  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Olympus ME51s Scratch Mic for Red Scarlet or Epic - tested & works!

being that mine is mounted on the front of my rails, you cant even hear the fan. I had my fan up to 45% during record. see if you can hear it during my video? obviously just for scratch, wouldnt use this as a pro mic, but still this is amazing.

Hey Dom - that is damn brilliant! thanks for posting idea and test...

no prob stu. It works like a charm whats nice too is since it mounts in front and there is slack, if needed just unplug and move front accessories on or off, same with rear if you unplug from camera. super easy.

Unless I'm doing something wrong. When I first tried the mic, I thought they were both active. But the left mic on the olympus mic is clearly picking way more sound and the two mics are so close to each other. But my monitoring headphones only get one channel on both balanced and unbalanced.

Yes. this is correct that only one channel you will hear in your headphones, the one the mike is plugged into.
However when balanced config is on, tip and middle are two mikes delivered to differential amplifier on (+) and (-) respectivly.
If both mikes will be side by side and facing forward you will not hear anything stright ahead since signal from both mikes will be the same and cancelled on the + and - input of the preamp.

If mikes are facing in opposite direction we have the same situation but only at the right angle to the audio source.
Any side facing signal will be received with + 3dB

So kind of antidirectional mike.

Does anyone know if the ME51s will work with phantom power? I know you can disable it, but I would rather not since it would be useful for other accessories (like a wireless FF).

Received the 52 today, not seeing anything right now. It sees that there is a mic plugged in, but it's not bouncing any levels.

How do I toggle phantom power?

im on the new beta. olympus works great still. i had to go back in though and enable audio recording again.

I enabled Audio Recording, but my 52 still doesn't work.

(EDIT)
Settings > Audio/Video > Audio Channels

Set Ch 1/2 Source > CAM ANALOG
Set ch 1/2 Mode > BAL./48V

Then go to Settings > Audio/Video > Audio Input
to enable audio recording

(DOUBLE EDIT)
Whether on or off, I'm not getting anything from the 52.

Anyone running the BETA and it actually works?

im running beta, with original mic that tonaci posted. I get audio signals and it comes through in RCX.

instead of buying new equipment, I attach an XLR adaptor that i ordered from Fortis Cinema on the top plate and use a small shotgun mic i already own to always record a scratch track, or even sometimes pick up usable audio.

Does anyone know if this mic still works for scratch purposes with the latest release build? I need to order one in the next few days and need to know that it works.

So does the Olympus ME-52w work or not? I prefer mono and unidirectional (and noise cancelling), so it seems like it could be the perfect fit. Also, the amazon page suggests that there are fakes around, maybe that's why some aren't working.

Were you able to get it functional Brandon? If so, what did you set the jack to (balanced, unbalanced, mic/line, phantom or non-phantom, etc.)?

I have Scarlet Build v4.0.6 and the Olympus mic.

Although it works, I cannot seem to get a clean signal. I hear digital blips and beeps when the SSD writes data. It will allow me to use it as a scratch mic to reference the waveform and sync with another audio source, but it is completely unusable in any other way.

What's the latest word on the ME51S? Can anyone confirm it still plugs in and just works?

Yes it works just plugging in and turning on your audio in the audio controls.
Quality is Extremely poor this is not a mic for useable sound this mic is only for click track and to have something to laugh at when you hear your friends say something.
I love these little mics and i do my best to carry a few in my DIT bag and camera gear at all times.

Its directly next to the fan I mean its like touching the fan so don't try to use this audio ITS NEXt to the Fan.
