  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Obsolescence obsolete...

If the Father of Red is fired up enough to start posting again, I can't wait to see this 'weapon' and whatever else they're cookin' up in their mad scientist labs.

Jim, so nice to hear from you on this forum again. We don't expect you to chime in all the time, but every once in a while is pretty cool.

I take it you're just too excited that you can't contain yourself, and that bodes well for the entire industry. Feels a bit like 2007. ;-)

Love hearing from you Jim, we miss having you around here.
Me too, but after this (admittedly minor) exhibition of discontent I don't blame him one bit for staying away. Count me as more than satisfied and excited for the future. I was just looking at my last short shot on Scarlet Dragon on my 5k iMac in FCPX, fahgettabouttit!

Awesome.

Only wish I had been in the biz back then to have been able to ride this train from the very beginning. :)

For me it went Scarlet Brian ($7.5k) to Epic brain ($9.5k) to Dragon ($9.5k). So I'm in for a total of $26.5k for a brain that costs $24k new. But I've owned three different brains and used them for THREE YEARS!

WOW!

And people wonder why guys like me love RED.

There's three things in life that are certain- death, taxes, and Jim Jannard showing up to a camera fight.

And by fight, I of course mean the peaceful, friendly competitive type of fight sanctioned by the United Nations. :-)

Welcome back Jim. And thanks for the call too. You've been missed.

So...

In 2007 I bought a RED ONE with a 4K Mysterium sensor for $17,500. At that time, just for reference, a Sony F23 (2/3" 1080P sensor) was $175K. Plus SR (RGB) recorder.

In 2010 I upgraded to the 5K Mysterium-X sensor for $5750 . I am now in for a total of $23,250.

In 2012 I traded in my RED ONE (credit value $17,500) for a $28,000 EPIC M-X package. I am now in for a total of $33,750.

In 2013 I upgraded my EPIC M-X to the 6K Dragon sensor for $9500 . I am now in for a total of $43,250.

Soon... I will be able to trade in my EPIC Dragon for Weapon. God only knows what that means...

This is Obsolescence Obsolete. As promised.

The Hobbit. Avatar 2, 3 and 4. Ridley Scott. David Fincher. You.

Jim

Jim

good to see you back.

Really for me these past years has meant no compromise.
RED changed an industry. An industry is still catching up. :)

ARRI gained monoply based on this story: BETTER PIXELS NOT JUST MORE

>>> See the attached image >>>

So how you could fight against it?

>>> Just to make a camera that has better colour management

>>>>...And after that technical achievement it could be very easy to beat them at other points

>>> Also I hope so that JJ has got this message finally that I was reapeating for several years...

My credo in this case is: WEAPON = TRUE COLOURS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sanjin, we´ve been through this in stills photography. I see your point, we´ve always used digital backs equipped with DALSA chips in our MF cameras as I didn´t like the look of the Kodak sensors though they had higher resolution at the same time. I don´t expect a major change with this new body design (with the name not to be mentioned) as the sensor stays the same for this round but I see a big step from MX to Dragon. Colorwise I don´t see a problem competing with Arri, me think there´s a lot of other reasons involved in that game. By the way I also liked the MX look for darker grunchy looks :-) Of course YMMV.

Cheers, Ulf

Totally agree, the real way for Red to be the indisputable number 1 is to focus the work on the "BASICS" :

-Better color science
-Wider Dynamic range
-Low light capabilities

Everything else is "Bonus" ..

ARRI gained monoply based on this story: BETTER PIXELS NOT JUST MORE

Just make a camera that has better colour management

Yeah,

R1 to R1 MX to Epic to Dragon and now to WEAPON... Can't wait, and extremely happy to be a REDUSER since day "ONE"... Thank you for continuing the PROGRAM!!

BTW Jim...

You told me some time ago NOT to leave Reduser and I didn't... Even so I really wanted to do to how I have been attacked by some... And I am still here... TO STAY!!

I LOVE Jarred... And He is been doing an INSANE great Job in your absence on Recon...

But we also NEED you here...

So...

Please STAY with us again... This IS your home and I like to continue to read you here!!

Look forward to shake your hand, once again at NAB, with the added pleasure to congratulate you in person for your latest creation... Yet an other of your Technological Camera advancements "GIFT" to us all... "WEAPON"!!

Buying Red-One 505 was my best decision ever. It was one hell of a ride since then.
You can argue over Arri and Dragon all day but the best all-round camera with the most bang for the buck on the planet is the Dragon, period.
Would it be clever that the Dragon could record Prores on board, sure. Have some mistakes been made, sure. But tell me one Camera out there that delivers so much for that price.
I'm very excited about what the weapon will do.
Bring it on Jim. Very happy to hear from you.
Best
Tim
