  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

I feel like I'm about to see man walk on the moon.
The Red HDR philosophy is so......... Mind.....

I don't belive it. Plain and simple... It's all just lies. Very high resolution lies. Charts may prove otherwise... :)

Jim, did you learn that when you were posting images of ISO 2000 on M-X and Graeme got mad on you because 5 minutes later it was better than what you posted? hehe

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how my human eyes can see more DR in an image than can be observed by a human eye... But I can't wait to get my first epic and find out

I'm guessing this is hyperbole, but since it actually took me a second to figure it out... for those that haven't: if you were standing next to the camera your eyes might not be able to resolve detail in some darker shadows or extreme highlights of the scene in front of you. The camera on the other hand can resolve and record the detail hidden from your eyes in said shadows and highlights so that you may then bring these portions of the image into the range of the human eye with post processing.

This is a good website for HDR photography:

Let's all remember that the (18 Step) DR target they are apparently using only allows
17 Stops of DR to be demonstrated in one shot.

So.......... If this RED HDR Mode reveals 17 Stops of DR we can all go out and celebrate.
That is if it does this while also shooting at 24 fps etc.

I'm so excited to see how many stop of dynamic range the Epic and Scarlet will have. I have heard it was around 17 stops, what is interesting to me is if the range can be changed, say moving up the range a couple stops or lowering it. For me that's the big factor, besides resolution and feel as mentioned, that determine how viewers judge your attempt to make digital mimic film. I cannot wait to get a Scarlet to truly work with a digital product that so closely mimics the legend that is film

You mean, more than 17? :coolgleamA:

You would need 19 steps to reveal 18 stops of DR. The first step is always zero.

That assumes the 1st step is blown out. If there is tone in step #1 and separation between the last stop and the background, you have more than 17 stops (probably just under 18)... on this DSC chart.

Ya I know the concept... but it's still one of those headache causing ideas. I remember a few years back duct-taping two canon hv-20's together and trying to shoot 24fps hdr landscapes. Results were about what you'd expect. I'm just intensely curious to see how Red pulled this off. Assuming we can shoot motion at 24fps without limitations on our shutter angle, etc.

Exciting times to say the least.

Test was done motion at 24fps and 1/48th shutter.

I could be wrong but I remember Jim saying that scarlet will have HDR video as well as epic, either way this is still very good news.

I seem to remember that, too. I pray it's not just wishful thinking. Congratulations to everyone at Red, especially Graeme!

I can't wait. I was jonesing so badly for some real dynamic range when shooting the 48 Hour Film Project this weekend.
