showing a dodgy connector rotating would be useful...

Thanks a lot,

Pete.

We were using the origo the other day. I pressed the mute button in order to get the beeping sound off once and after a couple of minutes it started going crazy. The beeping sound started to go on and off inconsistently. We switched it off and started from scratch only to find out this was always happening. We decided to stop using it and further test it off the shoot. While on testing something else happened, we were shooting in normal mode, and out of nowhere the camera freezes. The indicator on the monitor that shows how much battery is left turned into AC mode, although we were still on batteries. The camera freezes. No button is functional. We can just power it down and restart. We then decided not to use the origo any more. We feel it may have caused this awkward problems. We reinstalled the firmware after those weird freezes. The cam works fine, although there is a weird sound coming out of it on the headphones output and on the files aswell. We havent used the origo since, but I know we might need it soon. How con we solve this matter? We are shipping the cam to LA HQ to see if they can come up with the solution on wheter this was caused by what.
Please let me know if there are further news on this matters. Thanks.

That sounds horrible Esteban. All these stories make me very cautious of Viewfactor company. Curt is not the most honest of fellows it seems all the times and it looks like many of cameras are going down from bad connectors and product.

Has Curt said he will fix and repair and be responsible for damage his product causes anywhere yet?

I am using an Origo for six months without a single problem.

I never met Curt in person but i am curious on why you badmouth him like that. Was he dishonest with you in some way? He must have really done something bad to you if you chose this to be your first post in this forum.

Oh geez Roger, the case on esteban is not even clear if the problem lies on RED or VF.

I use Origo without problems too.

Those of you who know Curt personally realize how outlandish these claims against him personally are. Those of you who don't should tread with a little more care.

If the conversation of Curt personally is coming up, then I'd like to go on the record as saying he's one of the smartest, nicest guys I've ever met, and I've met a lot of brilliant people.

I understand how it may be difficult for some customers to understand how and why certain things have happened with his company, but from what I've seen, Curt literally spends 24 hours a day working to get his product out the door and fix issues. Curt's biggest problem is that he hasn't figured out how to clone himself, or work for more than 36 hours without sleep.

Some of you really are disconnected -

With the number of people, and considering who, defending Curt and VF, those of you speaking poorly should start reconsidering what you're saying...

First, by "many REDs going down" I doubt that means even 2% of the available cameras. Second, if you haven't spent time with Curt - shut your pie holes! Seriously take a long walk off a short pier.

If you're unhappy with product delay, ask for a refund and quit posting about it. But seriously shut your pie holes - it is beyond old, you aren't changing anything or contributing.

Those of you bitching (assumption coming) probably don't even work on a daily, professional basis with the camera anyway and if you do - NO WHINING

I dare anyone of the whiners to do a better job -

Oh and the Origo's I have work flawlessly on damn near a daily basis and my camera has only gone back to the mainland once - audio upgrade, no problems.

I have two Origos working fine since November... very useful piece of equipment.
Esteban: looks like you connected the Origo in the lower camera connector (which enables Time Lapse operation... that´s why the camera "freezed"): it should always be connected in the upper connector for normal operation.
As of VFS.... a loooong time will go until any small company collects full payment in advance for a future piece of gear... we all learned (customers AND companies) it´s a big mistake!

Exactly. And what Nate said too.

Lets keep the name calling down... Curt is trying his best here to resolve any issues he may have, he has stopped using the no-name connectors, and he by no means is a dodgy character.. You guys gotta remember it is just one guy.. We at RED have had our fair share of problems ourselves, and having an open development program always comes with a dash of frustration, its unavoidable.

Oh my gosh, why would you post something that personal as your first post?
I am just sharing my experience as I also received a survey from viewfactor in order to help them nail the problem down. I am not certain the damage was caused by the Origo, but there is reasonable doubt. Eventhough I would never feel there is a bad intention from VF to screw us up. Au contraire, I would say they are trying their best to put whatever is best on accessories on the market. Thats all.

my origo works fine. no problems here, curt and company have been good to me.

no affiliation with VF here. don't even own a unit.

BUT I spoke with Curt at length at NAB. he seemed honest, down-to-earth, intelligent and highly committed to the product. He also was willing to talk about some of the problems they are working through.

Jarred,

Unfortunately the Origo problems burnt customers badly and Red has its own share of the blame.

1. I used Origo as a reasonable person would do
2. The camera was working fine
3. I sent the camera for audio upgrade on 17 April
4. On 4 May - nearly 3 weeks later (!) I was informed to pay $800
5. I paid $800 in a timely manner
6. Over a month since I sent the camera, I am still without the camera, without $800 and with Origo which will probably end up in the rubish bin

Jarred, if you are telling us that Red is not gauging the customers to rectify the problem that was caused due to misunderstanding between Red and VF, I think you better back it up.

If you are telling us that it was a MAJOR damage, and the camera is still working, you better come with better explanations because I am telling you that you are gauging money and you are unwilling to deal with the issues.

The manual says the pins are protected. The camera is under warranty. The manual does not warn about using the socket and a reasonable user would expect that, even if something went wrong, like reversed plug, it would be covered under warranty.

Mate, despite being supportive and having had good experience from Red service until now, reluctantly but firmly I am placing my complaint.

I hope it is resolved quickly. And, if you can't even repair the camera in a timely manner or at all, please return the repair money and send the camera back. It is costing me even more not having it here.

I have offered numerous solutions for us, Red and VF to come to the party and find a reasonable way of addressing this problem. Sadly, both VF and Red turned their backs on us, the customers. It doesn't go well in the community.

I hope VF and Red will reconsider.
