Just got my nikon mount and put my 17-35 on it and it does not click into place - is that normal? Just used to mounting them on a dslr so I am looking for the click.

Martin,

does that mean there is something wrong with it or did they just forget the bushings (whatever that is)?

I did not receive any bushings and I just got it in the mail today.

just the 17-35? my nikon mount just shipped today. i'm thinking of getting the nikon 50mm 1.4 or 1.8. maybe the 85 1.4.

Right now all I have is the 17-35. I don't know if it is a problem. The lens is snug on the mount and it is not moving when I play with the aperture or zoom. ITs not going anywhere - I just want to know if it is supposed to click into place.

you can try the nikon thread about light leak. doug was recently posting there. he was the guy who designed the mount or the other posters would know. :)

Yes, it should click into place. Most likely it is very tight, being brand new and probably has the bushings installed. So you just have to turn it farther, counterclockwise, to get it to click. But it's so tight that you can't quite get it far enough. Most likely, if you change lenses a dozen times more or so, the bushings will bed themselves in and the lens will turn farther, and you will hear that click. Then you'll have to push the release lever to remove the lens.

In using Nikon lenses on the RED Nikon mount, the click you hear and feel when the lens finishes rotating into position is subtle - you can barely hear and feel it arrive there. Push the little metal lever on the left side of the mount to release the lens to de-mount it, then re-mount it, turning the lens slowly. If the mount is setup correctly there will be a small, nearly inaudible click as the lens pops into place at the end of the rotation, plus with slight rotational pressure on the lens, you'll notice you can't rotate the lens in the mounting direction any further.

A new RED Nikon mount set up properly will feel very snug. As Doug mentioned, it becomes easier to mount/de-mount lenses as you break the mount in by mounting/de-mounting lenses. If it is installed correctly, the mount should stay snug, with no wobble on the lenses you use.

Hope this helps...
