  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 3rd...

A box of chocolates.

A box of chocolates.

I don't know many of you, but thought I'd share this. During dinner last night a friend from a local and large lens/camera rental house here in LA we had a reflective conversation on cinema cameras and our careers during the last few years. I've been lucky and fortunate enough to work on several productions where we used "bleeding edge" cameras at the time. In fact a lot of my job was to stress test the cameras and the images off of them.

I remember the day when I heard that Red offered a Raw format. Salivating from the mouth at the potential, I couldn't wait to work with one. Luckily I didn't have to wait too long.

A day came where we were prepping on a film and I recommended that we shoot some tests with the Red One (before EPIC's time). I was told by my producer - "Well that hasn't really been proven has it?"

Shuttering at that comment I went on a light rant about what tests were all about at the head of a project and it would be ridiculous not to consider every option, especially on this film. This ended with me saying something along the lines of "well let's try to prove it". Eventually he bent and approved a test shoot up at Griffith Park. So we moved forward and geared up.

It was for everybody at the time a learning game, but everybody had one thing in common during this test shoot. They were excited. Excited that they were using a new tool, a new system, a new format. A bunch of grown men playing around, learning new things, and getting work done. When we finally wrapped and got the material back studio side I had a great deal of fun just pushing the color around. Real exciting stuff. The potential was mind boggling. Especially if you've ever shot out a color wedge when grading a film back in the day.

We eventually screened the material for the producers, director, and others on a 2K Christie in our theater. Everybody enjoyed what they were seeing. Not a single negative word. In fact, some down right said they were blown away and had "no idea that Red could look this good". While I wish I could take credit and say it was all my color work, it honestly wasn't. It was the Raw material out of the Red and what we were able to do with it that brought smiles to everybody's faces.

Years later, as I imagine many others going through damn near the same thing as many have been reluctant to change, here we find Red being used on the biggest and most anticipated features being shot all over the world. Sitting near the horizon of the their third camera launch. Creating a brand new top to bottom motion picture camera system. If you told me years ago in my lifetime a company was going to come along and do this in the time frame that Red has and change they was modern features were being shot I would have thought you to have been mad. However, nobody at Red thought that way. They had a long term vision of what was to come. Despite all criticism, delays, and those stuck in the past; just look where Red is now.

Red has empowered filmmakers with tools that they not only desire, but also nobody else makes. That is a sign of a company and a set of ethics that likes to build roads, not just drive on them.

Whatever Red, Scarlet, and November 3rd have in store for the cinematographer, I look on in anticipation. As this time around I may be able to make the switch from a Red user to a Red Owner.

I'll leave you with what 3 beers and some conversation with a friend last night led to while getting all "perspectivey":

"Red is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. But you do know it's gonna taste good."

Morpheus: You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the RED pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

...the next Matrix will be shot on RED...

You make it look easy, Jim. It never fails to amaze me just how disengaged some companies have become, or appear to be when they stand next to RED.
We'll see what unfolds on Nov 3rd, but my senses say that today's Red Projector announcement will prove to be more "important" than Canon's "biggy".
And by the time we, and the detractors, learn just how Scarlet will swing her hips on Nov 3rd, it's all over, save for the crying. And this is only the tip of the Red iceberg.

Some of the recent remarks might seem a bit "fanboy-ish" and over zealous when commenting on the "competition", but if you have followed the recent progress
of camera technology then you should understand just how ludicrously skewed things are. The more ludicrous the claims, the more traction they seem to have.
Between bogus "shoot outs" and "camera tests" and "how to" video "experts" who claim to show how to easily bridge the differences between a Canon DSLR and a Red camera,
and how 1080 equals 4K, etc., then forgive us for being so forceful when it comes to our attempts at redressing the balance.
As far as the future health of the industry is concerned, this is not the time to be modest. Send them back to their drawing boards, Jim. Subjugate the lot of them. ( :

Scarlet and it's new sensor size

Scarlet and it's new sensor size

My guess is that Scarlet will have a sensor the size of a 7d or T2i/550/60D.

It will need that to compete. Red knows this.

We don't live in a small sensor world anymore, Too many videos/films/TV shows and marketing driven videos have been shot with 35mm DOF and now everyone knows that look...even the untrained eye.

How many shoots have you done in the past year with your HVX? How many with a DSLR? How many of those DSLR shoots should have been with your HVX but the look would have suffered and the client would be unhappy.

From a company that touts itself as forward thinking a prosumer 4/3 rds chips is just too old school....nothing against small chips and formats....I actually like them but my clients don't.... my clients being film studios, TV Networks and Major Recording Labels.

So my guess is 35mm sensor and nor frills on the image...no HDR...no ANA...PL mount I hope

Game on. I wonder what Canon's got, to answer Red's awesome news.

theres something wonderful tounge-in-cheek when you look at this abstracted; the only real video camera success Canon had lately was ironically with their DSLRs which were (completely accidentally) quite a big step for aesthetics in video production, and though they resisted for so long, they were encouraged by many... then when they finally gain the confidence to make a deliberate move to announce a cinema camera, RED comes to completely eclipse them, on that very day!
i find something hilariously sad and profound about that.

I'm hoping for Ana mode (praise be to the Great Lomo God!)... 4K ana and S35 would be fine in my book... PL mount too. HDR, yes, kill it, if that means we get Ana. LOL

Otherwise Scarlet will become a B-cam (a lovely one, at that!) and I'll have to keep pushing my Masters towards Epic...

But the dream of having 2 Scarlets (with the dreamy spec of 4K and Ana modes) for A/B shooting would be soooooo nice.

OK - back to the real world now...

Even if it's a small sensor/fixed zoom... I think we're all buying one anyway!

Sort of a home run for Red this time.
