  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 3rd...

S35 4k seems to be the standard going forward. If the Scarlet brings 24fps RAW 4k with interchangeable lenses (and optional canon mount) all for around 10k i will poop myself. Twice

You've got balls for sure. Swing for the fences. But the track record on Scarlet delivery has been inconsistent. Why will this November be any different? I'm sure the camera specs will be exceptionally good, better then Canon for many but at the end of the day if there's a choice it might between dependable availability on time. I mean no disrespect by this, truly. Why is this time different?

They will (excepting circumstances) ship because they have been ready to ship for a long time pending some parts, and they said they will ship. This is not the same as times past, it is not a projection or forecast as to when they may or are likely to, ship. Have some faith in them, they are ready to do what they have prepared to do, more than the rest of us.

Ha ha!!

Just hopefully they don't get hit too hard... We still need their "L" series glass... ;)

Agreed...love those Canon L series lenses for my Epic and on my Canon 5D MK II ;)

But for Scarlet Fixed Red will already be supplying a great lens. To add to that, it would be great if Red would make a bayonet (or screw-on) 2x by extender, and a full zoom through bayonet (or screw-on) Wide Converter - which would both naturally be closely matched with the fixed zoom on the camera. With those, the maximum utility potential of the camera for mobile production would then be stunning.

Fun times ahead :w00t:

I cannot express how ready I am for this day. Every morning when I wake up I think about you scarlet. The confidence in RED at this point is very admirable, CAN'T WAIT!

This is great news for Red customers.
I'm just thinking out loud here.

The Canon 4K prototype had the following specs
8MP 2/3-inch CMOS sensor able to shoot 4k (4096×2160 resolution) video @ 60 frames per second
fixed 20x f/1.8-f/3.8 optical zoom – 35mm equivalent of a 24-480mm lens

If so and depending on price and final specs it will probably be in direct competition with the
Scarlet whose specs were (before Jim's announcement) 3K resolution with 5MP stills and 2/3" sensor

My feeling is Canon think they know the Scarlet pricing and specs and feel they have the edge here, I wouldn't be so sure.

If Red manages to up the Scarlet specs to 4K with 12-14MP stills then it's game over for the Canon.
How would that affect the Epic-S ? I don't know, but it would definitely be a hands down winner (on specs) over the Canon.

If Canon is producing a 4K Digital Cinema camera the big question is will they opt for 2/3 sensor
or go the whole hog and use a 35mm ?

If Canon offers a 4K 35mm Digital Cinema Camera with Raw capabilities and interchangeable mounts
for around 15K then this would not really affect their lower end 7D DSLR etc sales, where as a 2/3"
(lower priced) option may.

Any 4K 35mm camera would probably have a 12-14MP Stills Capability which would put it in the proposed Epic-S price range.
Even though the Epic-S would outspec it it in most departments it would still be a competitor.

My feeling is Jim is making an announcement on Nov 3rd because he sees the Canon camera as
possibly affecting Scarlet sales. If this is the case then bumping up the Scarlet specs makes sense and is a clever
move.

Again this is all just speculation and everything depends on final specs and pricing.

Are you sure that's not a hair dryer? :001_tongue:

Seems like S35 is covered by Epic-S and also it seems like there are situations that are actually better served by a 2/3" sensor (sports, nature, 3D, industrial, etc.), not to mention a lot of development seems to have been put into 2/3" lens development - fixed and mini-prime.

So to me a bump to 4K on a 2/3" sensor makes the most sense. (Also, generally a smaller die equals lower price.) These days jamming 8 megapixels on a 2/3" chip should be pretty easy. Some loss in sensitivity with smaller pixels but newer technology probably gets us within a stop or less of R1 sensitivity.

I know you will say then go buy another camera if it all is going to look the same and I could but my argument is this, the market that has been waiting for scarlet is not in 10-15k price range so to have ppl get funds aside for a camera that was suppose to be somewhere in 6k price range and boost it up for stuff we might not need seems silly to me and belive me ppl will be very sad if the price get a bit out of there reach especially in this economy.

Yes... I'm in defiantly in this boat. I could swing $8k at the most... after that I'm out. I'll still be rooting for Red to push the industry forward and such, but sadly I won't be able to be a part of it.

Cameras like "that one everyone's raving about" with 4:2:0 35mb/s that maxes out at 30fps for $13,000 are a straight up joke. Then on top of that, it's more money for stupid quasi-(not-even-close) to RAW s-log for $3,500 more!? What!? People need to wake up. Scarlet will be a much needed slap to the face, even if I personally can't jump on...

I just read that on Nov 3rd Canon are planning to roll out the RED carpet. heh heh heh

I hope they don't mind being walked all over.

Epic-S is not on the roadmap anymore. Also, when asked about the Epic-S, Jim recently replied, "The camera you want is later this year." I imagine that those who were interested in Epic-S want S35. As far as I can tell, the only unreleased camera slated to ship this year is Scarlet, which is to ship before year's end (according to Jarred).

M-X is two-year-old technology. A bump in the sensor size to S16 plus gains in sensitivity due to improvements in sensor technology could, I presume, yield a smallish 4K sensor whose sensitivity and dynamic range exceed those of the M-X Scarlet. But I still think that Scarlet is now S35.

I'm curious the devices announced on Nov 3rd will be competing with each other.
I mean, if Scarlet is still 2/3" which I hope it is, then Canon will also have to be 2/3".
If canon is S35 or FF35 then, they are not really competition for each other.

Competing in terms of 4K maybe, but sensor size is the key. a 4K XLH1 is still just an XLH1, whereas a 4K s35 camera competes with RED ONE and Epic.

Man, I hope I can get an Epic-X before Oct 20th.

Reflective on a Wednesday. Why I'll only buy RED:

DVX, and HVX owner in the past, was very happy, produced lots of great content with both. But the lapse in foresight from all companies, from Panasonic to Sony to Canon to JVC, was incredibly frustrating. Stunted advancements in imaging technology are pricey for early careerists. Cycling into a new camera format every few years with minimal upgrades was not good for business or creativity. 24p SD blew my mind years ago, as did 1080i to P2 on my HVX in 2006. But I can't help but feel like a veil of ignorance was held over my face. Little did we know in early 2006 what was possible if a group of talented visionaries demanded more. Whether the aforementioned companies perpetuated the problem out of ignorance, or to make more money on a slow burn, they didn't push hard enough. Now they are scrambling.

RED is the embodiment of "anything is possible" and I will be buying as many Scarlets as the Nov 3 announcement allows. I'm 25 and at the early onset of what I hope to be a long career, and I see no day where I choose anything but RED. It's more than a company.

I could not put it in words any better myself!

Well done, Jim and Jarred.

Um, not to be a downer, but why all the crazy congratulations? What Jim and Jarred have done is announce an announcement. They have been promising a Scarlet delivery in 2011 for some time, so nothing new has been announced...other than the belief that Scarlet, or whatever it ends up being will eat Canon's short. Although I already own an Epic-M, I'm as psyched to learn about the new offering from Red as the next guy. But sometimes these responses seems a bit much given nothing of substance has been announced yet.

Personally, I have complete and total faith that by force of will, Jim will ensure that Red remains in the drivers seat, pushing the bleeding edge of digital cinema. I already know that short of a joint venture between Red and Canon (extreeeeeemly unlikely), Canon will never be able to keep pace and still maintain the volume levels a corporation of that size requires of its business units. In other words, CANON would have to be insane to try to compete head to head with a purpose designed, streamlined, focuses company led by a highly competitive and successful team like Red. Whatever Canon announces, its not likely to be as planet shaking as they say. But it probably will be cool. Whatever Red announces is likely to include head-turning technology at an amazing price-point.

Maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed or something. I'm going to go out and shoot with my Epic...that will cheer me up!

I am totally rooting for Canon. RED needs some competition. I am not sure about the chances of a Scarlet competitor being announced on Nov 3rd however.

Silly Subhadip....There is no competition...

Several people mentioned after seeing Epic M in Houston that they could use that camera for the rest of their professional careers and still have a creative and technological advantage over anything on the market.

I'm confident Scarlet will be equally impressive...Congrats to the Red Team

I still think ppl are going to buy this camera and just distribute on the web, which the way web compresses stuff it won't matter how much or how little u pay or how much or specs because it all ends up h.264 and 4k or 3k until they become the standard will more than likely be down-res to 1080p, and I have seen the 5D and fs100 af100 almost look close to Epic online with a much easier workflow.

The 5D does not have an easier workflow. It's simpler but it's a lot harder because you have to be SO much more careful with a 100 menu color settings. Once you start manipulating the image in camera I find myself slowing way down to be sure I'm perfectly nailing exposure, contrast etc. RAW gives you some breathing room like film.

Also regardless if it ends up 640x480 on YouTube I've worked on a ton of High-end youtube videos and most of them were shot on greenscreen. Pulling a key from h264 vs 4k is a huge difference and will save a ton of time/money and improve quality by going the 4k route. Lastly I've had notes from CEOs passed down that asked if we could make the image less soft. These are executives are not film people and they thought their commercials were too soft when shot on the 5D, they didn't even have anything to compare it against. "Sorry, production company shot on what's practically an SD camera, nothing we can do now."

I can see it now:

November 3rd. 6pm:

Canon - "Here is our new DSLR/Regular camera. It's basically a 5D that can record raw video in 1080p. It also shoots slo-motion at an incredible 60fps (but only at 720p)!!!! It has built in HDR that looks like crap. Oh and it's shaped like camcorder and not a dslr now. It's only $8,000." But wait there's more. For you loyal Canon customers it's still $8,000. But you can still use all your canon lenses."

November 3rd. 6:05pm:

RED - "SCARLET is here, it's better than we said it would be. In fact, it's pretty much just an EPIC that costs less. HDRX, 120fps in 3K. Fixed 2/3 package (includes side handle, batteries, lcd, and SSD drive) is $10,000. Oh, and we'll be upgrading the sensor soon. And a year from now that camera you bought will be even better than it is now."

Novermber 3rd. 6:06pm:

Canon - "fuck beans"
