  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Olympus ME51s Scratch Mic for Red Scarlet or Epic - tested & works!

the mic works for me, although the fan noise is dramatic if you simply plug it onto the body. Nonetheless, good enough for music video sync. Good find Tonaci!

Thanks Tonaci, Finally! a confirmed plug and play scratch mic.

are there any more videos featuring this mic online (without the one made by Tonaci)?

this mic did NOT work on my Epic, however, Olympus ME-52W did work just fine... well, fine for scratch audio, because of the fan...

Dennis, are you saying the noise cancelling properties of the mike cancelled out the fan noise?

So i just got this since i primarily do music videos. Supplied cable is perfect length to run through 18" 15mm rails. and just so happens that 15mm is perfect to tuck the mic in. check out the pics. Yea you might have to unplug if you move some things around. But for now its nowhere near the fan and furthest point forward on my rig. and totally not in the way at all. Its great.

Anybody could tell me what channel on ME51 is actually active.
Right or Left?

Socked is mono and mike is stereo so only one mikrophone will be active, correct?

Or both mikes are working in bipolar mode when balanced audio input is selected?
But if both mikes are working than it will be dirrectionaly blind along the axis going forward and most sensitivity will be sideways.

Just a quick test i did at my moms. this is miles better than what i was using as my scratch track solution. best part is, how its configured, you dont even know its there. Just part of rail system, no bulky attacments holding up a microphone.

it's just one mic and it's the left one thats active.

being that mine is mounted on the front of my rails, you cant even hear the fan. I had my fan up to 45% during record. see if you can hear it during my video? obviously just for scratch, wouldnt use this as a pro mic, but still this is amazing.

Thanks!
Did you try to configure mike input as a balanced?
(-) should be R mike
(+) should be L mike
I think

Ground will be the shield on the mike so it should work on two mikes in balanced mode (differential mode).

Just tried setting the camera to balanced and the results were the same. Only the left channel is active on mic.

Thanks!

Unless I'm doing something wrong. When I first tried the mic, I thought they were both active. But the left mic on the olympus mic is clearly picking way more sound and the two mics are so close to each other. But my monitoring headphones only get one channel on both balanced and unbalanced.

Are you sure?
I plugged small iPad headphones and I got both headphones active on one audio channel
