  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

Just looking and don't see any footage in this thread. Was it posted somewhere else?

Not new, just work a lot

No, been lurking for some time on the boards and have shot a feature film and several music videos with the R1. Just caught this thread a while ago and did not see any links to footage.

Was looking for at least a frame from the HDR.

He was saying that people usually make a fuzz out of these announcements even when there's no link or footage.

Let's hope we see some kind of tests by next week.

:biggrin5:

Thanks.

Thanks.

I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Been shooting with the MX chip and it looks fantastic, Can't wait to see what this thing can do.

Looking to shoot a doc in Africa and Europe in the next several months and would love to get my hands on the extended dynamic range. If Jim and the team have the upgrade together by the time we shoot.

It's a Epic/Scarlet feature only and they said it probably wouldn't be completely finalized by the release of Epic but come as a firmware update later.

Thank you

Thank you

I guess I will need to be more specific when I choose to comment here.

Sometimes I leave out that I read every post in this thread leading up to this one and have a pretty good grasp on the written English language.

Yes, I know it is for Epic and Scarlet. Yes, I know Jim said it probably will not be wrapped up by the time Epic is released. Yes, I know that some people don't read through the pages before commenting.

Sorry for the rant. Some people just assume your an idiot and some assume your hear to bash.

I'll go back to my hole again.

Just out of curiosity, which cameras with interchangeable lenses have behind-the-lens ND filters? It's common in video cameras with fixed lenses, where the filter is figured into the lens optical design. I'm no expert, but the still cameras with behind-lens filters I've seen, use filters that match to and fit on the lens itself, not the camera.

Amongst others, the Sony EX-3. It has interchangeable lenses and a 3 position ND filter setting.

any existing PL-mount cameras with built-in ND?

Ok, good to know that 1/2" and 2/3" ENG cameras usually have built-in ND. I guess the lenses designed for those cameras take that into account. So no doubt, Scarlet could also be designed that way, if so desired (especially the fixed-lens model).

On the other hand, if you consider PL-mount cameras (and Nikon, Canon etc. lenses that people also convert for use), are there any examples of such cameras now with built-in ND filters? For some reason I had the idea that there would be optical compromises in that case, if you wanted to use any existing PL etc. lens on the camera, as people currently do with Red One.

Ha I didn't assume anything I think I should use more "" because sometimes things sound negative even when they aren't meant to (ha I know I have countless times)...Anyways, just answering what I thought was the question...Oh well, lets hope you're able to use it on your upcoming shoots b/c I know we all can't wait!!

A master needs to work with good paint

A master needs to work with good paint

My personal feeling is that these types of fears are all academic. At the end of the day, great cinematographers will rise to the top. They will light exquisitely, frame creatively, and nobody will acuse them of relying on technology, or getting things fixed in post. We are lucky for the new possibilities to generate art with new tools. But holding a new paint brush does not a master painter make.

I disagree as a new paintbrush may be just what is needed to make a perfect master in this collaborative art of storytelling.

Here is what I learned from a mentor Maish Kane:

The three creative tensions (or triangle) pits creativity against technology against resources.

The more you understand in any one area helps you achieve more in all areas. Someone may get better performances out of their actors, by understanding the resources or technology better. Sure it sounds weird or simple but it always applies in every situation in every production.

What I see here is a new tool and a great community trying to grasp it's workings so that they as individuals can apply it to their storytelling.

Thanks for this fresh inspiration Red Team,

Rosco

Hey thats a pretty nice summary.

Brings to mind the idea: "fast, cheap, good - pick any two".

Anyway, thank you for sharing that.

I guess the lenses designed for those cameras take that into account.

The B4 mount on 2/3" cameras has enough room between the back of lenses and the prism block that it's pretty trivial to fit a filter wheel in there - sometimes two!

man, it just gets better every day

It certainly is going to reduce the size of your crews if you want it to. If you're going for a naturalistic look (now very popular, including with me) then you have that many more situations where you don't need to bring in a light, where your doco or doco-style footage is going to look great.

The implications of this for independent cinema cannot be over-stated. I mean if this does what it says on the tin... then I'm floored.

Not sure that HDR is going to reduce the size of your crews at all. You still have to light properly. You shouldn't have to rely of the colorist, as awesome as they are, to do the work for you in post.

All HDR does is give you more dynamic range, allowing you to do much more to the image in post, it doesn't mean you have to light differently.
