  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just curious when the Alexa became a "high resolution" camera?

I was a bit surprised to see Arri downplay the importance of 4k in their NAB interview with John Fauer, saying they are "not in the pixel race" -- particularly when he asked if it would be upgradable to 4k down the road.

I'm sure they will continue to downplay it ... right up the point when their own 4k camera is ready ;) I guess that's just how the industry works.

While some camera companies say that 2K (and 1080P) is good enough... they are currently working on a 4K solution. And when they release it, I'll be quite curious how they figure out how to ignore what they said.

Yes, that has been Sony's song and dance for a while now ... yet they suddenly became "believers" in going beyond HD at NAB. Oh and pioneers of "True 4k"!!

Thank God for Sony. They saved us all ;)

Jim, once the parts are sourced/secured -- I hope you guys will be able to produce 20,000 Epics this year.

Well, that might not even be enough to cover demand ....

Again my Red is 78xx so how long do i have to wait for EPIC X? I am quite happy to trade in my PDW-F800 for it as well as my MX!!!

Unless you are shooting a project... and someday need a 4K output in the future. Then it bites you in the ass.

Actually, Jim -- I was going to start a separate thread about this -- what happens when 4k finally does become the "standard"?

Obviously, anything shot on 1080 or 2k is in trouble. But what about film? Will they go back to originals and rework to get as close to 4k as possible?

I'm sure it's partly an economic decision, depending on demand for 4k of older footage -- but curious to how you see film being adapted to a 4k world.

35mm film has absolutely no issues in the future 4K world. The resolution is there.

Thanks Jim, but part of my question is also -- how viable/realistic is it to go back to the original film and remaster for 4k delivery?

How much of that do you think we'll see in the 4k world?

I guess the difficulty/cost only further underscores the importance of shooting 4k digital (i.e. MX/Epic) right now.
