Jarred hates when someone calls them Jerrod.

But then pops Jerrod.

I'm confused :).

I've had UPS store guys spell his name Jerred...curse you, english language!

I'm curious to see how the fly-by-wire is going to work. For zoom and focus, it has to be pretty responsive. I don't doubt RED, but it seems like a hit-or-miss thing...

If everything is in simultaneous development...then I can't wait! could buy two cams at once then!

Fly by wire...

this should be brilliant for controls in an underwater housing. will the camera be fully controllable via a "LANC-style" wired input connection? apologies if this has been re-hashed previously.

Thanks!

Not sure they have the manpower to beta test Epic and Scarlet 2/3" at the same time...

In beta testing the Epic-X they are basically beta testing the 2/3" cinema Scarlet as well. I mean the Epic-X has everything the Scarlet has and more. The Epic brain does 3k scaled and all of the modules are exactly the same. From my understanding the Scarlet's are basically the same technology but just have fewer ASICs and maybe less expensive versions of some chips.

Understood, I'm just wondering about when one wishes to have control over multiple axes. This lens give the option for one manual or "imitation direct drive" (not pejorative, just don't know how better to describe it) via geared ring. I noticed the render with the REDgunner showed a zoom with two of these rings. Just wondering about the process of choosing what gets controlled where and and what happens when one wishes to control say, zoom and focus at the same time, or squeeze in an iris pull as well. Sometimes the "old fashioned" manual way is preferable, which I guess is why there's a geared ring there in the first place.

Like I said, Hmmn ... Not criticizing or disappointed, just interested in the planned process.

This brings up an interesting question about the Fixed and any of the electronic lenses.
Will there be a port and protocol for existing third party items like a varizoom to interface with the brain and control the fly by wire capabilities off of the brain, say on a pan handle? Or will there be a red module to replace the third party off body items? The Red gunner looks like such a thing but still on the body.

That is by so very far the most Bad A%$#@ Lens design I ever got my eyes on, and looking so forward to get my hands on too :001_tt1:

The Mad scientist @ RED really deserve some Recognition for all this stuff you guys are coming up with, simply Stunning!!

I would hazard a guess that most individuals signing up for a fixed lens 2/3" camera are doing so instead of something like an HVX. Therefore a digital toggle for zoom wouldn't be so off-putting to that user, just like an off lens dial for iris.

That or RED has once again come up with a wicked new way of f***ing our world up.

You always have 2/3" interchangeable for conventional option.

Same here. I often zoom and focus simultaneously on the lens while manning the tripod head movement with my other hand, but I'm also just used to doing it all myself. I'd be happy to have an excuse to get someone to help. I guess a non-fixed lens camera gives you all the options you could ever want, though.

Skip the middleman. If you're trying to pull focus, zoom and adjust the aperture at the same time you're going to be either an incredibly dexterous individual, a spider monkey or multiple people and using a follow focus system. If the ring is just a sensor anyway you might as well skip the middleman Remote -> FF -> Geared sensor -> E-Lens Servo and just go Remote -> Servo.

Then again the iris being a separate deal on the HVX/DVX always really annoyed me.

We are trying to make everyone happy... that's why this is such a difficult trick!

Jim

I can see that. And I hope you know how much a lot of us appreciate it. I keep smiling every time I read the specs for the new Epic. I've lived with cameras all my life, but have never been able to work every day with a camera that comes close to those specs. Thank you.

Jarred, would you please be so kind as to place an everyday object next to the lens, please? Just to get the dimensions right.

The Fixed lens even comes with a camera body accessory! (Probably not clear... the lens is massive relative to the body/sensor:) )

Reminds me of AutoDesk when they released 3D Studio 2.0. World Creation Toolkit, even comes with the accessory 3D Studio (poorly paraphrased)

Jim I know I missed out on the first round of pre-orders of the RED One but I sure am happy to have joined in as soon as I found out.
I got my RED because I do my own 3D and vfx so I needed the best possible source material to work with. And I couldn't be happier.
That is, until you announced Epic.
Now I do not want to turn in my One, been through thick and thin with my baby, so it's either Stage 1 or 2 for me.
My #1333 has been a great pleasure to play and work with but I could never take it on a skiing trip with me.
If you need any kind of feedback on Epic's performance in low temperatures, tricky lighting conditions with the RED Primes and Canon L glass then count me in for a Tattoo.
Plus I can (heck, I WANT) to try and see how Tattoo footage handles in Post.
Be it Stage 1 or 2, I know it will be one helluva ride and I am not going to let go!

EDIT: programmable zoom control!? sweet!
EDIT: so I can do my vfx and take the virtual camera's motion path (incl zoom and focus) and match them to my RED?

Jarred quick question; does Epic/Scarlet record a log of zoom and focus settings per frame (or per key change) so we can match it in post?

Ok, after talking with Peter Majtan on our ScarletUser Podcast, I am officially going 2/3" Scarlet all the way!

Really looking forward to working with the fixed lens...

Thanks for your endless work, RED Team. :001_wub:
