  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Obsolescence obsolete...

I hope you have been able to have a little fun test-driving the Weapon. There's nothing like the pure joy of discovery.

It's nice to hear a few words from the Madman-in-Chief.

Jim,

Thank you for all that you and the Red Team inspire! Thank you for thinking like us, this is more than a gift..it is a relationship!

I hope in return, our films will make you proud! Best, Kennan & Karen Ward

Great to see you back, Jim. And yes, the investment I've put into RED is incredible. So worth it. I've been shooting gorgeous images for going on 7 years now. Thank you for all you have done. I would give my money to you any day.

Hey Jim! Good to hear from you.

A lot of old familiar faces on this thread from the early days... Maybe this year's NAB display should set up the original tent in a corner and host a shindig... show how the community's grown.

So...

In 2007 I bought a RED ONE with a 4K Mysterium sensor for $17,500. At that time, just for reference, a Sony F23 (2/3" 1080P sensor) was $175K. Plus SR (RGB) recorder.

In 2010 I upgraded to the 5K Mysterium-X sensor for $5750 . I am now in for a total of $23,250.

In 2012 I traded in my RED ONE (credit value $17,500) for a $28,000 EPIC M-X package. I am now in for a total of $33,750.

In 2013 I upgraded my EPIC M-X to the 6K Dragon sensor for $9500 . I am now in for a total of $43,250.

Soon... I will be able to trade in my EPIC Dragon for Weapon. God only knows what that means...

This is Obsolescence Obsolete. As promised.

The Hobbit. Avatar 2, 3 and 4. Ridley Scott. David Fincher. You.

Jim

Maybe, but let's not forget the cost of the accessories, which often end up being particular to each system.
As will be the case again for the "upgrade". Let's forget the name for the time being.

Welcome to the RED universe.
In order to make the camera work, you've got to buy all the accessories around it.
That's where the dough is.
Just like Gillette razors and Epson ink cartridges.

In the immortal words of Mcdonald's about the bottom line:
"It's not about the burger silly, it's about the fries."

In this case the sensor is only the burger.

So happy to see a post from Jim again here. :)

Jim you are a true visionary. You changed this business, you created chances for many people.

"The Hobbit. Avatar 2, 3 and 4. Ridley Scott. David Fincher. You."
This is nuts... ME?! WTF. I have access to the same tools. I will never get over this. Mind-blowing.

I'm in here since i heard about the RED One and begun to dream again when i heard about the fixed Scarlet. I finally bought into the DSMC-system with my Scarlet-X in 2011. I didn't just buy a camera, i also joined a great community or family and came closer to fulfilling my dream than i ever imagined.

RED already touched my life in many good ways and even plays a part in changing it.

Thank you Jim, Jarred, the whole RED-team.

A great journey that I plan to stick around for!

The defence rests, case closed. end of story. You can't argue with this!

Okay Mr. Burkhart, fair enough. How do you propose to remedy this? What would prove to be a better way to handle this?

One of the coolest things about this forum is its ability to crowdsource and vet ideas. There is no guarantee that anyone will listen, but I am rather certain that what reads as bitter insinuations without a viable solution set will only serve to anger your audience. That's not constructive, and I am sure that is not your intent.

Best,

Eryc

I dont even have EPIC in my scope let alone DRAGON.

I am happy with what I have at home (Scarlet) and at work (RED ONE).

Its just great to hear from you again Mr. Jannard ;)

Bitter? What on earth would I have to be bitter about?
Let's just say "realistic" instead.

Interesting that if one choses not to always drink the RED kool-aid, they are considered bitter.

I have a question for you. How long do you think it will be before the "upgrades" here cost more than the virtually the same technology in a single unified body from another camera manufacturer?

Or has it already arrived?

Do you think this is not lost on Jannard?

Some other questions.

How much are you in for, in terms of accessories beyond a "brain" for $25,000? $15-20K more?
This is a marketing dream, but is that kind of expense really sustainable in today's technological environment?

Were the accessories for the RED One carried over into the Epic/Scarlet system?

If the next upgrade is for the body, what do you think the chances are that you will be able to use most of the accessories you bought are?

That's the fries, Mr. Tramonn. That's the fries.

Further, now that the upgrades for a five year old camera are going to stop, what does that make the camera?
I believe the word is "obsolete". All good things must come to an end.

You ask me to suggest another system?

Sure.
Rent the right body for the right job, invest in lenses and the most solid, universal accessories you can find.

- or otherwise -

Stay camera agnostic and accept the following:

Your camera is disposable.
it's already obsolete.

Get used to it. Embrace it. Enjoy it.

And try to not spend $50K for what you can get for $10K while you are at it.

Crazy thing is I'm still using a R1MX with great results. Bought it during that battle tested special a few years ago. There's a lot of life in these cameras.

this game can go on and on for ever, you can jump on the wagon of todays newest, tomorrows oldest, or you can still make great cinematography using the camera that you have, i love my RED MX and I don't feel any need to move forward, it is heavy, it bulks up, but it delivers the best codec i've had r3d, if clients require the newest red camera, 99% of them wouldnt really be able to see the difference: The machine makes the print of the frame, the artist behind it creates the frame.
