  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 3rd...

I can't believe the day has come pretty much that we will have actual motion picture camera's, soo excited!!!!!!!

This is the light at the end of a long-traveled tunnel. I've been watching and planning since the beginning, carefully putting pieces in place to create a future that involves Red. From the first time I was on set with an R1, being amazed at the images while posting some build 19 footage... I am so excited to become a part of this family, and to contribute back as much as I've been given by everyone here. Red does things in a way that are in alignment with my own approach to business (and life!), and they've earned a loyal customer and evangelist. Bring on Nov. 3rd!!

Really nice post Phil

Thanks Dan. I'll tell you it's been a long haul. But for a guy like me, it's also been a whole hell of a lot of fun.

Here's the rumor on the new big "C" announcement...

“They will be badged as EOS, despite the fact they are video cameras, and there will be two versions – one for EF lenses, the other with an PL mount. I’m guessing here but the PL mount camera may offer more options than the EF version – e.g. SDI out and genlock… etc in the same way that the XF300/305 cameras have differentiated themselves.

“Its a Super35 4K sensor, but from what I have seen only records 1080 in-camera, using the same XF codec – i.e. 4:2:2 @ 50mbps. Perhaps the PL version will output 4K thru SDI?

“The size of the camera looks similar to that of the FS100, but more rounded/ergonomic. It has a similar LCD screen on top, but it seems more flexible – i.e. allowing for greater viewing angle/for versatility."

Interestng, however if they can't find a way to record 4K onboard/inexpensively then it's just a Canon branded F3.

This is wonderful news, having followed RED for a number of years ( ie: been a lurker here, but no more!).
I am very excited for SCARLET and hopefully my budget (and wife) will allow me to purchase one (or 2) of these cameras after Nov. 3rd.

Keep up the Innovations!

Manuel Garcia

PS: Where do I watch the news Nov. 3rd?

Hilarious. We're all getting excited about announcements for.... announcements! Woot! Wait, what?

not quite they said it will be available to ship 1hr after the announcement of what the camera and package will be, that old gem needs to be retired.

Considering the recent hacking events:

Just curious about a possible new protocol , or if this unfortunate situation is likely to impact the Nov 3rd announcements, Jarred?

If the annoucement turns out to be a photocopier then it will be the biggest joke of the century for cinematographers all around the world. But since RED has also announced that details of SCARLET will be announced on the same day , then we can assume that RED
has an insider information on whats happening from canon on that auspicious day of November...and it will be a new DSLR ...

I have an interesting sense of humor. If I was canon, I would leak a product with a super image of 32mp 3d etc, and on the day release a photocopier with a 32 mp ultra sensitive high dynamic range sensor suitable for archival accuracy, and fancy 3d scanning capabilities to make it legit to the hype. Then after all the competition breaths a big sigh of relief and stops sweating, a weekend two latter release a quality camera using the same sensor just to mess with them ;) . That is what we could see in true competition, Instead we got, can we agree on a format and, seemingly, generouse limitations of that format, from the industry for tears and years. We have major players panning out sensors to other players to use in their competing products. Any industry shouldn't be walking so close unless there is nothing left to develope. Canon, though, has been a standout in a number of ways in bringing leading products, but if they want to compete with Red, they need to do a lot more than what we have been hearing about this camera.

My guess is that the new Canon camera will not be as good as the Scarlet. All it will mean is that Canon is not AS far behind as they use to be, but still behind.

I hear that the dsp is due for an upgrade. They could easily do better 1080p or 4k on their dslr.

I have like a half dozen Lumix products. Love them for what they do. The GH2 with the Voigtlander 25mm / F.95 is simply amazing in low light and stealth street shooting. Shot some night video scenes at the recent Burning Man event that could not be done with any other camera at any cost. Keep the innovation and shipping coming Red - the race has just begun.

We have heard a whisper of what Nikon might be doing in the still camera/HDSLR world as well.

Now all of the announced cameras will likely play in different price point than Scarlet, but it is worth noting that we are still seeing filtered down technology and incremental upgrades.

As many suspected and what Jim hinted at, it would appear that the majority of manufacturers are focused on "Full HD 1080p 60fps".

The sad truth though is that 1080p at 60fps was achieved in 2010 in the consumer marketplace in a compact camcorder.

Now honestly, from a technology stand point and damn near two years later, how can manufacturers make us think that that's the best they can do?
