I think it is hit or miss. I purchased two button mics.. one sony and one no name brand one and both didn't work.

I had one of these: http://www.meritline.com/mini-microphone-for-computer-pc-laptop-notebook---p-38156.aspx cheap microphones lying around, so I tried it. Works fine for scratch audio.
this mic did NOT work on my Epic, however, Olympus ME-52W did work just fine... well, fine for scratch audio, because of the fan...
Anybody could tell me what channel on ME51 is actually active.
Right or Left?
Socked is mono and mike is stereo so only one mikrophone will be active, correct?
Or both mikes are working in bipolar mode when balanced audio input is selected?
But if both mikes are working than it will be dirrectionaly blind along the axis going forward and most sensitivity will be sideways.

it's just one mic and it's the left one thats active.
Thanks!
Did you try to configure mike input as a balanced?
(-) should be R mike
(+) should be L mike
I think
Ground will be the shield on the mike so it should work on two mikes in balanced mode (differential mode).
Are you sure?
I plugged small iPad headphones and I got both headphones active on one audio channel
