Here's a recap of some of the news I heard during RED Day. I'll be updating this as more comes to me....
Some other important/interesting things we learned:
I'd never seen 4K before, but today definitely made me a believer. They had it projected on a 40' screen using a Sony 4K projector(Jim tipped his hat to them), and I gotta say, it blew me away. The difference between 1080p and 4K is real folks. Once 4K starts hitting theaters, its gonna be awesome!
I was also able to pick up the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed before they started asking people to not touch it, and I've got to say, if that's close to the final weight, expect it to be pretty light. The 8x lens is big though. Much bigger than I expected. They did have several of the RED Mini Primes on display too, as well as the RPPs. They also had a few EPIC bodies around as well, as well as the RED Gunner and the shoulder mount I've seen in quite a few renders.
- .RM- RED M.D. This is a new metadata format that allows you to set a look in REDCINE-X, and export it. You can then load it into your RED ONE via SD card, and shoot footage with that look viewable in an external monitor (I assume it would also show in the eyepiece, but I can't verify). Very cool.
- REDCine-X is up to Build 13[56] - I can't remember if it was 135 or 136, but they have it up and running. The build they were using had the .rmd feature
- Expect Scarlet to come out towards the end of Summer
- Ordering for Scarlet will start once they're happy with it, and they've started to ramp up production
- They're still working on Monstro, and they've even starting writing things down about their new sensor
Some other important/interesting things we learned:
- Use full debayer
- 4K REALLY does make a difference
- RedColor and RedGamma makes a huge difference for post and DI work
- Boris and Natasha had a 30ms read/reset time when Peter Jackson made Crossing the Line. Read/reset time is now 8.7-8.9 on Mysterium. Mysterium-X has a 5ms read/reset time. Film is 4ms.
- Sony FF35 is about 1.7K. If 1.7K = 1080p, then 3.5K =4K. (1700/1920 = 88.5%, 3500/4096 is 85.5%)
- The ASICs in the new Epics have 29(?) layers. They have twice as many layers as the next most complicated ASICs ever made.
- RED is dedicated to 3D.
- 35mm does NOT abide by Moore's law. RED does.
